YouTube.com/create is a page dedicated to letting you easily create videos for YouTube, without ever touching a camera. The page starts out as a collection of links to Xtranormal, Stupeflix, and GoAnimate, three services focused on letting you build videos using animated avatars and custom speech. Basically, you choose your avatars, and then write their lines. A text-to-speech engine will then magically make them utter whatever words you wanted them to.

Although they've been integrated into YouTube, all the three editors are hosted by the respective service providers. All the editors have freemium features, such as more sound options and animations, which you can get if you pay for them. YouTube has told TechCrunch that there are no financial transactions going on between the three animation providers and itself, and that the only purpose of the new integration is to give everyone a chance to have a YouTube video, whether they can afford a camera or not. Of course, it was possible to cross-post videos created with Xtranormal, Stupeflix or GoAnimate to YouTube before, but now that their features are accessible directly from YouTube, we're clearly bound to see a surge in the number of animated videos hosted on Google's video site.
YouTube now lets you create animated videos, no camera necessary originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 11:15:00 EST.

Google has acquired Green Parrot Pictures, a company that specializes in video quality improvement technology.

It sounds like Google (and its massive YouTube wing) want to do something about the low-quality video that comes from smartphones and webcams -- and judging by the demonstrations of its technologies on the Green Parrot Pictures site (embedded after the break), it looks like Google has made a very sound acquisition indeed.

Green Parrot Pictures has technology that can effectively remove camera shake and flicker, and restore detail lost to noise and blotches. It also has two 'enhancement' technologies: Slo Motion can interpolate frames to create fake slow motion, and Color Transfer can improve faded color, or make something look more vivid than it really is.

It isn't immediately clear how Green Parrot Pictures' technology will be used -- it will require lots of computational power, that's for sure -- but if Google can work it into the standard YouTube video uploader, the overall quality of content on YouTube could increase significantly. Speaking from personal experience, Lee's constant stream of shaking-with-laughter cute cat videos make me nauseous -- if Green Parrot Pictures can remove camera shake, day-to-day life in the Download Squad bunker would be a lot more pleasant.

Now playing in the YouTube Screening Room, 'Girl Walks Into A Bar' is the 'first ever' Hollywood film created specifically for the Internet. Brought to you for free in partnership with Lexus, the Sebastian Gutiérrez-directed film is a comedy charting the events of a single night involving a seemingly unrelated group of people, including a desperate dentist, an undercover private detective, a pickpocket, a gangster, and an exotic dancer, at ten different bars throughout Los Angeles.

Starring some pretty big Hollywood names, including Carla Gugino, Zachary Quinto, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Josh Hartnett, and Emmanuelle Chriqui, among others, the film is available in both chaptered installments or in its entirety via YouTube's Screening Room in resolutions up to 1080p.

Does this mark a turning point in Hollywood's interactions with the Internet, moving away from being considered a threat, to more of an opportunity? Let's hope so.
First Hollywood film made for the Internet premieres on YouTube originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 14 Mar 2011 06:30:00 EST. Google's Demo Slam turns it up a notch with the first-ever Demo Slampionship, which kicked off yesterday. The idea behind Demo Slam is pretty simple: pit videos of technical demos against each other for users to vote on. By doing this you to get your tech demo in front of as many eyeballs as possible, roping in those least likely to watch a standard tech demo -- Joe Public.

Google's 2011 Demo Slampionship sees 16 tech demos battling it out in a four-round knockout-style cup. Users jump on over to the DemoSlam site, watch the two competing videos in each matchup, and choose which demo they'd put through to the next round. The one with the most votes in each pairing at the end of the round (just over 7 days from now) goes through to vie off against another winner of the previous round.

Right now there are 16 videos to watch, ranging from beautiful animation using Google Docs to ordering a Curry in Hindi with the power of Google Translate. While it's a predictably Google tool dominated affair, most of the videos are fun and worth watching.

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to DemoSlam right now to get watching and voting. Let us know in the comments if you find a video that changes your life, and share the love with your fellow DLS readers.
Google's Demo Slampionship kicks off with 16 contenders originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 17 Feb 2011 03:55:00 EST. While I'm not a huge sports fan, I can appreciate a good ad when I see one; and the Super Bowl sometimes feels like it's as much about the ads as it is about the sport.

