Adium isn't the only instant messaging app powered by libpurple which has seen a healthy spate of updates recently. Pidgin -- the cross-platform multi-network massaging app -- has been updated twice in the past fortnight, squashing numerous bugs and tweaking its interface.
Among the lengthy changelogs for Pidgin 2.7.4 and 2.7.5 you'll find support from Chrome and Chromium on non-Windows ...

After a rather epic and pregnant pause, the developers of Adium have finally squeezed out the next major version release of the best open-source Mac chat client in town: Adium 1.4.
The main feature additions are Twitter and IRC support, but the contact list has also been overhauled to support contacts in multiple groups and instant searching. There's also a new version of libpurple under the ...

Microsoft Messenger for Mac, Microsoft's instant messaging application for Apple-made computers has hit version 8, finished its beta testing, and is now ready to download and use. Microsoft Messenger for Mac 8 will be included in the upcoming Office for Mac 2011 suite as well.
Messenger for Mac has all the features you'd expect -- it lets you instant message, audio and video call your friends ...

I always had one rather large complaint about Fring and other multi-network messengers: they're dog-ugly -- like, Ugliest Dog In The World ugly. Fortunately there's a beautiful alternative that, until now, has only been available for iPhone and BlackBerry: it's called BeejiveIM, and after you try it every other messenger app on Android will fade into clumsy and ugly insignificance.
From the ...

Popular IM client Meebo has finally arrived on Blackberry. The app supports both touchscreen devices (like the Storm and Storm 2) and trackball models (like the Curve and Tour).
The app ties in to your Meebo account, giving you in-app access to your buddy list, chat history, and even chats you had open before you stepped away from your desktop and signed in via your mobile. As CNet points out, ...

Today... my Android phone arrived!
Yes, I finally bit the bullet and bought one. I had hoped that someone would send me a review sample of a sexy HTC or something, but alas... cheap bastards... Anyway! This means you'll now be treated to reviews of Android apps. Most of them will be free and available from the Android Marketplace, but I will also occasionally turn my attention to the slightly ...

![Microsoft Live Messenger app for iPhone [EXPOSED]](http://www.blogcdn.com/downloadsquad.switched.com/media/2010/04/live-mess_180x129.jpg)
Where do you find the largest iTunes user base? On Windows. A large number of those users own an iPod touch or iPhone, and a similarly large number still use Live Messenger for chatting... so it really wasn't a surprise when news get around late last year that Microsoft was working on a Live Messenger app for the iPhone.
Now it looks like the app could be arriving soon. NeoWin's Tom Warren has ...

When I first reviewed Trillian for iPhone, it showed promise, but it wasn't quite ready for the bigtime yet. I had a couple of minor issues with the 1.0 release, including a lack of landscape mode and making it too much of a pain to close a chat. Well, Trillian has fixed both of those issues, and much, MUCH more in the new version 1.1.
Trillian now supports Facebook Chat, allows you to stay ...

So, XMPP. Not exactly a household acronym, is it? It stands for Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, more commonly known by its former name, Jabber.
XMPP is an open IM protocol. Anyone who feels like it can roll out their own XMPP server, from enterprise servers for in-house use such as Spark all the way to massive public servers like Google Talk.
And now Facebook have joined the XMPP ...

Miranda IM, the infinitely customizable IM client, has now added built-in Facebook chat. This means it now features out-of-the-box support for MSN, AIM, ICQ, Google Chat, Facebook, and probably a few other protocols I've never even heard of.
Miranda also lets you add many other obscure protocols (Gadu-gadu, anyone?), and can be customized in numerous ways through its plug-in system. Not only ...

Trillian has enjoyed a nice, long run as one of the most popular multi-protocol IM clients for Windows. It's not just surviving, though, it's thriving and expanding to new platforms. I tested out the very nice iPhone version recently, and now there's finally Trillian for Mac! It's not perfect, but keep in mind that it's still in alpha, so I expect a lot of feature additions and improvements in ...

Hey, remember ICQ?
The chat network that once seemed to dominate the international market has seen much better days. The new ICQ 7 arrives almost exactly three years after ICQ 6 first hit beta, but the whole landscape has changed in that time.
What's this "social networking integration" all the kids are doing these days? ICQ tried to figure that out with ICQ 7, including support for Twitter ...

There are plenty of competing chat apps for iPhone and Android, but BlackBerry users have, thus far, been left out in the cold in terms of multi-service chat clients. Nimbuzz is stepping in to plug that hole, though, with a BlackBerry-native app that allows you to chat over AIM, Gtalk, MSN, Skype, Facebook and more.
Being a native app means Nimbuzz can run in the background and take advantage ...

digg_url = 'http://downloadsquad.switched.com/2009/11/30/the-ultimate-list-of-google-wave-robots/'; This list has been a long time coming, and for that I apologise. But I think it will be worth the wait. In just the last month invites for Google Wave have opened right up with second and third generation testers getting invite codes of their own to distribute. Developers and users are now ...

Trillian, the excellent all-purpose chat app we've loved for years on the PC, just made the leap to the iPhone.
There are a lot of things to love about this pocket-sized version of Trillian, including its great-looking interface and its support for several different chat services. You'll need to sign up for a free Astra account if you don't already have one, but it's nice that Trilian's ...
