With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it's inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first "official" wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.
As you can see, it's got a similar feel to the good ol' Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of ...

Your operating system can run processes in the background -- things like realtime antivirus protection and streaming movies and music around your home -- and so can Google Chrome. Background apps have existed in Chrome and Chromium for some time, but now that the Chrome Web Store is open and its apps are available for installation, Google has posted a blog about why backgrounding is cool.

As is usually the case with new Android SDK releases, various bits and pieces have been ripped out and shared with the world thanks to an enthusiastic and ambitious dev community. Over at the Android Central forums, Alex Dobie has shared nine new wallpaper images which are bundled in the tablet-friendly Android 3.0 Honeycomb SDK.
The images are fairly high-res, too, at 1980x1408 pixels -- so ...

Reeder, one of our must have apps for the iPad, has just received an update for iOS4.2. Finally, iPad users can take advantage of iOS4's multitasking capabilities, with Reeder able to complete its synchronization when running in the background. It's difficult to truly describe how useful this is going to be for users with large RSS lists, as it can take a good while to sync and cache all that ...

Chrome's inability to set an image as desktop wallpaper is a shortcoming I've harped on before. It's a feature that just about every non-power user I know who tries Chrome wishes was there -- but even at version 8 Chrome still can't do some things that Internet Explorer 6 could. A little while back, the Chrome Pig extension arrived -- finally bringing a third-party solution.
Still, it's a bit ...

xoki's about page says: "I am a webpage that displays a blank empty screen, freeing you from the information avalanche. Take a moment to relax. Pick your favorite colors and dream away". While the original text is missing some of the punctuation, this is one About text I'm inclined to agree with.
It's just a blank page. There's no music. There's nothing. It's awash in one shade of color. Move ...

Ages ago (Hello, Windows 98!), changing individual folder backgrounds in Windows was possible using a built-in tool. While the Customize Folder Wizard is long gone, Windows Club has a free, portable download you can use to give your Explorer views a more personal feel.
Download Windows 7 Folder Background Changer, browse for the folder you want to customize (I've pointed it to my Pictures ...

Whether you're an oldie that experienced everything the 70s had to offer, or you're anti-drugs with an itching curiosity to live through an LSD trip, Surreal Territory is the Windows 7 theme for you.
In essence, Surreal Territory is just a bunch of pretty landscapes with the colors of the rainbow fantastically splashed across them. There are also some, er, 'magical lines'. You know... those ...

Remember DreamScene? You might not, since it was a Vista Ultimate Extra and not a whole heck of a lot of people ponied up for the Grand Poobah edition of that particular Windows.
DreamScene enabled you to set a video file as your wallpaper -- which is cool, though I found it terribly distracting. A bit too much like trying to work atop a YTMND page for my liking, though maybe I was choosing ...

Okay, so maybe Hot Spot Studio is not the best name for an application creating colorful backgrounds using virtual "spotlights". It's kind of a bad name, really -- almost a misnomer, because "hot spots" used to refer to the areas in an image which could be clicked on to generate different actions. This is ancient web technology, but that was the name, and that's the first thing that came to mind ...

The Windows 7 Personalization Gallery is packed with good looking themes, and there's something for everyone -- from dog and cat lovers to high-end auto enthusiasts. Today, a stunning new theme has arrived and it's packed with gorgeous images from the Spitzer Space Telescope.
In all, there are 14 images in the theme. Quality might be an issue for some users: at 7MB for the whole pack, each ...

Repper Lite is a really fun tool that lets you create endless tiled backgrounds. It works like a kaleidoscope: you have one "master image" (which you can select from a small, existing catalog, or upload from your own collection), and you have a little frame that you can resize and move around the image.
The frame is the kaleidoscope, and you can select one of three patterns for it. As you ...

Whether you're a novice user or you know your operating system inside-out, chances are good that you like being able to personalize things a little. Changing sound schemes, placing icons on your desktop, changing your wallpaper -- that sort of thing. Unfortunately, that last tweak isn't possible if you're running Windows 7 Starter on a netbook.
At least, it's not possible without a little ...
