Despite the fact that Hotmail has a much larger user base, general consensus seems to be that the Microsoft's webmail service is still playing catch-up with Gmail. With its recent updates, however, Hotmail has improved greatly -- and the improvements keep on coming.
This week's installment is a handful of new security features. Hotmail now allows you to confirm trusted computers from which you ...

The last few months have been busy ones for the Hotmail crew, and they're continuing to push new features to their users. The latest round of upgrades includes enhanced folder options, built-in package tracking, embedded video playback, and a rather significant upgrade to Messenger.
Hotmail users can now chat with their Facebook friends from the comfort of their inbox -- if I had my druthers, ...

Much has been said about Gmail's new priority inbox -- all of it good! -- but it turns out that Microsoft Research has been working on similar technology since the 1990s.
Not only is there a slew of research papers detailing how the technology works (it sounds very similar to Gmail's priority inbox), but Microsoft also has a bunch of well-targeted patents filed as far back as 1999!
Is this ...

Microsoft has finally completed the rollout of Hotmail's biggest update ever, making it available to all 350 million of its users. The new look and features have turned a lot of heads, drawing praise from bloggers and longtime Gmail users alike.
Of course, as with any upgrade there have been snags -- with some customers complaining of their browser freezing when trying to load Hotmail, and ...

As the new Hotmail continues to roll out -- it's now in use by more than 100 million people and headed to all remaining users soon! -- I don't doubt that many of you who hated the old version might want give Hotmail a second look. With loads of new features, improved performance, and no more text promotions in your message footers, Hotmail is now a strong alternative to GMail -- even for seasoned ...

It's a story that beggars belief, a true case of Goliath smothering David with his voluminous backside, but believe it or not... it's true! Get this: a group of ingenious spammers are being sued by Microsoft for abusing Hotmail's Junk Mail Reporting Program and Smart Network Data Services.
The lawsuit claims that the defendants used millions of Hotmail accounts to label spam messages as 'not ...

Less than a month ago, Microsoft's Hotmail went through a well-received reboot, but our own Lee Mathews delivered an epic rant about the taglines in the footers of messages anyway. "FAIL!" he cried! How can we use these email addresses for professional purposes when they're still tacking on ads at the bottoms of our messages? That's so early-90s AOL (yes, we're allowed to do that... )!

I'm a GMail user. I've been a GMail user for years, and I'm not likely to stop using it any time soon. I was, however, excited by all the improvements in Microsoft's latest update to Hotmail. Competition is good, after all -- and a better Hotmail should lead to improvements and innovation in other webmail apps.
When reading about the changes you probably noticed a number of bloggers talking ...

While I'm probably not going to stop using my GMail account any time soon, the new Hotmail refresh has certainly put a shine on the venerable old webmail app and dragged it into 2010. And there are a couple new features that I do find very compelling -- and several others that less-techy users will enjoy.
One of the biggest changes is with file attachments. Hotmail can now handle up to 200 ...

Hotmail remains one of the most popular Web-based email providers around, second only to Yahoo Mail in most countries. In tech circles, however, Hotmail seems to struggle to escape GMail's geek-friendly shadow. That's all about to change though: Microsoft is bringing a slew of features that match and even surpass GMail in some areas.
First, push email support for mobile phones (including iPhone ...

Clearly Google has Microsoft and Yahoo! shaking in their boots right now. While more often than not companies try not to bring attention to what their competitors are working on, fear can drive them to speak out when they might otherwise more wisely hold their tongue.
Google's announcement yesterday of a new social networking feature called Buzz that is integrated into Gmail prompted Yahoo! to ...

Firefox's Awesome Bar is definitely a more powerful tool than it used to be. It's still got room for improvement and tweaking, though - and fortunately there are plenty of nifty add-ons available to do just that.
One worth checking out is Locationbar². You can see one of the add-on's features in my screenshot. Hold down your control, shift, or alt key and directories in the URL become ...

The SEVEN Beta setup is an interesting one.
As a company, Seven (enough capitalising already!) sell their excellent push e-mail products only via mobile operator channels, however their Beta program is an excellent way for users on unsupported carriers (that's likely you and I) to enjoy their software.
Available in a variety of editions on a variety of platforms, Seven's software allows ...

Over 30,000 email addresses have been compromised, with their login info posted online, in the past few days. The BBC has apparently seen the list, and it includes Hotmail, AOL, Yahoo and Gmail users. None of those companies are to blame, though, because the owners of the email addresses got caught in a phishing scam. In case you're not already in the habit of making sure you're not giving your ...

If you're like me, you have at least two email addresses. One of these email addresses is for important business; you hand it out to co-workers, friends, and family, whose emails you actually want to pay regular attention to. The second email address is for other stuff, like signing up for newsletters, shopping online, or creating accounts for services on the web. Also, if you're like me, you ...
