Skype has announced a new change to its desktop app, but this particular feature addition isn't about functionality, it's about monetization. Yes, advertisements are coming to Skype. On the upside, they'll only appear on the Skype Home tab -- so they won't get in the way of your actual chat sessions.
The blog post also states that only the U.S., U.K., and Germany will be seeing ads ...

Can't stop gushing about your favorite new gadget or your latest album purchase? If you're posting about it on Facebook, there's a chance your words could wind up used by advertisers without your knowledge. Facebook has begun allowing companies to re-post endorsements from users as "Sponsored Stories," and there's no way for you to opt out at the moment.
It's not all bad, though. Sponsored ...

We told you it was coming soon, but we didn't know precisely how soon: Wadlimir Palant has already pushed the first beta version of Adblock Plus for Google Chrome. It was just four days ago that TechCrunch reported that Palant had changed his mind about never releasing a Chrome port -- citing reasons like not wanting to maintain two unrelated projects and the availability of capable alternatives ...

In Ray Ozzie's recent farewell note to his teammates in Redmond, he stressed the importance of looking to the future. "[...]The first step for each of us is to imagine fearlessly; to dream," he said, adding "It's the dawn of a new day – the sun having now arisen on a world of continuous services and connected devices."

Relevant ads can sometimes be useful -- Google's recent hyper-local announcement is one such case. However, there are plenty of users on the Web who aren't all that keen about the behavior-tracking that ad providers employ in order to serve those ads.
And apparently the people behind the ads think the right thing to do is to offer you a way out. The newly-formed Self-Regulatory Program for ...

With the Internet Explorer 9 beta set to launch in just over a week, you'd expect to see Microsoft stepping up their PR efforts. IE9's developer previews and Test Drive demos have been well-received, after all, so we're not surprised to see the first IE9 teasers appear.
Our eagle-eyed friend Long Zheng has spotted a shiny, new banner ad for Internet Explorer 9. The animated ad features the ...

Advertising makes the Internet go round, but it's also become a tremendous problem. Between unsavory malware peddlers injecting their nefarious scripts into unsuspecting sites and misleading software ads tricking people into installing useless registry and driver tools, it's no wonder ad blocking has become so commonplace.
And now McAfee, longtime developers of security-related software, are ...

We've all gotten a good look at the very, very early stages of Chrome OS. While there's been plenty of "meh" going around, truth is that it's really much, much too early to pass judgement. It's going to be about a year until we see something finished, after all, and Google has already said things will change quite a bit by that time.
One feature of Chrome OS that has been praised is its ...

Ah, Evony. Sweet, sweet Evony. Chances are if you've been online for more than a day or two and you dare step outside the sandbox of Gmail or Facebook and into the seedy underbelly of the beast, you'll have seen the Evony ads. Take a good, long look at the advert to the right --> OK. Now what're you thinking? BOOBS? Voyeuristic pleasures of the flesh? 'You know, it looks like she's ...

After putting out two or three (depending on how you count them) ads that left a lot of people scratching their heads, Microsoft is apparently pulling the plug on its ad campaign featuring Jerry Seinfeld. Thought about getting into Google's Print Ad program? They have just made it easier to design effective advertisements through a new piece of software. Google's new piece of ad software will help Google Print Ad advertisers design their own ads for display in newspapers. The process is pretty straightforward, but you must win the ad auction to begin. Advertisers start out by choosing a newspaper ...

We have learned to pay little attention to those banner ads that loom at the top and sides of websites everywhere. But brewing deep in London, England a team of eCommerce junkies are making the giant leap to revive them, giving them the street cred they lost many moons ago. Tailgate has developed an intriguing way to spice up those traditional banner ads that for some were a no-click zone. Their ...
