Yahoo! fixed a little flaw this week in Yahoo! Messenger for Windows that could have been used by hackers. The flaw was in the ActiveX control and allowed hackers to crash a chat session and Internet Explorer. Worse, it could have executed malicious code on the victim's machine. The initiation could have taken place if hackers prompted users to view HTML code that linked to a web site with ...

Microsoft has released a beta version of Windows Live Messenger 8.1 over at Live.com. It's not an enormous update, but it does add a few nice features to the IM client. Among them are a "Roaming Identity," meaning you can (optionally) have your display picture and personal message follow you wherever you login, an improved emoticon, background, and display picture menu that shows you ...

GAIM 2.0 is now in its beta 4 testing phase and I must say that it is simpler, a little easier, and seems to work a bit better. This version seems to be same as the last in most ways, though I do like the new system tray icon turned on by default. This keeps the GAIM program running instead of exiting when you click close, which brings GAIM to the level of many other IM clients. That's the thing, ...

I know this wasn't true when Yahoo! Messenger with Voice first came out, but it looks like they've taken a page from Skype's book and stopped charging for calls to 800 numbers.
I dial into conference calls all the time, and I have much better wi-fi at home than cell coverage, so I love to use Y! IM to make the call. This morning, I noticed a line at the bottom telling me there was no charge.

File this under 'It's about bloody time...' Way back in October 2005, Yahoo! and Microsoft announced they were going to connect their IM networks together. It's been a while since then, with little communication, but you can now join the public beta program(s) that allow you to add people from either network to either client. Until I read this post on the Unofficial Yahoo Blog, I had totally forgotten about Microsoft's promise way back in October to make Windows Live Messenger (the successor to MSN Messenger, currently in public beta) interoperable with the Yahoo! Messenger network. Somewhat surprisingly, though, they haven't forgotten, and according to Leah (apparently Microsoft developers don't have last names) at ...
