Bots -- like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave -- are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.
Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn't have any luck ...

Back when we had the chance to play with some more mature builds of Chromium OS, one feature we particularly liked was its slick, panelized Google Talk funcationality. It later disappeared, replaced by a Gtalk app in the Chrome Web Store -- but while Google talks about 'the same platform everywhere,' the Gtalk Web app only worked on Chrome and Chromium OS.
What about all us Windows, Mac, ...

Android Honeycomb is getting plenty of time in the spotlight this week, what with all the tablets on display at CES 2011. One feature we're particularly excited about is support for video calling in the Google Talk app -- which T-Mobile has graciously demonstrated and posted to YouTube. Check out the brief video after the break for a sneak peek -- which includes a glimpse of the Talk app's tablet ...

Verbs is a brand new entry into the crowded market of chat clients for iOS devices, but it's got a couple of factors that make it worth considering over alternatives like Meebo, Beejive and Trillian. First and foremost, Verbs is gorgeous. It's got an extremely clean design, with Retina-ready graphics and lots of fantastic details that make it a joy to use. Second, it supports uploading and sharing ...

The Google Talk app for Android is nice enough for text chatting on the go, but it lacks the video support offered by its desktop cousin. That could very well change in Android 2.3, if a recent discovery by Android Guys is an accurate indication of things to come.
Nestled in amongst the files which shipped the Gingerbread SDK are a boatload of icons, including the ones you see above. The video ...

Trillian has enjoyed a nice, long run as one of the most popular multi-protocol IM clients for Windows. It's not just surviving, though, it's thriving and expanding to new platforms. I tested out the very nice iPhone version recently, and now there's finally Trillian for Mac! It's not perfect, but keep in mind that it's still in alpha, so I expect a lot of feature additions and improvements in ...

Facebook Chat has been a bit slow to catch on. Since it's been relegated to being opened from the web in a Facebook Tab, it hasn't been able to compete with chat services that have their own dedicated clients, like AIM, MSN and Yahoo. Although some third-party apps - like Adium - have made the extra effort to support Facebook Chat, it's not widespread. That's about to change, though, when Facebook ...

If you're like me, there may be several contacts that appear in your Google chat that you probably would never dream of emailing again, let alone having a late night chat with. Well the good news is you don't have to live with their names staring at you taking up desirable real estate screen space on your Gmail page. Here's how you can get rid of them in the good, non literal way. Click on ...

Google Talk Labs edition is a new desktop version of Google Talk that borrows some features from the online Google Talk Gadget, including the addition of Group Chat, emoticons and more. Google Talk Labs edition also adds new desktop notifications from Google Calendar, Orkut, and Gmail. Unfortunately, it skimps on a few of the desktop features, and seems more like an intermediate step toward a ...

Feed reading might be a little time intensive for some busy bodies. Open an application or web location, read, and repeat. How about making it a little easier? Anothr is trying its best to speed feed reading up. We covered them back in October with the release of their RSS aggregator for Skype, and now they enter the market with a reader for users of Google Talk and Jabber clients. To get Anothr ...

Today marks the one-year anniversary of what could have been a great milestone between AOL and Google."'Could have been'?" you ask? Well, one year ago today the two internet giants announced a $1 billion deal that put 5% of Google AOL in AOL Google's pocket. One result they promised was that the companies' instant messaging products, Google Talk and AIM, would be interoperable, allowing Google ...
