Proving how much it cares about those people who use its app on Linux, Skype has released version 2.2 for Linux. Don't run towards the champagne though, as this is still a beta version, and, as its minor revision number implies, isn't the much-awaited big new version that achieves feature parity with its Windows and Mac brethren.
It's only been what, almost 15 months since the last Skype ...

Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.
Beyond improved call quality, not much has changed. You can now see your friends' presence icons when contact cards are ...

Skype for Mac got an update yesterday bringing it to version 5.1. The recommended upgrade allows for easier group calling thanks to the ability to focus in on active speakers within a conference call. You can now dial recently called numbers direct from the dial pad too, which should speed up calls to frequently used numbers or contacts. A call quality feedback mechanism has also been added that ...

The GNU Project has begun laying the groundwork for another piece of "Free as in Freedom" software. This time, the group has its sights set on developing a Skype alternative which rivals the original in ease of use and functionality.
Dubbed GNU Free Call, the program will rely on a "self-aware, meshed calling network" to deliver secure, anonymous VoIP. The GNU SIP Witch server will provide the ...

Skype has announced a new change to its desktop app, but this particular feature addition isn't about functionality, it's about monetization. Yes, advertisements are coming to Skype. On the upside, they'll only appear on the Skype Home tab -- so they won't get in the way of your actual chat sessions.
The blog post also states that only the U.S., U.K., and Germany will be seeing ads ...

Vivox offers a Facebook app which allows you to voice chat with your friends as you browse the site from your desktop, but what about while you're out and about? A mobile option would be nice, too. That's what the developers at Crisp App think, too, and its iPhone app lets you do just that.
Grab Facebook Messenger for $2.99 in the App Store, and you'll have a convenient way to voice chat with ...

Besides the previously-unseen webOS 3.0 and introducing new hardware in the form of a tablet and two smartphones, HP had some other gems under its sleeves at today's Think Beyond event. Taking center stage at the event was HP's new TouchPad, its first webOS tablet.
There was more on display than hardware of course. We now know the TouchPad will get an official Amazon Kindle application, that, ...

Users of the Skype iPhone app can now install an update which enables video calling to Skype contacts on more devices, including Skype-enabled TVs. While there still aren't a ton of sets which support the popular voice and video chat app, Skype really only began sidling its way into the living room last year -- so expect more models to appear in 2011.
Here's hoping that Skype hurries up and ...

It seems that Skype 5 for Mac, by design, blocks any other application from using your webcam while it's installed. A commenter on the bug report suggests that it also affects Windows machines, but we were unable to replicate the bug with Windows 7.
The crazy thing is that you have to uninstall Skype 5 before using your webcam with other programs, including Flash applets on websites. It almost ...

Skype 5 for Mac is now out of beta, bringing its shiny new single-window interface to the masses. Early adopters have gotten used to having contacts, chats and video in the same window, but it's a big adjustment for folks who will be upgrading from Skype 2.8.
For people who've been using Skype 5 Beta, the final version has some pluses and minuses. The good news is that Skype has slimmed down ...

We're not very big fans of browser toolbars to begin with, and today's news from Mozilla is a perfect example of why. The Mozilla team has decided to block the Skype plug-in, citing serious stability and performance issues. Skype will be added to Mozilla's plug-in blocklist, though users will be prompted and given the option to re-enable it if they wish.
As Stephen Shankland points out over at ...

Skype hit a new significant milestone yesterday, by having, at one point, no less than 27 million people simultaneously connected to its service. Skype's previous record, of 25 million users signed onto the service at the same time, was achieved back in November.
Adding two million concurrent users in little more than a month is undoubtedly connected to the launch of Skype video calling for iOS ...

Skype has announced it will acquire mobile video service Qik. In a blog post (and accompanying video) Skype CEO Tony Bates said that Qik's technology and team of 60 employees will complement Skype's existing video calling service. Qik is a cross-platform mobile app that can broadcast and save video from a wide variety of mobile devices. It currently has over 5 million users.
