Ever since the introduction of cameras to mobile phones people have been snapping photos of just about everything on their daily travels. The dawn of the smartphone brought the ability to share things to a wider audience than MMS could reach, and when the smartphone collided with decent-enough camera modules, the social photo sharing craze kicked off.

The iPhone hasn't escaped the deluge of photo sharing apps -- in fact you could say that the hotbed of social photo sharing has focused somewhat around Apple's idea of the perfect phone, with more and more apps and services cropping up each day. So it's about time we had a little round up of the best photo sharing apps and services available for the iPhone, to cut through the tripe and show you the goods.
Continue reading Five great photo sharing apps for your iPhone

Five great photo sharing apps for your iPhone originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 13:30:00 EST. Happy Data Privacy Day! While Lee already published one roundup showing a multitude of various tools, this post is all about Firefox!

If you're reading Download Squad, you already know all of these classics. Kudos to you! Now go ahead and let your less computer-savvy coworkers or family members read this list, and make sure they install at least one of these if they use Firefox at all.

HTTPS Everywhere is an add-on by the beardies over at the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation). It forces Firefox to communicate using HTTPS (secure HTTP) with a number of major websites, such as Google, Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, PayPal and others.

Ghostery focuses on those corporations and institutions bent on tracking your movements around the Web (or on their own websites). It detects when you're being tracked by Google Analytics, Facebook and over 400 other ad networks, and provides an easy way to block those tracking mechanisms while leaving all other JavaScript functionality intact.

Web of Trust provides a clear "traffic light" indication showing which sites you can trust with your credit card details, and which sites you should be leery of. The ratings are user-generated, and you don't have to access the actual website in question to view them - they show up right on the search results page when you use Google, Yahoo!, Bing and even Wikipedia.

NoScript is somewhat similar to Ghostery mentioned above, in that it also blocks JavaScript. But it's a more extreme solution: Rather than just block trackers, it implements a "white list", blocking all JavaScript except for scripts running on domains you trust. One of its many advantages is that it protects against cross-site scripting attacks.

BetterPrivacy protects you against a different kind of cookie - one that you can't flush just by clearing your browser history. These cookies are called Local Storage Objects, or Flash cookies, and are put on your computer using the Flash plug-in. BetterPrivacy scrubs these cookies off your system every time your exit your browser.

So, you found a brand-new Android device under the tree a few days ago. Congratulations! Now what? In this post I'm going to recommend the very best apps to get off on the right foot with Android. If you've been using Android for a while, chances are you know most of these. Still, you might find a hidden gem or two. These are all based on my own use, so while the list is subjective in nature, these are not just shiny apps we've noticed in the market -- they have all been tested in real life for quite some time. Here goes:
Right now, Steam is running all kinds of crazy year-end deals and there are loads of games you can buy at crazy low prices. But maybe you're all tapped out right now -- and you'd like to get your hands on some fun games without having to shell out your remaining hard-earned cash?

No worries! We just pointed out 20 great free programs to install on your new system, and it's just as easy to find plenty of free games. First, some good news about your new Windows 7 computer: it's got some really great free games installed like Mahjong Titans and the much nicer-looking Solitaire.

Now, onward to the free games!
Continue reading Free games for your new Windows computer

Free games for your new Windows computer originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 24 Dec 2010 11:45:00 EST. The holiday season has always been a time for gathering -- but in recent years, it's also been a time when family and friends come bearing gifts of computer troubles. Their computer friends -- people like the Download Squad team and you, our readers -- get asked to do everything from installing RAM upgrades to the annual computer tune-up. We're happy to oblige, of course, because there's a decent chance someone will pay us in beer or baked goods. Cash is welcome too, but never seems to be offered quite as readily.

To make your holiday tech duties a bit easier, I've put together a list of some of my favorite troubleshooting apps for Windows.
Where download links for the files aren't on the application's main page, I've included a link to the appropriate download page. I've provided a handful of FileHippo links as well -- they're an excellent mirror site and they don't surround download links in advertisements or "recommendations."
Continue reading 15+ free Windows apps to help you tackle Thanksgiving tech support

15+ free Windows apps to help you tackle Thanksgiving tech support originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 21 Nov 2010 10:55:00 EST. It is, however, a very different service than when it started. What used to be a great place to find interesting links and hilarious commentary has become, for almost all intents and purposes, a Twitter clone.

