Internet Explorer 9, in its first 24 hours of availability, has racked up a grand total of 2.3 million downloads. An impressive number, until you compare it to the latest major releases from Mozilla: Firefox 3.5 was downloaded 5 million times in 24 hours -- and Firefox 3, back in 2008, holds the world record for any piece of software with over 8 million downloads in one day.
Of course it isn't ...

When we first heard about iDisplay, there was something about it that piqued our curiosity. It extends your desktop onto another screen -- your Android or iOS device, to be exact -- and while that sounds cool, its actual usefulness isn't immediately apparent.
All you have to do is install the app on your Android device (2.1 or newer), run the server program on your Windows or Mac PC, and ...

Adobe, the software giant behind the monstrously-successful Creative Suite, Reader and Flash, has just racked up its first billion-dollar quarter. Up from $757 million in the same period last year, this represents a 33% year-over-year revenue growth, which is pretty damn massive. Over the entire year, Adobe enjoyed a total revenue of $3.8 billion, up from $2.9 billion in 2009.
With all of the ...

I bring you news that won't shock but will surely delight! Just over 40% of Steam users have a BitTorrent client installed -- and 75% of those are using uTorrent. Mainline is second with about 10%, with Vuze and BitComet coming in third and fourth place respectively.
These delicious statistics have emerged thanks to Steam's hardware and software survey which now includes a breakdown of ...

If you own an Android phone, I hope you have Swype installed. I don't think I'm overstating it when I say that Swype is by far the most awesomest input mechanism ever invented for software keyboards.
But maybe you don't like swiping your finger across your screen. Maybe you like jabbing away at a hard, low-feedback, RSI-inducing touch screen. Maybe you're a closet masochist who likes ...

A few days ago, the Microsoft vice president of Corporate Communications shared some figures with the rest of the world. Total sales, downloads, visitors, subscriptions -- numbers. It's a blog post of numbers.
TechCrunch calls it passive-aggressive. I call it smug, reassured braggatry -- the kind that only 800lb gorillas can pull off. If you want a full analysis of the numbers, read ...

If you've read my review of WriteMonkey, you know how much I love this simple-looking, yet very powerful, full-screen editor. In fact, I use WriteMonkey for all of my Download Squad posts. I find it much easier to focus when I have just my text in front of me, in monospaced font, with no distracting chrome.
I guess you can imagine the disappointment I felt when WriteMonkey stopped working for me ...

"In many cases, sarcasm is difficult even for people to recognise," says Ari Rappoport of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. No shit, Ari, really?
Given a sample set of Amazon product reviews and random Twitter posts, the new sarcasm software agreed with human analysis more than 75% of the time!
While this is a pretty nifty advance for natural language processing, the implications ...

ImgBurn is an excellent, free application for all kinds of burning tasks. Its developer Lightning UK has built a number of improvements into recent versions -- making an already good program even better.
Version 2.5.1 is now available for download and the changelog is a typically lengthy one. Two key alterations are worth noting. First, ImgBurn's disc layout editor view now includes an ...

I hinted that, with Office 2010, Microsoft would be moving the focus of its development towards the cloud, but I had no idea they were quite so involved! As of today, around 75% of its employees are working on cloud-related projects. "A year from now that will be 90 ...

It isn't often that you see the fusion of software, hardware and pure creative genius. You can't deny that this is something else entirely -- seriously, you can stop reading here and just watch the video after the cut.
If you're still here, perhaps seeking a little more convincing, get this: Patrick ...

Build it and they will come...
Build it and they will come!
Holy feces, folks, get this: people are paying for downloadable content.
Yes, stick this in your pipe and smoke it, Mr. MPAA/RIAA/ESA -- Valve's numero uno digital content distribution software, Steam, now has over 25 million active users. Those 25 million users managed a peak concurrency of 2.5 million games players, racking up ...

In 1975 Bill Gates, Paul Allen and a certain unnamed, cloven-hoofed, hot-under-the-collar associate made a pact: to rule the world! It seems, 35 years, billions of dollars and dozens of lawsuits later that they've made it.
For the quarter ending December 2009, Microsoft saw a net, record-breaking profit of 6.66 billion dollars on revenue of 19 billion dollars -- in just three months! Driven by ...

You've probably noticed a complete lack of iPad/iTablet/iSlate news around these parts. That's because we don't cover gadgets, nor do we cover hyperbolic crotch-grabbing fanboy speculation. But now that it's finally been announced (forever will it go down in history that we watched Steve Jobs sit in a leather chair and surf on his iPad), we can finally get down to business.
The iPad, whether ...