YouTube Ad Blitz is an official YouTube channel going strong since 2007, with over 21 million channel views. It shows all Super Bowl commercials, uploaded instantly once they're broadcast in-game. Saw an ad you liked? Now you can watch it again! Better yet, the channel makes it super-easy to share ads with friends who missed them during the game.

A big part of the fun is being able to vote for your favorite commercials; it's actually an official contest, with rules written up by lawyers and all. The contest goes on until Feb 14th, and you can vote as you watch, using the thumbs up/thumbs down buttons on each video.

At any rate, contest or no contest, this is a beautiful showcase of the latest and greatest in advertising.
YouTube Ad Blitz 2011 lets you watch, share and rate Super Bowl ads originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 10 Feb 2011 13:30:00 EST.
In case you can't make it to the Sundance Film Festival for some reason, YouTube's got you covered. The well-known independent film event is taking place in Park City, Utah, between January 20 and 30 this year, and the YouTube Screening Room is going to do its best to make you feel like you're there.

Over the next few weeks, the Screening Room will feature four career-starting short films from past Sundance festivals, four short films from past participants in the Sundance Director's Lab, and 12 short films from the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

This week, four new films from up-and-coming directors are ready to watch:

8 Bits is about a fight between an 8-bit superhero and a high-definition boss

Andy and Zach is about a guy trying to set up a new life when his roommate and best friend moves out

Skateistan: To Live and Skate in Kabul is about an oasis that lets children be children, allowing them to build the cross-cultural relationships that may bring stability to Afghanistan

The High Level Bridge is about honoring the memory of those who've jumped from Edmonton's High Level Bridge

YouTube, after testing a redesign of its homepage for quite a while, has now begun the rollout to all YouTube users. The new homepage brings many improvements, all designed to make it more personal to each user.

The 'Videos Being Watched Now' module has been removed, and some modules that haven't seen much use, such as 'Spotlight' and 'Featured Videos' have been moved to the right sidebar, to make room for the main feature of the new homepage: a list of personally relevant videos, made up from recommendations for you, your subscription activity, as well as videos being shared by your friends.

You can filter the homepage to show only the newest content from your subscriptions. And if a channel uploads more than one video in a day, you'll see all those videos on your homepage, as opposed to just one of them in the past. The new homepage knows which videos you've already seen, and they appear grayed out. Videos that you have liked or favorited are always easy to get back to. You can remove any video from the homepage, and you can now quickly get to your inbox when you have new messages or comments.

The new homepage is in the process of being rolled out to all YouTube users, so if you don't see it yet, don't worry, you will soon -- and incidentally, the new features only work while you're logged in.
YouTube rolls out new personalized homepage to all users originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 20 Jan 2011 13:30:00 EST. To watch the videos your phone needs to be running at least Android 2.2, and your YouTube app has to be version 2.x. The latest version of the YouTube app is available in the Android Market.

Within YouTube for Android, music videos are now clearly marked with a music note symbol. You can also read the artist's bio while watching the video. The 'artist tracks' tab lets you easily discover more music from the same singer, and the 'related artists' tab will give you suggestions for similar bands or singers.

Additionally, YouTube for Android will begin showing pre-roll ads for "tens of thousands of YouTube partner videos", and although Google has tested ads on YouTube mobile before this will be the largest step they've ever made towards mobile monetization.

Ads on mobile YouTube were clearly coming, of course, since this is Google we're talking about after all, but perhaps some Android device owners will still be surprised at just how many they'll start seeing all of a sudden. Mobile ads on other platforms will be the next step for Google, but for now, Android users are alone in this.

Finally, while announcing all of the above in a blog post, YouTube also shared an interesting stat with the world: it now gets more than 200 million views a day from mobile devices, an increase of 300% over 2009 levels.
YouTube app for Android gets pre-roll ads, access to Vevo's music video library originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 15:30:00 EST. These days, you no longer have to be an esoteric nerd to sport a dual-monitor setup. Heck, many of us use three monitors, and some have been known to use entire walls. Now, when you have such a setup and try to watch a YouTube video in full-screen, you quickly discover an irritating fact: While you're watching a video in full-screen on one monitor, any click on another monitor collapses the video back to its tiny windowed size.