Digg isn't about to shut its doors, but I do get the feeling that regular, loyal Diggers are looking to take their custom elsewhere. Judging by the 'Reddit incident' on Monday, where Digg users revolted in favor of Reddit, it looks like a mass exodus might already have begun.

So, if you're a disenfranchised Digger, or if you're just looking for the best of the rest when it comes to social news aggregators and content discovery, take a look at this list of alternatives!
Download Squad's regular readers are smarter than the average bear when it comes to software. You're familiar with the apps we review -- or brave enough to go try them out if you haven't. Your friends and family probably aren't quite as up to speed, and they should be. There are loads of excellent free programs out there that could be saving them time and preventing headaches -- if they only had the right tools!

Let's check out five programs that they should know about...

CCleaner (pictured above)
There are banner ads all over the place for tune-up programs and registry repair or cleaning apps, but most of them are about as useful as lips on a chicken. CCleaner, on the other hand is great at what it does. Two quick scans with CCleaner can rid your system of gigabytes of temporary files and tidy up crud hiding inside your Windows registry. CCleaner also lets you create a backup of the registry data it removes so that you can put it back if something goes wrong.

One thing to know about: the normal CCleaner installer offers the Ask.com toolbar. Simply uncheck the boxes when they appear to avoid installing it, or download the Slim installer instead.
Continue reading 5 geeky, free Windows programs non-geeks should know about

5 geeky, free Windows programs non-geeks should know about originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 21 Apr 2010 19:00:00 EST. Hey, do you remember Google Bookmarks? I didn't either, until I heard the news that Google Bookmarks now has the ability to create and share lists of links. After a moment of confusion, I realized that Google Bookmarks wasn't a new product, and I started playing with lists.

They're actually quite useful! On top of creating and sharing, you can import all of the bookmarks from a friend's list (or a public list) into your own Google Bookmarks account. You can also open up lists to let your friends, or the public, add new links to them. Since this is a Google product, I don't think you'll be surprised to hear that it also suggests links that might fit into a list you're making.

Bookmarks are in a weird place right now. Sites like Delicious, which looked like the future of bookmarking a few years ago, have become less relevant. Many people are storing their bookmarks locally, and syncing them across machines with plugins like Xmarks or features like Chrome's bookmark sync. If anyone can bring users back to web-based bookmarking, though, it's Google, and a lists feature is an important start.
Google Bookmarks now lets you create and share lists originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 25 Mar 2010 10:05:00 EST. I mean, he really, really likes numbers. He's the guy that publishes an annual report on his life. So yeah, numbers.

He also created a tool that we briefly mentioned awhile back called Daytum. Daytum is a web application that lets you set up any number of various displays tracking virtually anything you want, and presents it in a beautiful way.

Daytum is a great tool for goal tracking. For example, maybe you want to track how many minutes you run every day, or how many push-ups you've done. Or, if you're Merlin Mann, you can track everything related to writing a book, including your maximum number of words written in a session and your average words per day.

A lot of people use the Internet to find porn.

A lot of people use Firefox (go download Firefox 3.6!)

In fact, I'd go as far to suggest that porn surfers -- or at least the search for naughty, illicit, adult-only material -- account for Firefox's biggest market demographic. The 'young' Internet -- blogs, social networks, porn -- is predominantly ruled by the spotty teenagers of the browser world: Firefox and Chrome. Internet Explorer's total market share is larger, but corporations, geriatrics and aging family computers -- i.e. the non-porn world -- account for most of that.

I'm not expecting you to raise your hand or even nod your agreement, but let's face it: most of us, at some time or another, will search for porn. It makes sense to be prepared for such an eventuality -- I think we all know the perils of loud, auto-playing sex music or aggressive pop-ups of hairy, German MILFs that just. won't. close.
6. Windows 7

Yeah, sue me -- while I'm by no means a Microsoft cheerleader, I am a huge Windows fan. 2009 saw the release of, dare I say, the best operating system ever made. Sales figures of both the bundled-with-new-PCs and boxed standalone versions have been massive, blowing all other competitors out of the water. Software support is great, the Superbar is awesome... I'm hard-pushed to think of something bad about Windows 7. I guess the lack of Network Activity icon in the system tray is pretty annoying...

