The near-final Release Candidate of Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo is now available to download. The final release is expected in the next week or so.
Moving away from the beta builds, this RC is more of a stability and spit-polish release than anything else. Usability-wise, the release notes point out that there are now 150 add-ons that work with Firefox 4 for Mobile, up from 100 last month ...

Jay Sullivan, Mozilla's vice president of products, has told the IDG News Service at the Mobile World Congress that Firefox 4 for Android will ship in a few weeks. We should expect to see one more beta version this week, and then the final build soon after.
Sullivan also tells IDG about Firefox for Mobile's extensive feature set -- 150 add-ons will be available! -- and Mozilla's overall move to ...

Mozilla's latest beta version of Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo is a lot faster than previous releases, blowing away older versions in speed tests. According to the Mozilla blog, Firefox is now 3x faster than Google's stock Android browser when it comes to JavaScript, even if they did use their own Kraken speed test to prove it. Brad Linder at Mobiputing says the numbers on the SunSpider ...

Firefox 4 Beta 2 for Android became available earlier today, and it promises to bring many improvements over the initial beta. First off, it will use up a lot less space -- a precious commodity for almost all Android smartphones. The second beta should occupy about 17 MB once installed, compared to the first version's whopping 43 MB (which is almost a third of the entire app space most Android ...

Just yesterday Mozilla released the first beta of Firefox 4 (Fennec) for Android and Maemo. We've reported on various versions of Firefox for Mobile, but this build is something else entirely -- this is actually Firefox 4, with the Fennec UI strapped on top.
Externally, from an end-user point of view, this is business as usual: Mozilla has been trying to produce a working version of Fennec for ...

Firefox 4 Beta 1 is out for Android and Maemo devices today, and it's the richest mobile version of Firefox yet. In contrast to buggy, borderline-unusable Alpha versions you may have tried, the beta packs more features and a bit more stability.
Firefox Sync, Add-Ons and the Awesome Bar are all included, offering an experience that will be familiar to anyone who uses Firefox on the desktop. Some ...

If you're trying to work out bugs in a new application, automatic crash reports can be extremely helpful. It's the kind of thing that could really come in handy if you were trying to polish off a mobile version of a web browser, for example. Not suprisingly, the team at Mozilla feels the same way.
In the latest nightly builds of Firefox for Android, crash reporting has been turned on. The ...

(Can you tell that I'm trying to spice things up around here?)
We've actually been discussing how to 'sass-up' Firefox Friday Five. Interviews with Mozilla developers? Add-on creators? Perhaps we could even get a perspective from competitors -- how does Microsoft intend to combat Firefox? With Chrome and Firefox both being open source and effectively having a shared code base, can either one of ...

Happy Friday everyone!
I suppose it's to be expected, after a flurry of activity from the Mozilla HQ over the last few weeks, that things would calm down a little. There wasn't much Firefox news this week I'm afraid, but I've done my best to scrape together five fairly-interesting tidbits.
Let's start with a neat tip:
1. Overriding the add-on compatibility/version check
Most of you ...

By now you should know what this column is all about: Firefox. Everything Firefox. Some of this will be new, some of it old, but generally all of it will be pretty neat if you're a Firefox user. Let's get stuck in!
1. You can undo closed tabs in Firefox
You know what Ctrl-T does, right? It opens a new tab. How about Ctrl-Tab? It cycles through your tabs! Now... what happens if you throw ...

Good news, Nokia users! if you're fortunate enough to own one of those swish Maemo-powered smartphones: Firefox for Mobile has hit 1.0! The beta releases have been picking up pace, and now with the release candidate (RC) and a beautiful logo, Mozilla means business with Firefox for Mobile!
Unfortunately this is just for Maemo-based devices, a distribution of Linux based on Debian. Right now ...