There are ways to get around this by replacing specific Flash DLLs with tweaked versions, but really, who wants to mess with system files like this? Window Expander for Chrome is a far less invasive solution. It adds a button to Chrome's Omnibar which you can click to display a full-screen window with the video you're currently watching. Since Chrome has so little, well, chrome, it's the next best thing to full-screen. Window Expander is simple, and it works. Go give it a try!
Window Expander for Chrome lets you view YouTube videos in near-full screen without hacking Flash originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 18:00:00 EST.
Embedded YouTube videos have received a new clickable link in the upper-right corner that appears when you hover over the video. This is called 'Watch later', and predictably, lets you watch the video later.

Here's how it works: You spot an interesting video embedded somewhere, but don't have time to watch it just then. Click on 'Watch later'. Then, when you have time to watch it, just go to YouTube.com and all the videos you have marked for watching later are waiting for you right there on the homepage.

You need to be logged in to YouTube for this feature to show up -- which makes sense if you think about it, as it's better to associate the videos with an account rather than a browser-specific cookie.

There currently seems to be no way to make a video marked for watching later disappear from your YouTube homepage, other than by watching it. Surely, after Google has ironed out all the kinks of this feature, this may change.

One final note: some say that this doesn't work on all embedded YouTube videos. Whether or not that's so, we haven't been able to confirm, as all the embeds we've tried have the new link on them. And it's clearly not dependent on whether the new iFrame-based embed codes are used, since we've also seen the link show up on videos embedded using the default code. Anyway, perhaps you should expect to come across one or more videos that won't let you mark them for later viewing just yet.

YouTube now lets you watch embedded videos later on YouTube.com originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 21 Dec 2010 17:00:00 EST. Have you ever wanted to be in at the beginning of a viral YouTube trend? Well, now's your chance, thanks to YouTube Trends.

There are two parts of Trends: a website (which is actually a rather fancy blog), and the Trends Dashboard. The website shows you currently-trending videos (it picks out four new videos at 4am and 4pm every day), and also offers more in-depth contextual analysis of the streaming video universe.

The Trends Dashboard is a totally different beast. It lets you see which videos are trending in a specific demographic, with the ability to sort by location (US state, or country), age group, and sex. Immediately, you can see that Lego Black Ops is very popular with those between 13 and 17, but that adults are currently digging the Metrodome Roof Collapse.

If that wasn't cool enough, you can do a side-by-side comparison of up to three different demographics. There are some shocking differences, even between the east and west coast of America; while the teenage girls of Atlanta are loving Bruno Mars, those in Los Angeles are into Justin Bieber. If you're into other cultures -- if you're a Japanophile, for example -- you could also use this tool to find videos that are right up your alley.
YouTube Trends launches, now even easier to be virally hip originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 07:00:00 EST.
It's fairly easy to download YouTube videos, but they usually come in FLV or MP4 format when you grab them right off YouTube. TinyOgg is a lightweight service that lets you grab those same videos, or just the audio, in the open source Ogg format.

It couldn't be simpler to use: you just feed it with a YouTube URL, and hit Convert. You then get a short URL; after a few minutes, this URL contains a link to an Ogg file you can download and watch at your leisure. By default, this link is made public and can be seen in the queue.

There's also a more detailed form that lets you keep the link private (so it doesn't show up in the public queue), download the file in the highest quality from YouTube (so the converter gets the best raw material to work with), and rip just the music, with no video content at all. That last one is somewhat dubious on the copyright side of things, but is very handy nonetheless.

TinyOgg lets you quickly convert YouTube videos to Ogg format originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 03:45:00 EST. The limit had been raised to 15 minutes for all users (up from 10 minutes prior to that) back in July. As of today, users "with a history of complying with the YouTube Community Guidelines" and the copyright rules that YouTube enforces will be able to upload videos of unlimited length.

The only requirement seems to be for the videos you upload to constitute original content. YouTube says that today's enhancement was made possible by the continued improvement of its tools for copyright owners.

If YouTube ever decides to let everyone upload unlimited length videos (or at least the majority of its users), it will be interesting to see what effect that will have on the quality of the videos on the site, since, like Twitter, YouTube has always been about working within the service's imposed brevity.

To find out if you're in the subset of users who already have the ability to upload longer videos, just click on 'Upload' in the top right corner of YouTube once you're logged in.
YouTube makes video length unlimited for some users originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 14:51:00 EST.
Some people say that Flash video playback can be a tad crappy at times. This is a pretty obvious business oppurtunity for competing video products, and indeed, DivX tries to one-up Adobe with its DivX HiQ Beta 2.