Can I sneak in a quick shout-out to Bing in this section too? It's not that Bing itself is amazing, but the competition with Google and the competitive one-upmanship that it fuels is priceless. It is no coincidence that Google has released a vast number of advances and technologies this year -- we have the scary, looming behemoth of Microsoft to thank for that.

Also, moving into 2010, it's vital that we put Microsoft's awful attempts at advertising behind us.

7. The Cloud, Web Apps, Botnets

2009 was the year of cheap, easily-accessible computing power. As we all know, with great power comes great responsibility! For every Panda Cloud Antivirus, there is a 250,000-zombie botnet that needs taking down. Amazon's EC2 (and scalable storage!) is growing in power, diminishing in cost and being utilized by more and more large-scale services every day. Did you know that Twitter runs in the Amazon Cloud? That's how they've managed to scale so quickly (and turn a profit!) with little initial outlay and tiny numbers of staff.

With Google now fully on board with cloud computing, and invested in its vast array of web apps, we will continue to see more end-users, large corporations and even governments move towards the Cloud in 2010.

8. Real-time news takes over as Twitter gives the faceless Iranian horde a voice

This year, mostly driven by Twitter, we have seen the proliferation of real-time news: proper, breaking news -- not an hour after the fact, but usually within mere minutes. We've always known the Internet to be pretty special and capable of some wild things (like Flash mobs!), but it's not often that we actually hear of the Internet doing something important like this.

With the Iranian presidential 'scandal', Twitter was very suddenly thrown into the limelight. Here, handed on a social media silver platter, was Twitter's legitimacy. Who cares if 80% of all Tweets are about your bout of irritable bowel syndrome if it can also provide a voice for the oppressed protesters in Iran? Twitter's impact was so big that the event has even been nicknamed the 'Twitter Revolution'.

Recognizing the importance of news as-it-happens, most of us now follow BreakingNews (BNO) on Twitter. MSNBC, acknowledging that the conventional news wire is just too damn slow bought them out this year. Who knew that reporting on the Tiger Woods situation 30 minutes after BNO would ever be considered 'slow'... Damn Internet!

9. Google's Online (for now) Domination

I really want to love Google. They do so much good -- they offer so much value for such a low price -- but... part of me remains cautious. I know that while I get to search maps and trawl billions of expertly-indexed websites for free, someone else is footing the bill. Is this capitalism? I pay $300 for a LCD monitor, which Samsung then spends on Google AdWords. Google takes its cut, Samsung turns a juicy profit, and I get tons of free stuff. It sounds pretty damn good to me.

2009 must surely go down in history as one of Google's greatest years. Its stock prices are soaring, their fluid cash reserves are strong and they're buying up bright new start-ups like there's no tomorrow -- recession? What recession? Meanwhile, Microsoft sits in the wings and humbly mumbles to itself about how it 'used to be my job'. I think it's fairly well-accepted that Google is fast becoming the new Microsoft -- the only real difference is the business model. Microsoft struck gold via its monopoly of the operating system market. Google's livelihood is accruing and analyzing your Internet-usage habits.

It's just a question of which method of doing business you prefer. It's very hard to say no to a free lunch though, that's for sure.

10. The Large Hadron Collider runs Linux

The largest science project. The most powerful particle accelerator. The biggest and coolest cryogenic system in the world. And it runs on open-source software. Linux -- Scientific Linux, a modified Red Hat distro, to be exact -- powers a machine that propels atomic nuclei to speeds within 99.9999991% of the speed of light... and then smashes them together! This year saw the first actual collision, and while the boffins at CERN haven't quite worked up to full speed yet, nor have they worked out a way of keeping baguettes out of the system, 2010 should see some really big bangs.

