It occurred to us, after writing yesterday's list of Chrome keyboard shortcuts, that there was one glaring omission: bookmark shortcuts.
Not only does the Bookmark Bar take up valuable real estate, but no one really wants to click through folders of bookmarks to find what you're looking for.
Now, Firefox has 'Smart bookmarks', which lets you add a keyword to a bookmark. Chrome, however, ...

Ubuntu's new Unity interface already drew some raised eyebrows because of its looks, which are arguably similar to the Windows 7 taskbar. Now, the Ask Ubuntu site has posted a list of Unity keyboard shortcuts -- and those take a cue from Windows 7 as well.
The super key, which typically refers to the Windows key on most standard keyboards, invokes the Unity Launcher -- on Windows, this ...

Pinning programs, folders, and even frequently used documents to your Windows 7 taskbar can be a real time-saver. Certain folders, however, aren't so easy to add -- especially if you want them right on the taskbar and not buried in the Explorer jump list.
Windows 7 Taskbar Items Pinner makes pinning everything from your downloads folder to the control panel to network connections as easy ...

You may have tried to pin a document or file you work on frequently to your Windows 7 taskbar, only to learn that it's too smart for that. Instead, you wind up with a pinned item for the program associated with the file's type, with your file pinned to the jump list. After reading a writeup at Lifehacker earlier today, I couldn't help thinking there was an easier solution than what they proposed ...

SecondShell is a tool that makes window management both less fiddly and more keyboard shortcut oriented. It doesn't actually do a whole lot (it's only 200 kilobytes!), but it adds such handy features that you'll wonder why Windows doesn't include them by default.
First, you can resize windows by holding down Alt+Right click and dragging the mouse anywhere in the window. Alt+Left click moves ...

There is always at least two ways of doing something on a Windows PC. If you've learnt by doing, rather than from a book, you probably only know one way. Watch your mother use a word processor one day -- I bet she uses File > Save rather than hitting Ctrl+S. What about ...

Looking for an easy-to-configure, uncomplicated launcher that looks good? Check out Krento.
Download and install the app, and it parks in your system tray. You can bring Krento up either by pressing windows + C or right-clicking the tray icon. You can also activate it by double-clicking the "pulsar" - the bullseye in the bottom right. To enable the pulsar, just right click the tray icon.

Finding the proper balance in your power management scheme can be challenging; sometimes you need all the horsepower you can get, while other times battery life is your top priority. If you find yourself regularly navigating to your power management settings as your priorities change, you might benefit from being able to create hotkeys that will instantly switch you to a different power management ...

It happens to everyone, and it's annoying. Sometimes the wrong tab gets closed in Firefox, but it's OK. There's a solution to the problem, and it comes in the form of CTRL + SHIFT + T in Windows or COMMAND + SHIFT + T in Mac OS X. We've covered other solutions in the past such as Unclosetab, a Firefox extension that adds a right-click option to reopen a closed tab. Another easy way to reopen a ...

Adam Pash's latest "Hack Attack" column over at Lifehacker is a great guide to making the most of bookmark keywords in Firefox. In case you're not familiar, Firefox lets you assign keywords to your bookmarks which serve as shortcuts: For example, if you assign the keyword "dls" to your Download Squad bookmark, from then on you can just type "dls" in your address bar to get here. But if you're ...

Have I mentioned that I use the command line a lot? Yeah, I'm pretty sure I have. At any rate, one of the most useful features of the Windows command line, which I'm sure many of you use very day, is tab completion. In short, instead of having to type out an entire long filename, you can just type the beginning of it, press tab, and its name will be completed for you. This is especially handy for ...

Bill Clementson calls Conkeror "Firefox for Emacs," which, while not entirely accurate, is an apt description. In actuality Conkeror is an extension for Firefox that makes it possible to control it exclusively by keyboard with keystrokes that match Emacs, the popular text-editor-and-then-some, as closely as possible. But Conkeror goes way beyond keystrokes, making Firefox behave like Emacs as ...

I've been using Excel for a long time and might even consider myself a power user, so I'm surprised I never came across this tip before: You can toggle a formula view to see all of a spreadsheet's formulas at once by pressing Ctrl+`. That little fleck, in case it's not entirely clear, is a backtick (or, as this site takes way too many paragraphs to explain, a gravé), i.e. the seldom-used ...

Awhile back I featured
Keyconfig, a Firefox extension that lets you customize all of
Firefox's keyboard shortcuts and one of my favorites. As powerful as Keyconfig is, though, it turns out there's a lot
more you can do with it. Out of the box, Keyconfig only lets you change shortcuts for functions Firefox already has
keyboard shortcuts for, but there's a couple ways to introduce brand new keyboard ...
