Back in July I posted about the Google Desktop Gadget Designer and a contest sponsored by Google for makers of gadgets, a.k.a. widgets. Yesterday, at long last, Google announced the contest's winners. The supreme ultimate winners, who will take home $5,000, are Marius and Yannick Stucki, who created diGGGadget, which is of course for keeping track of Digg. Second place went to Turhan Aydin for ...

VMware has announced the winners of its Ultimate Virtual Appliance Challenge, a contest which challenged teams to build preconfigured open source virtual machine images for VMware. I posted earlier this month about some of the very cool "Virtual Appliances" available at the VMware web site, and VMware's chosen winners are impressive indeed. The first prize winner is HowNetWorks, "a network ...

Apple gets a lot of accolades for its user interface design, and even Microsoft is turning some heads with Vista and Office 2007, but they should both be paying attention to the OS Eric Patterson made. Unfortunately for us, Eric Patterson's OS isn't real: It's just a mock-up of what he thinks Mac OS 10.5 Leopard should look like, and it's cool enough to have won Phill Ryu's Fake Leopard Screenshot ...

Awhile back we mentioned Firefox Flicks, a competition sponsored by Mozilla to create a promotional
video for the maverick web browser. On Tuesday they started rolling out the first videos with six online today and a couple added each day.. I
really enjoyed "Wheee!", though I think some
Safari users might take offense. If you haven't submitted your Firefox Flick yet, you'd better get ...

I am both delighted and alarmed by the winners of Engadget's birthday cake
contest. In case you hadn't heard, Engadget has been celebrating its 2nd birthday and ran a contest for the prize
was a really sweet Alienware PC. The challenge was to bake the coolest gadget-themed birthday cake. I knew they'd get a
lot of entries, but I had no idea the lengths Engadget's crazy readers would go to. I don't ...