With a total budget of nine billion dollars, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is by far the most expensive scientific experiment ever devised. Hopefully we'll discover crazy new particles and uncover the laws of quantum mechanics. No one knows what's really going to happen -- it's an experiment after all -- but scientists assure us that the creation of a black hole is unlikely. Phew.
It's been a big year for that cute little red panda and 2010 will be just as exciting if not more so!
Continue reading Festive Firefox Friday: 2009 review

Festive Firefox Friday: 2009 review originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 25 Dec 2009 11:50:00 EST. Tweetdeck's latest update brings support for Twitter's most recent new features, including lists and geotagging. In fact, if you're gaga over Twitter lists, I'd venture to say that Tweetdeck is probably the client for you. Tweetdeck's groups feature, which has been one of its biggest selling points since it started, has been rolled into lists. Your old groups will still be there, but new groups you create will be added as Twitter lists, and your current lists will function the way groups always have in Tweetdeck. In terms of making and editing lists, Tweetdeck also seems to have the most useful interface of any client out there.

Other than keeping lists synced up, Tweetdeck has also added geotagging support. You can tag your tweets with locations, and view the locations of other geotagged tweets on inline Google Maps. Yep, the maps pop up right their in your stream. If you're somehow still not convinced that Tweetdeck has gone all-out to keep up with Twitter's features, check out its support for the new retweet format. Like Tweetie 2.1 for iPhone, Tweetdeck shows both avatars on a retweet: the retweeter and the original poster.

Tweetdeck has also added LinkedIn to its various stream-reading options, which already included Facebook. How much longer until they have to stop calling it Tweetdeck, and start calling it Streamdeck or SocialNetworkOverloadDeck?
But I think it will be worth the wait. In just the last month invites for Google Wave have opened right up with second and third generation testers getting invite codes of their own to distribute. Developers and users are now flooding into the new and exciting service. As a result, we're seeing rapid and extensive development of both Robots and Gadgets. This article's about Robots -- if you want Gadgets, we got gadgets, but they will not be covered here. What I've done is compiled a list of useful robots that actually work and seem to be actively maintained. You can find lists of robots all over the place, but they're full of useless and broken bots.

What are Robots in the world of Wave? They are very similar to what you might initially assume: they perform tasks and process data so that you don't have to. Robots are capable of real-time translation, or bringing news and stock tickers into a specific wave. Robots are what make Google's Wave truly powerful and extensible -- they are what allow you to send and receive Twitter tweets and feeds directly into your Wave user interface. In theory, with robots, you could experience most of the Internet from within Google Wave. News, email, games, instant messengers... everything will feed into your Wave inbox.

Share
Prepare to be impressed by these robots... or if you believe in John Connor, Skynet and the eventual cyborg apocalypse, prepare to be afraid; very, very afraid.
Continue reading The Ultimate List of Google Wave Robots

The Ultimate List of Google Wave Robots originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 30 Nov 2009 15:00:00 EST. It's the first major update to Tweetie 2, and it features support for Lists, Geotagging and native retweets.

One of the most-anticipated changes is the way the app displays retweets, with a small version of the retweeter's icon inset on the original poster's. The "quote tweet" option is still available, so if you're a fan of the old-style retweets, you can still use them just as easily.

Tweetie 2.1's support for the list feature includes the ability to create, edit and view lists. To access it, just go to your profile and scroll down. Other people's lists, of course, are found on their own profile pages.

In terms of geolocation, tweets sent using Twitter's new geotag support will show up with a red pin icon in the corner. Clicking the pin will display the city the tweet was sent from, and allow you to zoom in to the precise location of the tweet on a Google Map. You can also geotag your own tweets, of course.

If you want to give Tweetie 2.1 a spin, it's $2.99 in the app store, or a free update for current Tweetie 2 users.
Tweetie 2.1 hits App Store, supports Twitter's new features originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 29 Nov 2009 18:00:00 EST. Enter Listerine. Instead of making you go through pages upon pages of people you follow, this handy web app shows all your Twitter friends in a drag-and-drop interface.

