Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it's only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they've spotted one such mod already.
In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there's a user tile displayed. If you'd like to do the same on ...

We've been looking at some pretty cool Kinect and Windows interactions for a while now, but we were hoping that the release of an official SDK would lead to even more coolness. Evoluce has stepped up, and is now offering Win&I -- a full-featured gesture control system for Windows 7.
The company claims that a range of up to four meters is supported, which should be perfect for just ...

Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers -- Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista... what's with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early ...

Nir Sofer (of NirSoft) makes loads of useful little Windows utilities. One of our favorites, Volumouse, has a new beta available and it offers some nice improvements over its predecessor.
To start, Volumouse beta 2 adds support for Windows Vista and Windows 7 per-application volume settings. There's also a new "send hotkeys" feature which lets you use the mouse wheel to fire off custom ...

Pinning programs, folders, and even frequently used documents to your Windows 7 taskbar can be a real time-saver. Certain folders, however, aren't so easy to add -- especially if you want them right on the taskbar and not buried in the Explorer jump list.
Windows 7 Taskbar Items Pinner makes pinning everything from your downloads folder to the control panel to network connections as easy ...

Windows 7 SP1 download links are now live for MSDN and TechNet subscribers, so head to your downloads page and grab the updated ISOs. Public availability will follow on February 22nd, and end users will be able to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 via Windows Update or download an installer.
As we've said before, SP1 won't bring many (if any) visible changes to the average user. In addition to ...

One of the ways Internet Explorer 9 seeks to "bring the Web to your desktop" is by allowing sites to be pinned to your taskbar, and use jump lists to quickly and directly access specific parts of a website. A handful of big-name sites already offer Windows 7 integration, including Facebook, Twitter, CNN, Flixster, and IMDb.
Microsoft has also shared how this works (and Scott Hanselman has ...

Mozilla's Robert Strong has published a blog post which calls out a subtle yet significant change in recent Firefox 4 beta builds. Firefox will now automatically pin itself to the Windows 7 taskbar if you set it as your default browser during installation.
Strong finds it odd that Windows 7 doesn't do this automatically. After all, Microsoft does pin Internet Explorer to the taskbar -- except, ...

The Windows Team blog has finally given us a concrete release date for Windows 7 SP1. On February 22, the service pack will be available to the general public for download via Windows Update or directly from the Microsoft website. The client (Windows 7) update is being released in tandem with its server counterpart, so administrators will be able to grab Server 2008 R2 SP1 on the 22nd as well. ...

You may have tried to pin a document or file you work on frequently to your Windows 7 taskbar, only to learn that it's too smart for that. Instead, you wind up with a pinned item for the program associated with the file's type, with your file pinned to the jump list. After reading a writeup at Lifehacker earlier today, I couldn't help thinking there was an easier solution than what they proposed ...

Windows 7 makes a number of networking tasks a whole lot easier to tackle -- one of which is sharing the music, movies, and photos stored on your computer with today's network-ready TVs. If your fancy new flatscreen can connect to your wired or wireless network, it can probably also play your Windows 7 media.
To set things up, hit the Windows key and type streaming in the search box. Wait for ...

This week we're running a series of posts that tackle common Windows networking issues, and some tips and tricks that might speed up or improve your network stability. You can find more tech tips in our Tips index.
One small Windows XP feature I used to lean on frequently was "Connect To" -- it provided easy access to a computer's network connections right from the Start Menu. I also like ...

We reported earlier that the release of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 could be coming soon. Its impending arrival seemed to be heralded by the availability of a prerequisite installer update delivered recently via Windows Update. Now, however, there's an indication that we could be just hours away from being able to download Windows 7 SP1.
A Microsoft Technet blog -- albeit a Russian one we've had ...

We love a good app with Windows 7 shell integration features -- like GVNotifier. It's a slick little Google Voice notification and messaging app with jump list and progress indicator support. Install the app, log in to your account, and you've got slide-up access to contacts, call history, and voice mail messages. GVNotifier even lets you send SMS messages to your Google Voice contacts right from ...
