It's the end of April. Spring is here, and so is Ubuntu 10.04. Or at least, that's the plan. Canonical's rigid release schedule is awesome for many reasons -- one of which is the amount of excitement it generates around each new Ubuntu release. However, I don't think this is the kind of ...

Well, I can now cross yet another application off my list of apps I'd miss if I switched to Linux. TeamViewer, my remote support application of choice, has arrived -- bringing its zero-config screen sharing goodness to Linux.
Some of the more recent additions -- like per-application screen sharing via TeamViewer's toolbar button -- haven't made it into the Linux version yet, but things ...

According to Mark Shuttleworth, Ubuntu 10.10 will be called Maverick Meerkat. I think it's a pretty neat name; I like meerkats.
Other than a neat name, 10.10 will continue pushing for faster boot times and faster overall speed. Also, the new "light" theme will be even more pronounced. That's what Shuttleworth says, at least. Ubuntu isn't known for refreshing the UI very often, but maybe ...

LinuxUser reports that the Ubuntu music store is now apparently open for business. Above you can see the screenshot for the Prodigy's Invaders Must Die (awesome album, by the way). It integrates well with powerful iPod sync functionality introduced in 10.04, so you can now easily buy an MP3 off the store and drag-and-drop it onto your iPod, all from within Ubuntu's Rythmbox music management ...

With the final release of Ubuntu 10.04 due in just under a month, things appear to be right on schedule at Canonical. Yesterday the Lucid beta download page went live and eager testers rapidly descended upon the mirrors.
Watching Lucid evolve has been exciting. It's clear that Canonical is intent on creating a version of Ubuntu which can appeal to a broader base of computer users with a more ...

As some of you may have noticed, the new Ubuntu theme for 10.4 features the window buttons on the "wrong side" (left). This has caused quite the storm in a teacup. It turns out some people feel strongly about this point, even though you apparently would be able to change it later (on a per-user basis, as a preference). This presents Mark Shuttleworth (head of Ubuntu) with an interesting ...

Among the other improvements, tweaks, and retoolings headed to Ubuntu 10.04, the Ubiquity installer slideshow appears set for an update.
Ubuntu contributor Dylan McCall has posted preview images of the new screens which could be coming soon to the OS's Ubiquity installer. Interestingly enough they're cast in the soft browns of Lucid's first alpha releases -- and not the Mac-esque color schemes ...

Ubuntu has been the "Flagship Linux" distro for quite a while now. This is the distro most people judge Linux by (and the only one I personally work with). However, its visual style remained constant for a long time, and has been starting to look a bit stale. It's difficult to convey "innovation" to end users when your product keeps the same look, version to version.
There's been a lot of ...

For there to be any chance of "the year of Linux on the desktop" ever becoming a reality, certain things have to happen. One of those things (like it or not) is for a major distribution to support the most popular portable media players on the planet -- the iPhone and iPod Touch.
And it looks as though Canonical has stepped up to the plate. According to reports at Ubuntuforums, Lucid Lynx ...

As Canonical continues work on Ubuntu 10.04, it's becoming more and more apparent that they're serious about delivering an OS with some serious consumer appeal. Ubuntu One -- Canonical's cloud sync service -- and the U1 Music Store will no doubt contribute to that appeal.
After showing us a handful of early screenshots of the Music Store, self-professed Ubuntu fanboy Popey has been digging ...

Over at Popey.com there are a whole slew of new screenshots of the upcoming Ubuntu One Music Store, which will eventually appear in Ubuntu10.04 Lucid Lynx.
It was widely reported that Amazon would provide the backend for the Music Store, but it now looks as though 7Digital will be handling things instead. I'm not surprised, as 7Digital is actually available in more countries. Amazon has, for ...

Gloobus-Preview is a truly awesome extension for the GNOME Desktop environment for Linux. It gives you a full screen preview of most file types. Based on Apple's Quicklook you can, for example, display the currently played mp3 including a cover window and lyrics on your desktop while playing music with your favorite player like Amarok or Songbird.
In other words, you can access a huge number ...

How to convince a Mac OS X or Windows user to try GNU/Linux? Installing the desired distribution in a Virtual Machine? Read them all those FAQs about partitioning your hard drive for a dual-boot system? No, no - there's an easier way: live CDs or DVDs! Almost every distribution (like Ubuntu, Knoppix or Fedora) are capable of booting into a fully functional desktop right from a burned disc. Simply ...

If you're looking for an easy way to port some of your favorite Apple fonts over to Ubuntu, here it is! I've just started to get exposed to alternative OSes like Ubuntu and was really excited to find a way to easily get some of my favorite fonts over to it quickly and easily. TechSource has provided a really great tutorial on how to access those fonts without a lot of fuss.
To get started, open ...

The watchful eyes at Phoronix noticed that a pair of small changes were announced yesterday on the Ubuntu dev list. Both will affect the browser in Lucid Lynx -- and both have to do with search.
The more subtle of the two is a small tweak within Firefox. When a user changes his or her default search, the Ubuntu start page's search box will send queries to that provider. While most users may ...