The friends display shows mutual friends with a heart icon, and people who don't follow you back with a star. There's a search field, in case you follow so many people that even this compact grid layout is too difficult to navigate. To add a friend to a list, just grab their icon and drag it. Perhaps Listerine's coolest feature is the ability to direct-message everyone on a list. This works great if you want to invite your local list to an event, or DM your team at work.
Five years ago today, a new web browser arrived on the scene. Yes, it was Firefox 1.0. At the half-decade mark, Firefox has become a force to be reckoned with. Nearly one in four people on the Internet is now using Firefox - and that includes the entire population of Antarctica!

If Firefox users were a country, they'd be the third most populous in the world - behind only China and India - at 330 million people! 2009 has certainly been a big year for the Fox.

Mozilla's add-on site reports 4.3 million registered users using nearly 164 million add-ons. That's a lot of people using a lot of add-ons. If you're a new Firefox user, you might be having trouble deciding which are worth installing.

Since this is Firefox's fifth birthday, here are five add-ons that can make browsing better for just about anyone!
Continue reading Five essential addons for new Firefox users (Happy fifth birthday, Firefox!)

Five essential addons for new Firefox users (Happy fifth birthday, Firefox!) originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 13:00:00 EST. Now that the new Lists feature has rolled out to everyone and become a big part of Twitter, the microblogging service has taken the logical next step and launched list widgets. That means you can embed a live version of your favorite Twitter list anywhere on the web. It doesn't even have to be your list, actually: if someone else has a favorite that you enjoy, you can make a widget of that, too.

Like the List-to-RSS solution I wrote about recently, list widgets allow you to follow a list without following everyone on it. Widgets also make it very easy to customize the appearance of your lists, as well as a bunch of other options. Live auto-updating is included - or you can set how often it loads new tweets - and you can also control the number of tweets that appear at once. Don't want to show avatars or hashtags? That's fine too, there are some checkboxes that will take care of it. This set of features makes widgets a great way to share your favorite Twitter content outside of Twitter.
If you're loving Twitter's new lists feature, but you're finding yourself a bit overwhelmed by following so many new people, there might be a better way to try out a list. One Twitter user has put together a list-to-RSS script. All you have to do is pop a list's URL into the site and drop the resulting feed URL into your reader. This way, you don't have to check the list on the web, and you don't have follow everyone on it.

Be warned, the list-to-RSS site has run into some rate-limit issues with Twitter's APIs, so you may have to check back periodically if it doesn't work for you on the first try. Meanwhile, if you're still looking for some good lists to subscribe to, may I recommend the Download Squad team list? Sebastian has also collected some great list recommendations and a step-by-step guide to using lists in an earlier Download Squad post.
Subscribe to Twitter's new lists as RSS feeds originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 02 Nov 2009 08:30:00 EST. We've already mentioned other ways to power up Google Chrome. Before extensions arrived on the developer channel, Userscripts and bookmarklets were your only options. Both are still great ways to add some kick-ass functionality to Chrome. If you're running the stable or beta builds, you may want to stick to them for now.

Though Twitter seem to be having some stability issues, at the time of writing, almost every active Twitter user should now have access to the new Lists functionality.

We covered it briefly back when the beta started, but here's a quick guide on how to make them -- and how to get the most out of them, because really... this might be exactly the change we social media addicts have all been waiting for.

It's really quite easy. In three steps:

1. Visit the Twitter homepage. If you see the Lists box (as seen at the top of this entry), then you're good to go -- if it's not there, you'll have to wait until you're included in the testing, which should be really soon now.

2. Type in the name of someone that matches the list you're creating. Why this doesn't auto-complete using some kind of funky AJAX I do not know...

3. Finally, hit that new button that you've probably not seen before, and add them to a list!

And now you're done adding the first person to your first list! What now? Well... you can either make your own list of awesome people (or boring people to avoid?) -- or you can go and use the lists that other people have made!

Here are some good Twitter Lists to get started with -- I'll try to cater for everyone:

The Twitter Team -- good for up-to-the-minute news from the developer team itself. They can be quite funny too, from time to time...

Baseball Writers -- The Huffington Post have compiled this great list of sports-tweeters. Worth following if you're into baseball!

