According to Mark Shuttleworth, Ubuntu 10.10 will be called Maverick Meerkat. I think it's a pretty neat name; I like meerkats.
Other than a neat name, 10.10 will continue pushing for faster boot times and faster overall speed. Also, the new "light" theme will be even more pronounced. That's what Shuttleworth says, at least. Ubuntu isn't known for refreshing the UI very often, but maybe ...

With the final release of Ubuntu 10.04 due in just under a month, things appear to be right on schedule at Canonical. Yesterday the Lucid beta download page went live and eager testers rapidly descended upon the mirrors.
Watching Lucid evolve has been exciting. It's clear that Canonical is intent on creating a version of Ubuntu which can appeal to a broader base of computer users with a more ...

Among the other improvements, tweaks, and retoolings headed to Ubuntu 10.04, the Ubiquity installer slideshow appears set for an update.
Ubuntu contributor Dylan McCall has posted preview images of the new screens which could be coming soon to the OS's Ubiquity installer. Interestingly enough they're cast in the soft browns of Lucid's first alpha releases -- and not the Mac-esque color schemes ...

For there to be any chance of "the year of Linux on the desktop" ever becoming a reality, certain things have to happen. One of those things (like it or not) is for a major distribution to support the most popular portable media players on the planet -- the iPhone and iPod Touch.
And it looks as though Canonical has stepped up to the plate. According to reports at Ubuntuforums, Lucid Lynx ...

Over at Popey.com there are a whole slew of new screenshots of the upcoming Ubuntu One Music Store, which will eventually appear in Ubuntu10.04 Lucid Lynx.
It was widely reported that Amazon would provide the backend for the Music Store, but it now looks as though 7Digital will be handling things instead. I'm not surprised, as 7Digital is actually available in more countries. Amazon has, for ...

How to convince a Mac OS X or Windows user to try GNU/Linux? Installing the desired distribution in a Virtual Machine? Read them all those FAQs about partitioning your hard drive for a dual-boot system? No, no - there's an easier way: live CDs or DVDs! Almost every distribution (like Ubuntu, Knoppix or Fedora) are capable of booting into a fully functional desktop right from a burned disc. Simply ...

To say Ubuntu has a dedicated fanbase is probably a bit of an understatement. As the most widely-recognized Linux distribution, Ubuntu has helped push Linux beyond the fringe of desktop computer use.
But because it's Linux -- and because Linux and open source are intertwined so tightly in the minds of many -- things get a little dicey when there's mention of closed source software being ...

There's a change in leadership coming at Canonical soon. Sort of. CEO Mark Shuttleworth has been the driving force at the company behind the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution since day one. Today he announced plans to step down as CEO early next year. But he's staying involved in the company and the person who is taking over has been involved in Canonical almost as long as Shuttleworth.
On ...

Ubuntu certainly has its fans - perhaps more than any other Linux distro. One person you can rest assured isn't part of that group: EEEUbuntu developer Andrew Wyatt. In case you aren't familiar with the project, EEEUbuntu is a customized Linux distro tailored to Asus' line of netbooks.
It was a SourceForge community choice award winner this year - for best new project. Now, however, it looks ...

Canonical has decided -- in response to user requests -- to give paid users of its Ubuntu One online sync and storage tool a big, fat boost in drive space. One recently made its way into Karmic Koala -- which has just reached beta. When beta testing began in May, it looked as though free accounts would get 2GB (the same as Dropbox) and premium users would receive 10GB. That may have been a tough ...

The Beta release of Canonical's new baby, Ubuntu 9.10 'Karmic Koala', is now available for download.
As well as the usual host of version updates to each of the components (including Firefox finally getting an official update to 3.5), changes in 9.10 include a visual refresh, a boot sequence improved in both appearance and performance, inclusion of the new 'Ubuntu Software Center' (which ...

As the Moblin Project continues forging ahead with their sleek, fast-booting Linux remix for netbooks the gang at Canonical continues to keep pace. There's a new GUI for the Ubuntu Netbook Remix which premiered over the weekend. While it's not yet on public display at the UNR web page, there are plenty of images of the restyled interface over at Ubuntu Mini. It's much less cluttered than the ...

Sure, Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope will be out in a few months and Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex has been available since October. But the folks at Canonical are still supporting Ubuntu 8.04 because it's what's considered a Long Term Support (LTS) release. And they've just pushed out the second major update: Ubuntu 8.04.2. The latest version won't have all of the new features that show up in Ubuntu ...

Canonical has made the Mobile Internet Device (MID) version of Ubuntu available to developers. Developers can now make the necessary changes to their desktop applications to better match the smaller screen sizes and processing power of these devices as well as take advantage of the touchscreen interface to improve the user experience. Ubuntu MID is based on the desktop version of the Ubuntu ...

At any given time on the planet, there's a technology trade show in progress. Some are more significant than others, and there's no formula to figure if any given one will be worth the airfare. We're guessing that a few ultraportable laptop manufacturers, as well as a few of us (cough) normal folk, are a little intrigued with the news emerging from the Computex exhibit halls today. Canonical let ...
