You mean Microsoft isn't
going to quit making iLife-style apps just because Macs can boot into Windows? Well, I doubt Windows Movie Maker is
going anywhere. And Max, Vista's photo application, is set to be a major
selling point to the consumers out there. So I can only think Monaco, or Vista's answer to GarageBand, will
also be at least a bullet point on the back of the box (which box remains a ...

With all the excitement of Boot Camp, and the ability to now run Windows on a Mac, what about the rest of us? Those of
us that use Windows out of necessity, and lust after a Mac yet can't afford or justify the purchase of one. What to do?
Well, you can make your Windows XP PC look as much like a Mac as possible.
To do so, you can follow the
instructions at Tech
Manifesto. Or, if you're like me, ...

So, you're strolling
through CompUSA or your favorite box store electronics retailer, and you walk down the aisle full of webcams, yearning
to use an Internet video-conferencing tool like Sightspeed or iChat to talk with some buddies or family on the other
side of the planet. You carefully examine the packaging of each of the web cameras and realize, "hey--none
of these support Mac OS ...

Apparently
everyone and his cousin must be trying to get at this right now (ah yes, there it is on digg), but some company called Parallels is beta testing some virtualization software for the Intel Macs that'll
run Winders right inside OS X. No word as to how well it works yet, but apparently we are just a few days/weeks/months
(tops) from a real alternative to that lame dual-boot solution. Play ...

Since getting out of the database business a few years ago,
I haven't had to sully myself with things like foreign keys or even SQL for a while. But now that it looks like I'll be
building a site using MySQL and PHP, it's back to the db again. Luckily, developer Thomas Mango sent in a tip about his
PGnJ app. It's written in Java, and serves as a database manager for
PostgreSQL and MySQL databases. ...

I come back from a walk in
the park with my son, and what do I find? Apple has released Boot
Camp, a tool for installing Windows XP on Macs. Sure, someone else beat them to the
punch, but this is highly unusual for two reasons. One, Apple almost never releases a public beta (at least, not
for free, as in OS X). Two, this is pretty much saying, "we know you still need Windows for stuff." ...

While everyone knows that DOS programs can be run
in any version of Windows in the command prompt, if you've ever tried to play a classic DOS game on your modern system
you may have been disappointed.
If you're really intent on getting that classic version of Out of this World
(Another World for our European friends) from 1991 working on your Windows XP box (or Mac OS X, Linux or even ...

For a platform that touts
graphics as its strong point, OS X does indeed seem to have some flaws in handling images... Never mind all the visual
gunk I sometimes get when opening my iBook (lines that are stuck to the desktop), or the way tool tips just hang around
after Exposé is dismissed— my Windows machines get those too. I'm talking about pictures that will crash
Macs. It's a ...

Today's mod is our first truly
cross-platform feature in this category - a site full of mods for OS X, Windows and Linux. InterfaceLIFT contains a raft of customizations for your PC, from wallpaper to
icons, Mac OS X themes, and Windows visual styles. Pretty much everything is covered, and done with a good dollop of
style. The sheer number of possible downloads are mind boggling, and the ...

How many times have you wanted to save a
WMA audio file into your iTunes library on your Mac, only to realize that the only tool you can use to play the file is
the Mac version of Windows Media Player? Not a happy situation. Thankfully, the good folks at TUAW pointed out a
tool that makes rapid-fire conversion of WMA files into iTunes-friendly MP3 a snap. Called EasyWMA, this piece of ...

This is another OS X only, but it's odd enough
for me to share. Sound and Lights are actually a series of applications. They
do one thing: turn on the lights (and sounds happen as a result). See where they get the title? If you go through all
the versions (they are up to 8 now) you'll see a little bit of a story, kinda. I have no idea what they're going for
with all this, but I have a habit of not ...