The Huffington Post also have an Iran list, a Democratic Rep. list, a Republican Rep. list... (you can view all their lists here.)

Musicians and Labels -- This one has a comprehensive collection of every record company and music magazine, and some bands/artists too.

And of course, we have a list of Download Squad's writers too!

If you have some great, comprehensive lists, please let me know, and I'll get them added -- there doesn't seem to be a List directory or search yet!

Update -- masterful fellow DownloadSquad blogger Lee has just discovered a Twitter Lists site called Listorious. It's really rather good.

The number of gadgets for Windows 7, both made by Microsoft and third-party developers, has skyrocketed. Only a few months ago there was little choice and almost nothing worth calling home about -- but today, you're spoilt for choice! What you have here are a bunch of the most useful (or interesting) gadgets usable with your shiny-new OS, Windows 7.

Note: If you're going to be installing third-party gadgets, you'll be faced with a confirmation dialogue before they can install:

Just hit 'Install'! With that out of the way, on with the show!
I hate feature-creep. If I want to know the current weather -- then show me the damn weather.

Weather Bug lets you select a nearby weather station and shows you everything you might need to know: current temperature (Celsius or Fahrenheit), forecasted high and low, wind speed, and the current cloudiness (or lack of).

There's also a link for extended website-based information, and even a webcam stream if your weather station has one!

Keep track of every major football (soccer) league in Europe, from Italian to English to even the Champion's League.

The greatest thing about this gadget is you can even pull up the recent results and upcoming matches in a given league, or for your favourite/most hated team.

There's an option in the settings to show even more leagues, so I assume it will be be kept updated -- perhaps to show the World Cup when that finally ticks around next summer?

Unfortunately its default setting is to tweet some birdsong annoyingly every time someone twits, but it's easy to turn off. As you can see in the screenshot, links are replaced with [link], and you can mouse-over them to see where they link to -- it even expands the link-shortening services, so you can actually see where you're going!

And it doesn't seem to steal away all of your CPU cycles like Tweetdeck does...

Not only can you see pending friend requests or event invitations but you can also see if you've been poked -- life-altering, I know! All of your friend's updates are here too, with a break-out box popping-up to give you more details if you click on an update.

You can't seem to comment on or 'like' anything though -- perhaps that will come at a later date? Or maybe this gadget has been designed with the idea of improving your productivity at work...? So there is a God...

Either way, confining Facebook to a gadget would seem like a sensible thing to do. I imagine most of us know what it feels like to be sucked into the Facebook Void, sometimes never to resurface.

Some gadget niches are missing; most notably: an RSS reader! There are still relatively few gadgets compared to other computer customisations and, perhaps surprisingly, there are no decent RSS readers as a result.

The only good one seems to be Google's own gadget which only works with Google Desktop. If someone out there wants to design an RSS feed-reading gadget that can log into Google Reader... you'd be a very popular man.

The best I can offer you is a system-tray notifier called GRaiN that was featured over on Lifehacker in July. Or, if you want to subscribe to a few individual feeds, the Hermes RSS reader gadget might satisfy you.

I've also not mentioned the thousands of system-diagnostic gadgets, or the Google Search gadgets -- I figured I would try and show you some new gadgets that you might not have seen before!

Twitter's new Lists feature has rolled out in beta to a large number of users, and it adds a lot to the Twitter experience without detracting too much from the site's simplicity. You can create, view and manage lists of users from the Twitter.com sidebar, and add users by going to your "following" page. Once you've got a list created, clicking on it will show you a timeline of tweets from the users you've added.

If you make a list public, you can send a link to others to share it, and they can add everyone on your list in one fell swoop. You can also see which lists you've been added to by clicking on a link located at the top of the sidebar next to your following/followers numbers. This bumps the link to your timeline, showing your total number of tweets, out of the way to a small-print link under your username. Of course, it's also possible to make private lists, in case you want to group people into categories without offending anybody.
Twitter Lists feature hits beta, makes Twitter a lot better originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 15 Oct 2009 20:30:00 EST. Google loving apologist geeks everywhere are heralding the 85 million new customers -- who are obviously ready to try Android, if only Verizon would let them -- as the beginning of a new era in mobile phone competition. The cries of panacea are all I've heard all day:

"It's going to be a floodgate of new users! "

"Death to the iPhone!"

