Earlier this week, I wanted to see what it feels like to be an American online -- you know, to explore all of those websites only Americans get to play with, like Hulu, Pandora, and Slacker. So I signed up for a high-speed proxy service and started cruising around. What I discovered was actually quite a letdown. It turns out that both Pandora and Slacker have really, really irritating commercials ...

"Tab Candy" has finally come into its own in this most recent iteration of Firefox, Beta 4. The feature is now called "Panorama". Not all of Raskin's envisioned features made it, but it's still pretty dang cool.
Panorama now lets you group tabs and optionally name the groups. You can resize the groups, and when you shrink a group down to its smallest size, it becomes a "pile" and you can zoom ...

Whether creating a whole new site or changing an existing design, you may often want to shuffle things around and test different layouts. Liquid Page is a bookmarklet that lets you do just that, on any website, right from your browser.
It's as simple as it sounds: you click the bookmarklet, wait about half a second while jQuery loads, click a couple of prompts, and you're on your way. You can now ...

When you register to Send To Dropbox, it doesn't require your Dropbox username and password. It simply asks permission to hook into Dropbox's API. Once you agree, you get an email address that ends with @sendtodropbox.com. Anything sent to that email address ends up in your Dropbox, sorted according to date, subject, or From address.
You can either give this address to people that you trust, or ...

Aza Raskin of Firefox fame has just announced one of the most amazing concepts I have seen for Web browsing in a long time: Tab Candy. Lee covered a slightly out-of date version on Monday, but now it's out for everyone to play with.
It's a completely new concept of tab management: today, it's very easy to have too many tabs. I mean, 12-13 tabs is already "too many". Just try doing three or ...

Let me start this off with a disclaimer: If you feel any sort of aversion towards hipsters, you should probably move on; I don't think you can enjoy Forrst. However, if Tumblr feels like a second home, and you spend your days endlessly gazing at ffffound and sharing snarky comments over at the Shirt.woot forums, you are probably going to love Forrst.
The site has a simple, clear-cut mandate: it's ...

Sculptris is, without question, the coolest thing I have seen all day. What was supposed to be a short spin became an hour of prodding and playing around with every tool of this incredible creation.
In simple terms, it's sculpting software. It's free, and it's accessible. I once ...

Okay, let me get this out of the way first: Pomplamoose are awesome!!! I'm a huge fan, so I was overjoyed when Jack and Nataly agreed to grant me an exclusive 15-minute interview, chock full of nerdy goodness and hard-core technical information on how they create their music.
In case you don't know them, you should really go watch their YouTube channel. They're a musical duo, and they are getting ...

The other day I floated a question over on our Facebook page. I wanted to know where DLS readers get their music recommendations; I was looking for blogs or anything that is not the same old tired Last.fm.
There were lots of good answers (that I will cover as time goes on), and I got a nice surprise in the form of a comment from our cool sister blog, Switched. They pointed me toward one of the ...

It seems like HD is all the rage these days. A friend of mine recently did a month-long market research before putting down a sizable lump of cash for a 47-inch behemoth. And yes, it really is very impressive.
Still, sometimes I find myself wanting to go back to simpler times; back when men were real men, and ASCII animations were all the rage. Why I remember back in the good old BBS and ...

What's the magic sauce that makes something go viral on the internet? Why do some things end up being more viral than others? Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania tackled this question by data-diving into The New York Times list of most emailed articles over a period of six months, August 2008 to February 2009. The tipping point they found was awe - "the emotion of self-transcendence, a ...

I'll admit right of front that I wish this app was free - it's the least Guinness could do after all the beer money I've spent on their lovely tar-black brew over the years. $1.99 isn't a bad price, though -- especially if you want to ensure your iPhone survival app kit contains valuable pint-enjoying tools. Right now, the coolest feature is the Guinness pub locator. In most states, you'll be ...

Sleek, high-end cars have always been a favorite choice for desktop wallpapers. For those of you who happen to be running Windows 7 and love automotive sexiness, you've got to check out the Ferrari prototype themepack from WindowsZone (German).
The pack is available to download from SkyDrive, and includes 5 awesome, high-resolution wallpapers. The theme utilizes the Verizon sound scheme and ...
