Based on a post from the Windows Team blog, it appears as though users are indeed heading "to the cloud!" Live Mesh -- the company's cross-device synchronization and remoting platform -- now boasts more than 5 million connected devices.
From those devices, 3 million users have pushed more than 2.2 petabytes to the Windows Live cloud. That's a whole lotta data -- but we wonder how much higher ...

The way webOS handles task switching -- via its card interface -- is one of my favorite features of Palm/HP's mobile OS. Microsoft seems to like it, too, at least that's what we assume since the Windows Phone 7 multitasking update will bring a very similar experience. In the image above, you can see a zoomed-out display of all currently running apps, which you'll be able to flick through and tap ...

Microsoft has released OneNote Mobile for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch today, and it's the first application in the Office suite to make it to iOS. Microsoft's SkyDrive storage is used to sync notes between the iOS app and the other OneNote clients (for Windows, Web, and Windows Phone 7).
OneNote Mobile lets you access, create, and edit your notes and lists on your iOS device. You can create ...

SkyDrive is a fantastic cloud storage option that many people still don't know about. With 25GB of free space for your synced files, Hotmail attachments, and Office Web docs, it's worth signing up for an account (if you don't already have a Windows Live passport). What's even better is that SkyDrive storage can be accessed by other apps -- like sorami-skydrive for Android.
Install the app, ...

Fancy a bit of cloud storage on your future Windows Phone 7 device? Not a corporate drone? Well you might be in luck if the rumors reported by LiveSide hold any truth to them. Apparently the Office Hub, which at the moment just supports corporate based SharePoint Workspace document sync, will get sync support for Windows Live SkyDrive in a January update.
This would allow you to sync any ...

Despite our woeful lack of coverage for Office Web Apps, I'm glad to announce that Microsoft has been keeping its cloud-computing cogs churning: Office Web Apps has, in its first 100 days, been used by over 20 million people, and is now available in seven more countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Russia and Switzerland.
You can also now embed PowerPoint presentations and ...

When Microsoft revealed the first beta version of Windows Live Essentials, a number of Live Mesh users were a little miffed. In addition to dropping the name, Microsoft dialed back the free storage space from 5GB to 2GB.
Today, however, they've announced that they're going to take a mulligan and un-re-name Live Sync. It's going to be called Live Mesh after all, and more importantly you're also ...

Late last week Google turned on 'public sharing' in Docs. You could always share files with friends or via an obfuscated 'secret link', but the idea of public, searchable links is something new. Not only is it an issue for piracy -- I tested it with a 350MB TV show, and it worked fine! -- but this could also be the opening salvo of Google's counterattack against Dropbox and Microsoft's SkyDrive.

Got a SkyDrive account? If not, you should get one. It's 25GB of free storage -- which you can map to a local drive on your computer -- and the only limitation is files can't exceed 50MB each. That makes it a perfect place to store photos, music -- and Office files.
And now, it's also a great place to edit and create Office files. Yes, Microsoft's free Office Web Apps are now integrated into ...

A few weeks ago I shared a (fairly) simple way to map local drive letters to your Live SkyDrive shares. It's a nice -- albeit somewhat slow -- way to access and manipulate your files in the cloud.
In my tutorial, I used Microsoft Office 2010's save to web functionality to find the URLs I needed. As it turns out, there's a much easier way: SkyDrive Simple Viewer.
Extract the .zip file to a ...

Live SkyDrive is an awesome service. 25GB of web storage for free? Yeah, that sounds good to me. Sure, the 50MB per file limit is a little bit of a downside but it's still a great place to store documents, music, and photos.
Heck, if you tell an app like 7zip to chunk big files up into 50MB pieces you can store whatever the heck you want. If only there was a way to access your SkyDrive storage ...

A lot of people overlook Microsoft's SkyDrive for free, web-based file storage and sharing. Still, it's tough to argue with 25gb of free space for your digital goodies that you can access from anywhere. SkyDrive Explorer is a free shell enhancement for Windows that makes it even better.
Once you install SkyDrive Explorer, you'll see a new icon in My Computer (under "Other"). Double click it to ...

No, Windows won't ever compete with Linux on price. However, even though Microsoft isn't giving away their RTM operating systems for free, they do offer a lot of great software and services at no charge. Here are my six favorites -- feel free to share yours with us in the comments! 1. Windows Live Writer - If you don't blog, Live Writer probably isn't that useful to you. If you do, though, it's ...

Microsoft is rolling out a number of changes to its Live.com portal and Windows Live suite of applications. In a nutshell, the company is trying to add social networking-style features to the web portal. Users will be able to create profile pages where they can connect to other friends, share images and other media, and post short status updates. In other words, it looks a lot like Facebook. But ...