And, as one particularly difficult to satisfy commenter on another blog wrote:

"Get over yourselves apple and make a new product."

I'll have to admit, as a current G2, and previous G1 owner, I was a little excited myself. Then I read one thing from the joint Verizon/Google press call which made me crestfallen.

"Verizon also has no plans to make any changes to the Android Market."

And with that, all my dreams of an Android controlled world ran away like so much sand through my fingers. This is an enormous mistake, Verizon. Care to know why? The Android Market is terrible. It's worse than terrible, it's horrible.

Horrible, and just a little bit dangerous.

I've got a list of five things Verizon must do to the Android Market if they're to have any hope of even modest success.

Continue reading Preemptive FAIL : Five easy things Verizon isn't doing to fix Android

Preemptive FAIL : Five easy things Verizon isn't doing to fix Android originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 06 Oct 2009 21:00:00 EST. Twitter's been working on a lot of new features lately, from geolocation to Project Retweet, and the latest new toy to enter limited testing is Lists. Pretty soon, you'll be able to make a list of Twitter accounts so that others can follow them all with one click. We've seen some well-known Twitter users - I'm not naming any names, but it rhymes with Scobbert Roble - vehemently bash the Suggested User List that Twitter invites new accounts to follow, so an alternate way to find interesting groups of users is definitely a positive development.'

Lists is a new Twitter API that third-party apps will be able to use, so we might see some of the early attempts at Twitter groups, like WeFollow, fall by the wayside. No matter, though: a huge database of user-generated lists will offer more specific categories of people to follow, and hopefully turn into less of a popularity contest. On the other hand, Lists could make it faster for all those Twitter spambots to follow the maximum number of accounts.
Twitter starts testing Lists, makes mass following easier originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 01 Oct 2009 09:00:00 EST. It's Thanksgiving day for those of you in the United States, time to reflect upon the things for which you're truly thankful. While I'm sure there are many more noble things to list, this is Downloadsquad, after all, and what would be more fitting than a list of programs I appreciate?

16. Cabos. I rarely use a Gnutella client any more. When there is the odd song stuck in my head that necessitates a one-off download, Cabos is what I use. It's got a clean, simple interface, and it works - and that's really all I'm after.

15. Flash Player. Damn you, Adobe. Now that v10 has taken care of some of the CPU and memory issues, it's hard to begrudge Flash. There are just way, way too many addictive little games and excellent web applications that have been built using it.

14. FastCopy. My boss also runs a DJ business, and transferring his multi-hundred gig library from drive to drive was starting to drive me insane. After stupidly giving Windows a crack at the job once, I quickly hunted down a better tool for the job. FastCopy with the buffer cranked up made (relatively) short work of the task.

13. Find and Run Robot. It's not quite a flashy as the more popular Launchy, but it's much lighter on resources and gets the job done just as well. There are also tons of great extensions for it. For those who swear by the power of the keyboard, FARR is a must have.
Continue reading 16 (or so) apps I'm thankful for

16 (or so) apps I'm thankful for originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 27 Nov 2008 11:00:00 EST.
Jay recently reviewed MiniTask, an ultra- simple to-do list application built on the Adobe Air platform. If you're like me and would prefer to avoid installing yet another oversized Adobe product on your Windows PC, take a look at To-Do Desklist.

Like MiniTask, you can add an alarm to an item and hotkeys are supported for adding new tasks and showing your to-do items. Desklist also allows you to assign priority and add extended notes to tasks.

Alerts can be displayed in any corner of your screen, and they're fully skinnable. The program comes with light, dark, and sky themes built in, but you're free to set your own background color or image and change the display font. You can also tweak opacity settings for the alerts.

The full task window allows you to filter items by priority. When your list gets lengthy, it's a helpful way to make sure you're focusing on critical tasks.

