In August of 2010, Intel announced it was purchasing McAfee for a cool $7.7 billion in cash. The deal had been held up by U.S. and EU regulators ever since, but the transaction has finally been given the all-clear.
The two companies plan to develop security solutions which more tightly integrate hardware and software, a move both claim is imperative in today's rapidly evolving threat ...

There's been plenty of buzz about Microsoft showing off Windows 8 -- if that is, in fact, what the next version is eventually dubbed -- on an ARM device at CES 2011, and a press release from Redmond has made the news official. The upcoming Windows release will support System on a Chip architectures -- including those from ARM, Intel, and AMD.
Windows for ARM is capable of delivering hardware ...

If you've been waiting for the day when you could finally play Angry Birds on your Windows computer, brace yourself: Intel has announced that Rovio's insanely popular trajectory game is now available for purchase from the AppUp Center.
The AppUp version of Angry Birds will run you $9.99, though Rovio is offering a discount right now, so you can get the game for $4.99 if you act quickly. You'll ...

Intel will launch a full HD 1080p streaming video service called "Insider" in the first quarter of 2011. Deals with Warner Bros and CinemaNow have already been arranged, and it's expected that a very broad library of movies will be available at launch -- and if that wasn't exciting enough, Intel's streaming movies will be made available at the same time as Blu-ray and DVD releases!
It's a ...

In an interview with the news service IDG, Intel's vice president of Software and Services says that the company is developing a tool to port iPhone applications to Intel's Atom-powered MeeGo smartphones.
Without getting into too much detail, the processors used by Apple's devices (and almost every phone on the market) are not compatible with Intel's Atom processor. This tool would, in theory, ...

Got an HTC Desire, Nexus One, or Dell Streak burning a hole in your pocket? Wish there was something you could run on it besides Android? Probably not, but for those of you out there who just can't stand running stock anything on your devices, why not take the plunge and install Meego?
Anybody else think that the Dell Streak pictured on the Meego Wiki page could use a serious screen ...

Holy acquisitions, Batman!
While most of the IT guys I know aren't fans of McAfee -- especially after that teensy little definition screwup which resulted in thousands of unwanted desktop support hours -- Intel is obviously a fan. In a press release this morning, the IT behemoth has announced that they're swallowing up McAfee for the princely sum of $7.7 billion dollars.
Whether guys like ...

Speaking at the O'Reilly Velocity conference, Facebook's Tom Cook presented a slide that puts Facebook's rapid user growth into perspective. Actual numbers were carefully omitted, but Data Center Knowledge performed some easy deduction to conclude that the top peak represents 60,000 servers.
The plateau towards the end of 2009 represents 30,000 servers -- so they've installed 30,000 servers ...

Valve's Steam Hardware Survey for May 2010 is in! And it's interesting. The site itself seems to be broken -- check out the '0%' May 2010 figures at the bottom -- but fortunately someone on the Steam forums took some screenshots. Here are the Windows numbers -- and the Mac numbers.
The first thing that jumps out is the average amount of RAM: a lot of Windows Steam users are still stuck with ...

Sometimes, a real-time CPU clock speed monitor is just what you need. Admittedly, it's not often, but when it's only 2 megabytes, and it produces such pretty graphs...
The usual go-to tool for CPU analysis is CPUID's CPU-Z utility -- but if you just want to measure your clock speed, CPU-Z can be a bit overkill. It also doesn't tell you a whole lot, other than the max CPU speed set in your BIOS. ...

Domestic, consumer-grade high-speed optical cables are finally here, folks!
By the end of the year you will begin to see Intel's new Light Peak technology. So that you have some idea of just how fast 10 gigabits per second is, Intel's Light Peak overview leaps straight into layman's analogy: at 10Gb/s, you could transfer a Blu-Ray movie in less than 30 seconds -- that's 1200 megabytes per ...

It's not that I don't understand what Intel is trying to do with AppUp - their angle is pretty clear. There's plenty of potential profit if Intel negotiates distribution deals with OEMs and can get AppUp preinstalled on millions of netbooks.
But what's the big selling point for the consumer?
There are, after all, loads of great sites you can already visit to download freeware and ...

You've probably heard of the recently-settled Intel/AMD anti-trust lawsuit -- most notably, the part of the resolution that involved Intel paying AMD $1.25 billion. But there was a lot more that went into the November 2009 settlement! For example, can you believe that the Intel compiler, the one used to produce a large percentage of all computer programs, intentionally cripples AMD processors?

Late in January of this year I installed Moblin on my MSI Wind U100 netbook. At the time, it wasn't officially supported by the distro and my wireless wouldn't connect, so I ended up removing it. In a little under two months, the team has released alpha 2 which - among other things - includes full-on support for the Wind. The update also includes the 2.26.29-rc7 kernel, XFCE version 4.6, the ...

Windows 7 cannot come fast enough! The New York Times is reporting that Intel has decided against upgrading its 80,000 employees to Windows Vista. An Intel spokesperson told the Times that Vista is being tested and deployed in certain departments, but not company-wide. Although the enterprise push to upgrade to Vista has fallen short of expectations, this is a particularly brutal blow. Intel is ...
