Yahoo! rolling out Google Instant-like previews

While it's not going to win points for a catchy name, Yahoo's new Rich Search Assist will provide some slick new functionality to its users. It's a bit like Google Suggest meets Google Instant Previews. Unlike Instant, however, Yahoo's previews appear in a floating element and only cover the top half of the page. Hover over a suggestion in the left column, and the preview appears on the right.

Yahoo's contextual customizations still appear in the previews as well -- like the Canon Eos pricing and specs in the screenshot or pro sports team snapshots. Rich Search assist is currently only available to a small number of testers, but it should be rolling out to all Yahoo! users in the very near future.

How to enable Google Instant Previews in Opera

Google's new Instant Previews are a nice addition, providing a thumbnailed look at results before you click through. Opera users, however, can't use the feature by default. Fortunately, it's a trivial task to get previews working in the Big Red O -- here's how to do it.

Browse to http://www.google.com/webhp?sclient=psy;
Right-click in some blank space and choose edit site preferences
When the preferences window appears, click the network tab
Change the browser identification drop-down to read identify as Firefox
Reload the page and try a search!

The trick works just fine on Opera 10.63, but I didn't have any luck on Opera 11. If you've got the know-how to enable Instant Previews in the latest Opera build, share it in the comments!

Instant Previews now available on Google search results

Last month, Google began beta testing instant search previews -- a la Bing or Ask. The feature, now dubbed Instant Previews, shows you a preview of what the search result looks like. Today, Google has announced that previews have been officially turned on and are now rolling out across the globe.

Initial impressions of the feature were mixed here at Download Squad, with many users preferring Bing's approach. Bing, of course, offers more text from pages -- which is often a bit more useful than a downscaled image of the entire page's content.

Google Video does movie trailers

Google Video has a new Movie Previews section that lists trailers for new and upcoming movies. This isn't groundbreaking, I know, but it's a nice, clean implementation, easily superior to the Google Video home page and, in my opinion, easier to navigate than Apple's movie trailers section. Of course, the video quality is on the par with the rest of Google Video, which is to say the trailers are nowhere near as crisp and pretty as they are on Apple's site (and HD is out of the question). There's also a link to Google's movie search for finding local showtimes, but where heavy integration would be a no-brainer, there is none. It's safe to assume Google intends for showtimes and other information to be shown alongside trailers, but that it's not implemented yet is a disappointment.
