The beta release of My.Netscape drops tomorrow as a new, improved personalized start page. The enhanced UI is clean and clutter free with no ads (so far). You have access to almost 100 modules to customize your page, including our very own Download Squad module (shameless plug warning) and you can add your own RSS feeds too. There are however some "not yet's" you might find yourself wishing for, ...

It's not question that the United States patent system has got some issues. So what's the latest proposal by the US Patent and Trademark Office? Recruit the wisdom of the masses. A pilot project launching soon will put patent applications up on the web, allowing visitors to the site to post comments. There'll also be a rating system for comments, pushing the most popular comments to the top of the ...

The social voting scene has been a proven winner with Digg starting it all off, and many other websites entering the mix. With Microsoft recently jumping on it as well with sites focusing on Norwegian and Belgian content, could there be a new shift towards social voting sites built by market leading companies? It appears Dell thinks so. Dell recently launched their Ideastorm site. The website ...

Microsoft has jumped on the social news bandwagon, creating two websites with a digg like social voting style. One for Norwegian consumers, the other for French Belgians. The sites let users submit news, headlines, and blog postings that other users can vote on. Similar to the Digg and Netscape models, users check out the latest stories while voting and commenting on their favorites. Users can ...

Okay, let's work through some naming confusion for a second: These days Netscape is a pretty multi-faceted brand, but for the purposes of this post we're talking about just two of those facets: Netscape.com, the web site recently reborn as a social news site, and Netscape Browser, the web browser that you download, install on your computer, and use to browse web sites... like Netscape.com. Got it? ...

Get badged, by going to badged.net, where you can simply build a custom badge widget for your site or blog. The list of available badges you can include in your custom widget is pretty good:
Digg This Story
Sphere It
Add to Technorati Favorites
View Blog Reactions (via Technorati)
Add to del.icio.us
Add to Furl
Add to Netscape
Add to Yahoo! Myweb
Add to Google Bookmarks ...

One aspect of the Yahoo! experience that always left me shaking my head is the News Message Boards. Easily accessible from a "Discuss" link at the bottom of news stories, it was the stomping grounds of trolls and other hate mongers with little to no social value, unless of course you are a troll. But now I say, "Hallelujah!" Break out the bubbly and do a little jig on the table because the powers ...

If you've ever had the good fortune of having one of your websites or blog posts dugg to the point of showing up on digg's homepage, you've enjoyed a huge traffic boost to your site. This is wonderful for web publishers, and I'm not going to lie and say that we don't care about it here at Download Squad; in fact, since the success of a given post is measured in large part by the traffic it drives ...

I have used (and still do) a bunch of video upload services, all the usuals, YouTube, Vimeo, Uncut, Google, and some unusual ones as well. I must say I can't get over how simple and elegant the simplicity of Netscape video is. Of course by now I'm sure you know that this blog, and Netscape are owned by AOL, so some of you are saying, "geez, what a cheap plug," but it's not. Netscape makes video ...

This one's for all you Windows-using digg fans out there. For awhile now Mac users have had a swanky little application called DiggUpdate that presents a tidy little window with information about the status of the articles you submit to digg on your desktop. I've seen many comments from Windows users begging for something similar for Windows, and now their wish has come true. DiggUpdate is now ...

Feisty young social news site Netscape.com, raised from the ashes of the old Netscape portal about 10 weeks ago, gained its 50,000th member today. (Disclosure: Download Squad and Netscape.com are both AOL properties, and I'm one of Netscape's Navigators.) The 50,000th member goes by the name of zvyozd, which frankly sounds like an alias to me. Though some people would argue that arbitrary ...

I love Digg. Oops, am I allowed to say that? I'm sure it's okay. Anyway, I love Digg, but I find it sort of really overwhelming. I don't mind admitting that some of the best downloads I write about here come from social news sites like Digg, Netscape, Delicious, etc. But it's really hard to keep up with the information that flows from these sites - it's like standing in the line of fire of a ...

Are you a member of Digg, Netscape, Reddit, and del.icio.us? Are you looking to promote your site, or just keep all of your bookmarks spread out? Enger DiggScapeRedlicious. It's a bookmarklet (or favelet, if you prefer) that helps you submit a site to all four of the above social bookmark/news sites simultaneously. Drag it to your bookmarks toolbar and thereafter clicking on it will open each of ...

For I don't know how long, Yahoo! News has provided the means to rate (aka recommend) news stories. It's not a simple "thumbs up/down" but a five-star scale. At the top of each topic page at Yahoo! News you can find links to "Most emailed," "Most viewed," and "Most recommended." The most recommended stories bubble to the top at several places (along with their respective RSS feeds):
All news ...

It's not entirely inaccurate to call the new Netscape (which replaced the old Netscape.com late last night) a "Digg clone," but it's surely not the first. But if I asked you how many other Digg clones are out there, what would you guess? Twenty-five? Fifty? Yeah, more like 200+. Blog 3spots has created a constantly-updated list of the Digg-alikes on dozens of topics and in dozens of different ...
