Sure, this is an expected development seeing as Google has been snapping up VoIP companies and expanding Google Voice, but it's still awesome news. Alex Chitu of Google OS has reported that they're in the process of testing full-on Voice integration in Gmail.
When I noticed the UI tweaks in Gmail chat yesterday, I suspected something was up. Right now, it's mostly cosmetic. Soon enough, ...

The good news is that the latest update to Skype for iPhone finally allows you to make calls over AT&T's 3G network. The bad news is that those calls will cost you a "small monthly fee." The fee starts in August for Skype calls to regular numbers, but Skype-to-Skype calls over 3G will still be free until the end of the year.
The fee makes some sense, because Skype over 3G will likely add ...

Skype is seriously considering introducing advertising to keep its popular Internet calling and video chat services free, according to the company's CEO. Skype's Josh Silverman told The Telegraph that any advertising the company does take on will be tasteful. That's good, because I don't think users would put up with ads interrupting their conversations with friends and family members on the other ...

If you're an IT Administrator (or even a developer who's lucky enough to "own" the server your apps run on), you've seen this go down before - you're out and about, having a great time when the phone rings. Something is horribly broken and needs your magic touch right away. Surely it's as simple as bouncing a system process - 2 minutes tops!
Unfortunately, you're nowhere near a PC to type in ...

According to Mike Arrington at TechCrunch, Google has begun testing a Skype-like Google Voice desktop app. The new app uses VoIP technology that was acquired by Google when it bought out Gizmo5 late last year. That means you could soon be taking calls to your Google Voice number, right on your desktop.
It's only an internal test so far, so there's no public beta to download. If TechCrunch's ...

Like what you've seen of the Windows Phone 7 Metro interface? Wish you could make your desktop look like it?
Wish granted! A group of DeviantArt users has created the Omnimo theme for Rainmeter, the highly-customizable desktop information app for Windows. As you can see, Omnimo is a very faithful port of Metro's angular, widgety good looks. Like most good Rainmeter themes, Omnimo is packed ...

Did you know that the Xbox 360 is just a PC in a box? Sure, the inputs are different and you generally attach it to a TV -- but still, internally, it's PC hardware. You can even use the controllers with your PC if you like! The Xbox doesn't run Windows though; and despite its name, ...

While the Skype experience on Windows Mobile handsets was determined to be "unsatisfactory," phones running Nokia's SymbianOS (more than 200 million worldwide) now have access to the immensely popular VOIP app.
In an official blog posting, Skype's Peter Parks reports that the app is now available for download in Nokia's Ovi store and directly from Skype via this link. The app supports voice ...

Not only will the next version of Microsoft Exchange transcribe telephone calls, it'll go one step further: Microsoft is also trying to translate telephone calls in real time. You're speaking English, she's speaking Russian -- but you can both understand each other! HOW COOL IS THAT?
It was only a matter of time, of course -- and Google's also working on the same tech -- but still, watch the ...

With all the hype around Apple's release of the iPad, other big Apple announcements have slipped by without the attention they deserve. For example, Apple's updated iPhone SDK allows VoIP calls over 3G. That's a pretty big deal for Skype users, who can now use VoIP like a regular phone, without being tethered to areas with wifi coverage. It doesn't work for me on the latest version of Skype, but ...

Google Voice and Google Chrome are two great tastes that taste great together, thanks to a new version of the Google Voice extension for Chrome. The extension gives you quick toolbar access to Voice features, including dialing, voicemail transcripts and SMS. What's more, phone numbers on webpages become click-to-call links, so you don't even have to type a number into your phone or paste it ...

If you're looking to make VoIP calls on your Android phone, London-based Truphone might have the app for you. Truphone just released an update to its Android app that makes it compatible with Google's Nexus One. It now works on five Android devices.
In stark contrast to the VoIP situation on the iPhone, where developers frequently run into problems with Apple's approval process, Truphone's ...

Every time Skype for iPhone gets an update, there's a glimmer of hope that we'll be able to make calls over 3G again. Apple has re-opened the possibility, but hasn't yet approved the app that makes it possible. While the new Skype 1.3 might not be the golden ticket to dialing without wi-fi, it does offer some slick features to keep us happy in the meantime, including a horizontal keyboard and a ...

Google Voice is great for voicemail and text transcription, call forwarding, and a bunch of other useful phone-related services, but it's not a full VoIP solution like Skype. That could change in 2010, though, especially since Google acquired Gizmo5, a company that develops technology for web-to-web and web-to-phone calls. Owning Gizmo5 doesn't necessarily mean Google's going to compete with ...

When GrandCentral evolved into Google Voice, it was only a matter of time before the old GrandCentral website went to the big page archive in the sky. Google's killing off the old, redundant site on December 31st, 2009. Why the heck is this news? After all, GrandCentral users can all upgrade to Google Voice. Well, it turns out that GrandCentral's website has something that Google Voice doesn't: ...
