The first alpha release of Ubuntu 11, dubbed Natty Narwhal, has just been released. It is classed as a "developer snapshot," and is provided more as a sneak preview of what's to come in Ubuntu 11. Regular users of Ubuntu 10 should not upgrade.
Along with the usual package updates and an updated kernel (2.6.37), Ubuntu 11 will also ship with Firefox 4. The alpha build includes Firefox 4 beta 7, ...

aDeskbar is a slick menu and dock app for Linux systems which offers a wide range of customization options. In addition to the familiar menu-based app launcher, aDeskbar also includes nice features like drawers (similar to OS X stacks) and widgets for quick actions like invoking a terminal, logging off, or shutting down your system. Visual options abound, too -- opacity, position, hover effects, ...

One knock against Canonical's Ubuntu One sync service is the fact that clients for other operating systems aren't available. That gives Dropbox a pretty big edge at the moment -- though Canonical has taken one huge step toward leveling the playing field with the release of a beta Ubuntu One app for Windows.
OMG! Ubuntu has gotten beta access already and shared a handful of screenshots. ...

We're getting used to software developers releasing early and iterating often. Web browsers are perhaps the best example, with Google, Mozilla, and Opera dropping bleeding-edge snapshots like so many quarters into a one-armed bandit. Operating systems, however, are another story.
Canonical is looking to change that, and frontman Mark Shuttleworth thinks that you may see Ubuntu pushing things ...

Ubuntu certainly gets the lion's share of attention when it comes to Linux distributions, but Linux Mint has been offering a sleek, simplified Ubuntu/Debian experience for years. With the release of Linux Mint 10, a boatload of new features and a shiny new default theme make it well worth checking out if you've been searching for a new distro to try.
Like Ubuntu 10.10, Mint now makes it easy ...

Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth has announced that the Unity shell currently used in Ubuntu's netbook edition will become the default user interface for Ubuntu's main desktop edition as well, starting with the next version of the operating system. Unity became Ubuntu's netbook UI with the release of the current version of the OS, 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.
Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal is set to ...

Ubuntu 10.10 was recently released, and one of the many feature additions Canonical is excited about is the introduction of the uTouch gesture framework, which brings multi-touch support to the popular Linux distro.
Using uTouch, users can perform a range of actions ranging from displaying the task switcher you see above to minimizing, maximizing, and restoring windows. Curious about how ...

A few days ago, Canonical outed the beta version of its Ubuntu One Music app for Android. It's nascent, to say the least -- lacking things we've come to expect from music players like album artwork and playlists. Now Ubuntu One Music has arrived in App Store -- and the iOS experience looks every bit as Spartan.
And by that, I mean I'd like to kick it down a hole. But seriously -- the interface ...

Canonical's Ubuntu One sync platform has developed nicely since its initial release, and while I'm waiting for the arrival of a Windows client to get really excited about it, the new Ubuntu One Music App for Android is a nice addition.
Now in beta testing, the Music App allows you to (brace yourself!) stream music which you've previously stashed in your Ubuntu One storage. Right now, there are ...

The team at Ubuntu decided to make today a fun Friday, releasing Ubuntu 10.10 RC (Maverick Meerkat) for users to play with over the weekend. The full stable release is due to release on October 10th, so if you don't feel like running the outlandish risk of using a beta version, sarcasm intended, then you don't have long to wait for the real deal.
Changes and additions in this version are plenty, ...

A while back, I installed Linux Mint on an old laptop I had lying around. While the system feels quite slick, it does suffer from some typical Linux woes, one of which is a complete inability to recover from Suspend or Hibernate. In other words, I can only cold boot the system; there's no way to suspend it.
After googling around, I came to the conclusion that this is a fairly tough problem to ...

On paper, Ubuntu Netbook Edition looks great. I mean, what's not to like? It's got a sexy launcher, a lean and mean footprint, fast boot times, ... and it's free!
So, I decided to take the plunge. I didn't use a virtual machine to just "review it," though. I actually took an old Acer Aspire 1650 laptop -- which was running XP -- and switched it to Ubuntu Netbook Edition.
Installation was a ...

Technology provides today's school with numerous avenues to provide quality education to kids while making learning fun. With schools increasing the use of technology to deliver learning, parents are faced with embracing technology to provide learning and fun experiences for kids growing up in a technology saturated world after school.
As a concerned parent, I want to do my part in making sure ...

Firefox has been a Ubuntu default app for ages, but there's a chance that it might not be around come version 10.10 -- at least on the Netbook Edition of Canonical's OS.
Developers are currently examining other options -- specifically Chromium and Midori. As Ubuntu HQ points out, there are currently several issues that would need to be addressed should Chromium be handed the default browsing ...

Several big sites have been blogging excitedly about Peppermint OS. ReadWriteWeb's Sarah Perez referred to Peppermint as "A new Linux OS for the cloud," but is it really? I decided to download and install Peppermint so that I could find out for myself.
What I found is that Peppermint is very similar to dozens of other Linux distributions out there: it's a remix of Ubuntu with a different set ...
