While exciting progress is being made in the realm of high-speed mobile data, it will be a long time indeed before wireless operators can catch up with wired bandwidth and ubiquity. For the time being, mass data transfer will be one of the few things that will stay within the realm of home and office computing, on DSL and Cable connections.

There's a New Year's treat for Transmission users waiting in the App Store. It seems Apple has approved iControlBits -- a new app that can remotely manage your torrent downloads. Apple has historically blocked any torrent-related apps, like Drivetrain, an app very similar to iControlBits, which was submitted last May.
The app sells for $1.99 and gives you the ability to monitor and control ...

Transmission is one of the fastest, lightest Bittorrent apps on Mac and Linux, and it just reached version 2.0. Although it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the flashier torrent apps like Vuze, the new version is built for speed. Awesome under-the-hood improvements to the way Transmission handles torrents just confirm why Transmission is my Mac torrent client of choice.

As you all know, I recently got an Android phone. I also happen to 'partake in the torrent' from time to time. Not that I'm a pirate or anything, but torrents are often the best solution to a given problem! In fact, I love BitTorrent so much that I actually rent a server with 100Mbit connectivity so that I can download stuff very quickly. The problem is... sometimes I forget to stop a completed ...

Transmission, the popular open-source BitTorrent client, just got an important update that includes a few of the features topping users' most-requested list. Magnet link support is included, and so is support for trackerless torrents. Those are the big changes, but the list of other improvements and new features is longer than your arm. Check out the release notes for Transmission 1.8 for a ...

iPhone users have been told we aren't allowed to play with a nasty little application like Drivetrain, which remotely controls transmission downloads. We might be using it to control illegal download on another machine, after all, and Apple doesn't want us getting into trouble. Android users, however, are free to install Transdroid - a handy little app that interfaces with Transmission, uTorrent, ...

There's more than one way to skin a cat. Today's cat: starting torrent downloads on your computer from a remote location! The first two options require 1) your home machine's address and 2) a forwarded port on your router. If you're on a dynamic IP connection like me, a DDNS updating service like Dyndns.org makes finding your machine much easier - it gives you an easy-to-remember, permanent ...

Now that torrent technology has become one of the most popular ways to distribute large files, it's important to find the right Bittorrent client. If you're on a Mac, that's Transmission. I used to be a fan of Azureus (now called Vuze), but I switched to Transmission because it's less cluttered and takes up a lot less screen real-estate. Transmission's not bare-bones in terms of features -- you ...

Mac users who like Transmission for their bittorrent-ing may have been jealous of uTorrent users for being able to control their transfers via a web browser. However, Clutch offers a web interface for Transmission so you can leave your Mac torrents active and control them from anywhere. Clutch runs in your menubar on whatever port you choose in the settings (this port will need to be opened on ...
