Google updates post-earthquake Japan satellite images for Google Earth and Maps
Google has teamed up with its satellite imagery provider, GeoEye, to create updated satellite images of Japan since the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit. Google has integrated the images into both Google Earth, using a KML file, and Google maps. They've also released the high resolution images through a Picasa album, all in the vein of trying to help co-ordinate relief efforts and help ...
OK, maybe it's my inner explorer, scientist and photographer speaking when I say this, but: DESKTOP EARTH IS AWESOME.
It's so simple, yet so damn beautiful. All the developer has done is grab a bunch of images from NASA and compiled them into a program that changes your wallpaper depending on the time of day and the season. Look at the picture above -- click it for a larger view if you like.

First, let me just say that I don't own either an iPhone or an iPad -- but when something looks this good, I can't ignore it. It almost makes me want to get an iPad... and a sofa to sit on while I use it...
Anyway, Google Earth 3.0 has been released. It's free, but weighs in at a hefty 13MB... so tether before you download it!
Those of you that have used previous versions won't notice many ...
According to the Wall Street Journal, Google has partnered up with satellite TV provider Dish Network to test out a new set-top device powered by Google software. Although the WSJ doesn't name its sources, they seemed to know an awful lot about Google's plans with Dish.

So far, there is no IP routing in space. That's scheduled to change with the impending launch of the Department of Defense's Internet Routing in Space (IRIS) project. Once in orbit, the first IRIS satellite will act like a router, feeding packets to other satellites and essentially creating the first permanent IP network in space. Limited ability to address orbiting birds has existed since the ...

DaylightMap is the sort of thing you'd think some Google engineer would have done in his 20% time already. It's a Google Maps mashup that shows the Earth as it is: partly in sunlight, partly in shadow. It uses images from NASA to show Earth's man-made evening lights. By default DaylightMap shows the Earth as it is right now, but you can choose any time and date you wish. You can also switch to a ...
Yahoo! continues its slow
creep up on Google in the web services department with a significant upgrade to Yahoo! Maps. The major change in the new release is global satellite imagery
with, of course, an emphasis on U.S. cities. They've also added medium-resolution maps for cities around the world, and
developers will be pleased to know they've released Version 3 of the Yahoo! Maps API to take ...
