I feel strongly about net neutrality -- and you may have some solid opinions about it, too. But what about your mother or your grandfather? Do they care enough about net neutrality to make a stand, or even understand what the fuss is all about?
The Open Internet is a nice little website that strives to explain the topic with very little text, and lovely vector graphics. It flows from top to ...

Not one to let the hyperconservative Australian government walk away with the censorship crown, the UK government plans to make the surfing of Internet porn opt-in. Next month, Communications Minister Ed Vaizey will meet with major UK ISPs to discuss a blanket block of porn. Rather than porn being available to all, UK surfers will have to contact their ISP to be allowed on a 'porn surfing ...

Well, geez, color me embarrassed. If you've read my original post about Google's net neutrality proposal, you probably know I got hoodwinked by Google's promises of an FCC-regulated, perfectly neutral wired internet, which turned out to be nothing more than a sleight-of-hand distraction from its suspicious lack of promises of neutrality on wireless networks and future technologies.
Yeah, wires ...

Although Google and Verizon's proposal for net neutrality legislation definitely suggested giving the FCC additional power over broadband communications, the FCC commissioner isn't exactly thrilled with it. The Google-Verizon plan had "many problems," said Commissioner Michael J. Copps, in a very short response (available as a PDF).
Here's his whole statement:
"Some will claim this ...

When Google and Verizon got together last week to talk about net neutrality, everyone -- including the New York Times -- freaked out and assumed that Google was trying to get Verizon to prioritize Google traffic across Verizon's broadband infrastructure. Today, the two companies held a joint press conference to say that the exact opposite is true: both companies are supporting a 7-point plan to ...

It's been a long time since we've heard anything about the Net Neutrality Debate. The last thing we heard was that the FCC wants the Internet to remain neutral (or the American portion of it at least), but for the FCC to have authority over ISPs, and major players like Google and Amazon, the Internet would have to become more formalized. As it stands, the Internet is just an 'information service', ...

I'm back! Back from the cold, grey, barren wastes of the North. It seems, while I've been away, that people have busy been pissing around with things that really should be left well alone. First, you surely heard about the crazy Appeals Court decision that Comcast could do whatever it likes to the users of its network. I could try to describe this lunacy in words, but a guttural noise says it ...

Comcast just won its appeal of a 2008 FCC ruling, and BitTorrent users may end up the losers. Comcast was effectively blocking torrents using "network management" techniques, and the FCC ordered them to make their network management scheme public and stop singling out BitTorrent traffic. This week's Court of Appeals ruling reverses that FCC decision and gives Comcast free reign again, TorrentFreak ...

There's been a long-raging debate as to just whether the US Government will enforce net neutrality - 2006 saw the Internet Non-Discrimination Act proposed, in 2007 the Department of Justice announced it wouldn't be legislating net neutrality and the ISPs have openly admitted they will actively manage traffic. However, that may soon be at an end. According to the Wall Street Journal, the FCC is ...

If you like yourself some BitTorrent downloading action, we recommend you help Azureus fight BitTorrent throttling ISPs like Comcast, Adelphia, SusCom, and others by installing the Network Status Monitor plug-in for Azureus / Vuze. The plug-in monitors your network traffic for anything that might prohibit your computer from utilizing its broadband connection to the fullest.
Lately, some ISPs ...

Net Neutrality is a subject that has impassioned internet enthusiasts and techies alike. However trying to get the broader public to take notice of the issue has been challenging. A few net neutrality bills have been brought up, but quickly fizzled out in Congress. Perhaps the fine Senators don't really understand the "Tubes". Or is it they and the public have had no real reason to care so far? ...

Last week, news broke that Comcast may be paying a steep FCC fine to the tune of $1.77 trillion dollars for throttling peer-to-peer traffic such as BitTorrent. Yesterday, Comcast confirmed that it has received official word that it is under the investigation of the FCC, but an FCC spokesman would not confirm the letter, saying that "Enforcement Bureau communications of this type were not to be ...

digg_url = "http://downloadsquad.switched.com/2008/01/09/atandt-openly-says-it-may-filter-internet-content/";According to Brad Stone over at The New York Times, AT&T openly stated at CES that they may start filtering Internet content. This is a very big announcement because most ISPs (even Comcast) have up until this point claimed to be net neutral. So much for being a wide-open pathway to ...

The debacle not only created a firestorm of bad press for the nation's largest cable provider but also re-ignited the nationwide debate about Net Neutrality. We had numerous signs that Comcast was inhibiting ...
