2010 has been one heck of a year for software development. We've seen scores of great new apps released and major updates for many of our favorites. "Release early, iterate often" has become the norm -- with alpha and beta downloads coming at us fast and 0.1 becoming the new 1.0.
The speed of change with some apps has been mind-boggling at times. Can you believe that Google Chrome's stable ...

Santa's just hand-delivered you a brand-spanking new iPhone or iPod touch. You've ripped the wrapping paper off, charged it, and have been playing with it non-stop, but your home screen looks a bit bare. Well look no further: DLS has your back! Dropbox has been around for so long and become so indispensable for so many people, that it's tough to remember that the spry little utility has been in beta all along. Not any longer -- the Dropbox team has announced that their baby has officially left the nursery, and version 1.0.10 is available for download right now. You may actually have to go to the site to get it -- Dropbox has never been ...

I've got a serious text editor fetish, and as such, it extends across devices. I've been on the lookout for a simple text editor for Android for a while now. There's complex software, with tagging support, SimpleNote sync and lots of other bells and whistles, and at the other end of the range there are really simple editors with no sync functionality at all.
And then I found Epistle. I've just ...

It's no secret that Notational Velocity is my favorite Mac note-taking application. It synchronizes with the SimpleNote online service, which means you can access your notes on your Mac, iPhone, online, and, if you store your notes in a folder that is in your Dropbox account, on a plethora of iOS plain text editing applications. It's made for speed, letting you find what you need instantly, make ...

Dropbox, with a bunch of minor bug fixes, has now been bumped from version 0.8 to 1.0 and garnered the exciting 'RC' tag. This means the developers think that Dropbox is ready for prime time -- though given its massive publicity drive, and a huge numbers of users, I think this is more of an 'exhibition release' than anything else.
Due to a bug in the upgrade process, Linux and Mac OS X users ...

Well, not just for tweeting... But Dropbox will boost your free account by a full 512MB if you're feeling social. Head on over to www.dropbox.com/free, sign in to your account, and you'll be given four tasks to complete. Each one is worth an additional 128MB and they're all pretty painless:

The Bluefire e-reader for iPhone made a big splash last week because it's a free app that can read DRM-protected e-books, like the ones offered by many public libraries. We've reviewed Bluefire and shown you how to get borrowed e-books onto your iPhone, but there are two better and faster ways to accomplish this, without opening Adobe Digital Editions on your computer or syncing with iTunes. ...

When I reviewed SugarSync for Android in September, I came away with one resounding conclusion: it's better than Dropbox. The Android experience is better, and the Web experience is better. There was just one niggle: the free version of SugarSync was feature-crippled. Earlier today, however, SugarSync lifted the crippling restrictions from its free version and bumped the storage up to 5 GB.

Dropbox is an extremely handy service, and it's made even more handy by all the developers who create useful new ways to interact with our Dropbox storage. A while back, Jay wrote about AirDropper -- which allows other people to email files right to your Dropbox.
Today, I discovered DropItToMe. Like AirDropper it allows other people to add files to your Dropbox. DropItToMe, however, works via ...

GrabBox is a handy new Dropbox-powered screenshot tool for OS X. It uses the normal OS X screenshot hotkeys (Apple+Shift+3 and Apple+Shift+4), but the resulting screenshots wind up in your Dropbox public folder. It also automatically shortens the Dropbox URL of your new screenshot and copies it to the clipboard.
Think about that for a second: in one fell swoop, you've captured and uploaded a ...

Ever since it was first announced, Ubuntu One has drawn comparisons to Dropbox. With cross-platform desktop apps and mobile versions for iOS, Android, and Blackberry, Dropbox has a bit of an edge. A Ubuntu One Windows app has been talked about for quite some time, and the Wiki now states that a beta version is coming soon -- which should help close the gap.
There's also the ...

Like every modern mobile device, the iPad is only as good as the apps you have running on it. Sure, Apple's entry into the tablet market comes packing a decent Web browser, mail client, and photo viewer, but with apps at your side, the iPad can be transformed from an expensive couch-browser into a truly useful tool. So, for those of you who've just bagged yourself a shiny new iPad, or if you're ...
