Unity -- the popular 3D game development tool -- has announced that its Unity Android and Unity Android Pro tools are now available for download. So what's the big deal? The tool allows developers who have used Unity to create games for other platforms -- including iOS -- to port them to Android with "one click."
Loads of popular games have been created using Unity, and some have already ...

Ubuntu's new Unity interface already drew some raised eyebrows because of its looks, which are arguably similar to the Windows 7 taskbar. Now, the Ask Ubuntu site has posted a list of Unity keyboard shortcuts -- and those take a cue from Windows 7 as well.
The super key, which typically refers to the Windows key on most standard keyboards, invokes the Unity Launcher -- on Windows, this ...

Qt, come the end of 2011, is to become a standard component of Ubuntu 11.10. Ubuntu currently, and in the upcoming 11.04 Natty Narwhal distribution, uses Gtk+, a competing toolkit maintained by the GNOME Foundation.
When Canonical announced Ubuntu's shift away from the GNOME desktop manager in 11.04, the switch to Qt was almost a foregone conclusion; GNOME requires Gtk+, but Unity doesn't -- ...

New, clean-and-simple HTML5 websites are obviously in this week: GNOME, one of the most popular desktop environments for Linux, has just released a new website to celebrate the features of version 3, which will be released in April.
With phrases like "SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL" and "DISTRACTION-FREE COMPUTING" plastered all over the site it's obvious that GNOME not only likes capital letters, but that ...

After only hinting at its existence this morning, it is now possible to install Unity 2D on both the latest stable version of Ubuntu (10.10 Maverick Meerkat), and the upcoming 11.04 (Natty Narwhal).
Unity 2D takes the form of a normal Personal Package Archive (PPA) that goes by the name 'Unity-Qt'. You can get it by simply adding the the Unity 2D repository, updating apt-get, and then ...

It's amazing it took this long for Canonical to confirm, but it seems that Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal will ship with both a fancy, OpenGL-accelerated version of Unity, and a flatter, slightly more sedate 2D version for older, unaccelerated hardware. A couple more images of the 2D UI are available after the break.
Given the fact that one of the most common targets for Linux installations is on ...

One of the biggest changes in the upcoming release of Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal is a change away from much-loved GNOME Shell to Canonical's Unity. Such a big change has garnered a lot of commentary on both sides of the fence, but the truth is, you'll be able to switch back to Shell if you don't like Unity!
Still, if you're interested in hearing the reasoning behind the change to Unity, you ...

The first alpha release of Ubuntu 11, dubbed Natty Narwhal, has just been released. It is classed as a "developer snapshot," and is provided more as a sneak preview of what's to come in Ubuntu 11. Regular users of Ubuntu 10 should not upgrade.
Along with the usual package updates and an updated kernel (2.6.37), Ubuntu 11 will also ship with Firefox 4. The alpha build includes Firefox 4 beta 7, ...

Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth has announced that the Unity shell currently used in Ubuntu's netbook edition will become the default user interface for Ubuntu's main desktop edition as well, starting with the next version of the operating system. Unity became Ubuntu's netbook UI with the release of the current version of the OS, 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.

Ubuntu 10.10 was recently released, and one of the many feature additions Canonical is excited about is the introduction of the uTouch gesture framework, which brings multi-touch support to the popular Linux distro.
Using uTouch, users can perform a range of actions ranging from displaying the task switcher you see above to minimizing, maximizing, and restoring windows. Curious about how ...

In a rather momentous and magnanimous reversal, Apple has rescinded its draconian iOS development tool restriction. Developers are now free to use any development environment, framework (Unity) or cross-compiler (Flash-to-iPhone).
We probably won't ever know the real reason for Apple's change of heart, but it's likely a gambit to ensure the iPhone and iPad remain top-dogs, at least as far as ...

I know, I know, Zelda games are sacred. It's like trying to cover a Michael Jackson song -- you can give it your best shot, but you can't improve on something perfect, so why bother? Well, you do it for fun of course! Zelda II FPS is a delightful, painstakingly recreated version of the 1987 side-scrolling classic. No expense has been spared -- all of the original textures are there, and the ...

If you love your Mac but still need or want to run Windows, Linux, or Solaris, then VMware's Fusion is worth a look. Though it's still in beta and not expected to launch until later this summer, this virtualization tool gives you access to all the apps in a second operating system without requiring a reboot to access them. We downloaded it to a MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo and then installed Windows ...