I'd like to have option to hide alerts (like MiniTask) or collapse task items, but for simple lists, Desklist is still a good option. It's freeware for Windows only.
To-Do Desklist is a simple, free GTD app with nice visuals originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST.
Need to put together a quick list or data table, but can't be bothered with the bloat of a full spreadsheet application?

List² is a minimalist (32kb) application that can do just that. Its uncomplicated interface allows you to quickly assign names to columns and start entering your data.

What can List² do with such a small footprint? Import and export tabbed data files, import CSV, export to HTML, and perform simple search and replace operations. Columns and rows can be moved around and inserted with ease, and List² even supports column sorting.

Though the .zip download contains a .reg file, I was able to extract only the executable itself and run it on my MSI Wind with no trouble at all. With it on my flash drive I've got a tiny, incredibly simple way to maintain lists on the go - regardless of who's computer I'm using.

I've been using Excel for jobs like this for ages, which just doesn't make any sense. List² is much lighter, and does everything I need it to do. It's freeware, Windows only.
Simple text spreadsheets with Listē originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 06 Oct 2008 10:00:00 EST. Because Blist is easier to demonstrate than it is to explain, you can now try Blist without an account. You can play with all the features, browser other people's Blists and even make your own -- you just can't save it.

At the same time, they've introduced social features, similar to the ones you're familiar with from places like Digg and Google Reader. You can add contacts and share Blists with others via your contact list. Previously, you could only share via email (that feature is still available.) We love to see intelligent uses of social features like Blist's. It looks like they've added something that people will actually use, without going overboard with elaborate profiles.

[via Mashable]
Blist adds new document sharing features originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 28 Jun 2008 14:00:00 EST. Nothing feels better than having all of your stuff under control, except maybe having all of your stuff under control in a sexy new system.

So if you've been rocking the same GTD application for too long and feel it's time to mix things up a little, check out this amazing survey of the GTD application landscape at About This Particular Mac.

While it originates at a Mac-centric site, the list should be of interest to any GTD practitioner since many (if not most) of the listed applications are web apps, with the occasional cross-platform app thrown in.

For good measure, here are our favorite GTD apps based on platfrom:

Windows: ClearContext (an Outlook add-in)
Mac: iGTD
Web: Backpack or Remember The Milk
Huge survey of available GTD applications originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 05 Nov 2007 08:00:00 EST. Say you want to create a grocery list with your spouse while you're both at work. Just start writing up your list and let your sweety know when you're out of ideas. They can then login and start crossing out all the chocolate-flavored cereal on your list and replace it with raisin bran.

You can also discover public lists that have been created by other users. Lists can include anything from bookmarks to notes on <strike>Steve Jobs</strike> Steve Ballmer's latest speech. They pack a lot of information into a neat list that's easy to comb for exactly what you need. As WordPress keeps gaining momentum and popularity, more and more bloggers are posting lists of their favorite plugins that help them stay on top of their game. Instead of posting a top X list, however, DLS reader Staska decided to aggregate. By using the power of community and this list of top WordPress plugin posts from bloggers around the world, Staska created a Top 30 WordPress Plugins list by tallying each plugin's mention from all those bloggers.

That's a lot of lists, and a lot of aggregating.

The result is a great success, with a strong list that should have something for everyone, and commentary from Staska on the wide array of WordPress plugins that keep the blogosphere runing.

Post by David Chartier
The top 30 WordPress Plugins list made by you originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 28 Mar 2007 13:00:00 EST. While many other task management applications have found ways to incorporate the ideas put forth by the Getting Things Done methodology that David Allen developed, it seems that very few have been built from the ground up as GTD applications. There are certainly a few web applications that can make that claim, but in terms of "offline" applications, the pickings are pretty slim.

One such application, however, is ThinkingRock. Written in Java, ThinkingRock boasts versions for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

In ThinkingRock, you work in specific modes that relate to the various levels of the GTD workflow. For example, rather than entering a task and setting the project it relates to and the context at that moment, you can simply use a collection view to do a brain dump of all of the tasks and ideas that are bouncing around in your mind.
Continue reading ThinkingRock - cross-platform GTD application

ThinkingRock - cross-platform GTD application originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 18 Mar 2007 08:00:00 EST.
