Last month, VLC made the jump from desktop to iPad -- and now the app has gone universal. iPhone and iPod touch users can now download the popular player from the App Store.
9to5 Mac has gone hands-on already, and the experience looks very smooth -- at least with their sub-5 minute test videos. We're curious to see how it handles larger files and high-def content.
We'll have our own hands-on ...

Earlier today Nullsoft pushed a beta version of Winamp onto the Android Market -- it's free, and should work on all Android 2.1+ phones. There is also a new desktop version of Winamp that you'll need ('full', not 'lite'!) to make full use of the Android app.
Winamp for Android's key feature -- and indeed, the only real feature that it brings to a very saturated media player market -- is that it ...

Ever since it was first announced, Ubuntu One has drawn comparisons to Dropbox. With cross-platform desktop apps and mobile versions for iOS, Android, and Blackberry, Dropbox has a bit of an edge. A Ubuntu One Windows app has been talked about for quite some time, and the Wiki now states that a beta version is coming soon -- which should help close the gap.
There's also the ...

Canonical's Ubuntu One sync platform has developed nicely since its initial release, and while I'm waiting for the arrival of a Windows client to get really excited about it, the new Ubuntu One Music App for Android is a nice addition.
Now in beta testing, the Music App allows you to (brace yourself!) stream music which you've previously stashed in your Ubuntu One storage. Right now, there are ...

Dropbox has received a lot of attention recently, mostly thanks to the rampant 'OMG 250MB referral!!' scheme that they've been successfully leveraging over the last couple of months. The thing is, just like Apple, Dropbox might be receiving the most press, but that doesn't mean it's better than the competition -- and there's a lot of competition!
Enter SugarSync, a Dropbox competitor with a lot ...

If you're an iPhone user and aren't a big fan of the Google Voice mobile web interface, you won't have long to wait for an official app.
TechCrunch is reporting that the app has already been approved and it's only a matter of time before it goes live in the App Store. We'll be keeping our eyes peeled for it and will update this post once Google Voice becomes available.
There's really no ...

As we continue hurtling headlong into the Golden Age of App Stores, a job posting from Microsoft hints that there's at least one more around the corner. Yes, Office 15 (probably due in 2013) could very well be getting a dedicated app store.
It all starts with a job posting from Microsoft, which states that it's looking for a marketer to head up its Office Managed group. Nestled in among the ...

Note: Dropbox for BlackBerry was released today -- and an updated version for iOS was also released. This is a review for the Android version, but I believe all three are functionally very similar.
Using Dropbox on a mobile device is an odd amalgam of emerging technologies. On the one hand you have the cloud --and everyone loves the flexibility that the cloud brings -- but on the other, when ...

Popular IM client Meebo has finally arrived on Blackberry. The app supports both touchscreen devices (like the Storm and Storm 2) and trackball models (like the Curve and Tour).
The app ties in to your Meebo account, giving you in-app access to your buddy list, chat history, and even chats you had open before you stepped away from your desktop and signed in via your mobile. As CNet points out, ...

Firefox Home has become one of my most-used iPhone apps, and the recent update has added a greatly-improved search function. Previously, FF Home could search your synced content. Now, however, it will actually search Google if no matches are found (check the official demo video after the fold to see it in action).
Another welcome addition is support for private servers -- you're no longer ...

It's been almost a month since Google gave us a good, hard look at the Chrome Web Store and Google Chrome's dev channel build has supported apps be default since early August.
For the last few days, I've been hearing reports from a number of people about 500 errors when trying to reach the Chrome Extensions Gallery. The Gallery, you might recall, is due to be re-launched as the Web Store -- at ...

This morning, I had the pleasure of chatting to a charming British expatriate currently living in Israel. We started with Skype but quickly moved to Rounds' new Facebook video chat app. It took all of 60 seconds to be won over by Rounds and the cute, intimate conversations that it catalyses. In a single sentence, Rounds is video chat with a bunch of buttons that you can push to make things more ...

Unlike iPhone and iPod touch users I know, BlackBerry owners tend to be plenty happy with the built-in array of apps RIM ships on their smartphones. That's probably a good thing, because BlackBerry App World had some fairly big shortcomings when compared to the App Store.
RIM hopes the release of App World 2.0 brings the experience more in line with competitors -- and at first glance, I'd say ...

First up, let me congratulate you on buying an Android smartphone instead of an iPhone. You've just saved a few hundred dollars that could be better spent on beer, bitches/blokes and books. And if you have a little money left after that, you could buy a few Android apps too!
Having said that, most of the apps in this list are free with the option to pay some money if you want bonus features or ...

What kind of sexy demo apps does your new mobile platform need if you want it to make some noise? Apps which resonate with people who you really, really want using your phones. Executive types, perhaps -- the kind of people with some business clout. People who... enjoy a good round of golf during their downtime? Sure, why not.
Long Zheng has shared loads of images of a conceptual Windows Phone ...