It's a whole (free) bundle of applications, but the interesting one is the DivX Web Player. It's basically a player that latches onto the YouTube player and a bunch of other common video players online, and offers an alternative Play button. When you hit that button, DivX takes over and plays the source video data using its own codec.

Using the DivX codec supposedly yields a bit of a performance boost on slower systems, but caveat emptor: This is still beta. When I tried it, the alternative Play button never showed up on Chrome, and when it showed up on Firefox, pressing it only caused an error message to pop up saying "the video cannot be found". Still, if you have an older computer, you might want to give this one a try (especially once it loses the Beta label).

DivX HiQ Beta does Flash video better than Adobe originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 05:00:00 EST.
As expected, YouTube has introduced a new ad format called TrueView Video Ads. The big novelties that this product brings is the viewers' ability to skip ads (after watching a minimum of 5 seconds, though) or even select which ad they would like to watch from a list. Advertisers are charged only when a viewer has chosen to watch an ad, and not per impression.

Allowing people to choose the ads they like to see or just skip ads that aren't interesting to them helps advertisers too, apparently, no matter how counterintuitive that may seem at first glance. Using this system, they can target their ads better, which results in higher click-through rates, which is what all advertisers want after all. While this is clearly a step in the right direction, from all points of view, don't expect such ads to be in every ad-filled YouTube video you'll watch from now on. Over time, if the advertisers continue to be pleased with the new format, such ads may become the most widespread on YouTube.

TrueView Video Ads are only available to advertisers with managed accounts at the moment. Also, using this format is the advertisers' choice -- they may opt to stick to more traditional, non-skippable ads. Let's hope they won't.

YouTube's new TrueView Video Ads are skippable originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 02 Dec 2010 15:34:00 EST.
Auto HD for YouTube is a fairly simple Chrome add-on, which has a similar function to the many Greasemonkey scripts that do the same thing: it makes YouTube default to high-quality playback. I've tried it out, and here are some quick thoughts:

No auto buffering: Sadly, this add-on doesn't change YouTube's default behavior, which is to just start playing the video rather than buffer and wait for you to hit Play. So if you have a slow connection and still wish to enjoy HD, you might be better off with the Greasemonkey script called YouTube Auto Buffer & Auto HD & Remove Ads.

Doesn't work well with channels: I've tried it out with the Pomplamoose video channel, and it just wouldn't work. The video played at 480p. Only when I clicked through to an individual video page did the add-on kick in.

Handy options: You can have the player auto-widen, and you can set four different quality settings: "Preferred," "Secondary," "Fallback," and even "Secondary fallback." I must say, "Secondary fallback" sounds like a bit of an overkill to me, but it's available.

All in all, it does work. If you'd rather use native Chrome add-ons than Greasemonkey scripts, try it on for size.

Auto HD for YouTube lets you pre-set Chrome for 720p in YouTube originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 13:00:00 EST.
Let's say you have a girlfriend. And let's say that girlfriend is in a faraway land, and the only thing keeping you connected is that tangle of wires we fondly call "the Internet." Or maybe you've got a bunch of nerdy friends, each ensconced in his own basement, or perhaps in distant parts of the country.

These are just two situations where something like YouTube Social could come in very handy. It's a neat service for watching videos together with friends, synced in real-time, with chat thrown in for good measure.

What I like most about it is how easy it is to start with: you take the URL of a YouTube video (say, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6G5JaicYuVU), and just stick the word "social" after "youtube." So you get http://www.youtubesocial.com/watch?v=6G5JaicYuVU.

You then get a rich (almost cluttered) interface with your video taking center stage, and a TinyURL link that you can send to your friends. They just need to click the link to join you. Now, whenever you play the video, pause it, or even scrub to a different position, their videos follow suit. There's a chat pane where you can all talk about what you're watching, too. You can also give the "remote" to someone else so that they get to control the video.

The only downside is that the service is heavily Facebook-driven. I mean, the only way to get a proper nick ("username") in the chat is to be logged onto Facebook. That's pretty annoying; other than that, it's definitely a handy service!

YouTube Social lets you watch videos with friends online originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 10:00:00 EST. Sitting at the top of the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace is the most anticlimactic app of all time: YouTube.

After installing and eagerly clicking the icon I was greeted with... m.youtube.com. Yes, the YouTube app is a shortcut to the built-in Web browser. No more, no less... just a shortcut.

I suppose you could say that this is the first smartphone Web app -- but really, it's just laziness. Incidentally, did you know that Windows Phone 7 also lacks a Windows Live Messenger app? Maybe there's a Web-based client that I can use instead..
Google has just launched a new Android app -- YouTube Remote -- that turns your phone into the world's most expensive remote control. To use it, simply grab the app from the Android Market, sign into your YouTube (Google) account, and voilá: control of YouTube Leanback either on your PC or Google TV.

Unfortunately, as the app is only available on the American Android Market, I'm unable to test it. From the screenshot, it looks like the interface is fairly simple: you can skip, stop, and pause videos, change the volume, and add new videos to the playlist. I can see this being more useful for Google TV where you're actually some distance from your keyboard -- if you're using Leanback on your PC, it's just a matter of leaning forward to hit the pause button, or skip to the next video.

This is a beta app, incidentally. The official YouTube Android app will almost certainly be updated to contain the same Leanback connectivity in due course. The QR code is after the break.
Continue reading YouTube Remote for Android -- control Google TV or Leanback from your phone

YouTube Remote for Android -- control Google TV or Leanback from your phone originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 07:30:00 EST. Ever since Google announced its 'open source' WebM video format, they've been slowly but surely transcoding the entire YouTube video library. According to an update from John Luther, the Product Manager for WebM, while speaking at the Streaming Media West conference, as it stands now, 80% of all video available through YouTube is in the WebM format -- a significant amount of video indeed.

This is good news for proponents of the VP8 video codec and the WebM container, as the more content that's actually available in the format, the more support it's likely to get. On that front, most of the major browsers natively support WebM, with Opera 10, Chrome 6, and Firefox 4 all on board, while third-party codecs are available for use in both Safari and IE. Whether WebM and VP8 will remain free from patent suits, only time will tell -- but Google's certainly full steam ahead.
YouTube finishes transcoding 80% of video catalog to WebM originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 08:30:00 EST. A couple of weeks ago, AirPlay support for YouTube videos mysteriously disappeared from beta versions of iOS 4.2, the latest update to Apple's mobile OS. That meant users couldn't stream YouTube vids from their iPhones and iPads to their desktops and AppleTVs. With the release of the iOS 4.2 golden master to developers yesterday, though, AirPlay is back in the YouTube app, and it's better than ever.

AirPlay now has its own set of controls in the multitasking bar, just like the iPod app. That means you can control your streaming music and videos without leaving your current game of Angry Birds. Aside from YouTube and iPod, AirPlay also works in Safari and iFiles. Don't be alarmed if you can't stream to your AppleTV yet, though. Apple still needs to release an AppleTV software update, which should come out around the time iOS 4.2 is available to the public.

Here's a little tidbit which was new to a few of us on the Download Squad team... When you right-click a YouTube video, there are site-specific options in addition to the Flash defaults! Some of you may be face-palming right now, so if you already know about this, feel free to move on with your life.

If you don't, definitely file this under "good to know": By default, the Flash context menu is very generic. I mean, try right-clicking on one of our Time Wasters and you'll see. The default context menu just lets you zoom in, control the quality, access Flash settings, and do some other very generic and boring operations. But the YouTube menu lets you perform a whole bunch of additional actions, such as accessing the Speed Test page, stop downloading the video (useful when the video is embedded in an RSS feed), and displaying video info.

Incidentally, Vimeo has a similar menu -- which also lets you turn HD on and off, as well as do a few other things the YouTube menu doesn't allow, such as looping the video.

YouTube tip: Use the context menu for copying the embed code, and more originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 31 Oct 2010 09:00:00 EST.
Did you know that YouTube offers a spiffy online version of Trivial Pursuit? It's surprisingly addictive, too!

Each round consists of three questions, and one "Bet on Me" card. The three questions are real trivia questions, which can be quite challenging:

From Ghosts > Geography: Which U.S. landmark is said to be haunted by the ghost of Abraham Lincoln?

Drums > Science and Nature: What type of animal is a red drum?

Lost and Found > Entertainment: From what city did Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 depart when it crashed on a Pacific island in the television series Lost?

Tricky stuff, eh? I know! Note that I didn't write any of the answers so that I wouldn't spoil it for you. But the fourth card is the most fun, really; it's the Bet on Me card, which shows you a YouTube celebrity (think Tay Zonday) along with a question that they were asked. You have to guess whether or not they got the answer right.

You get chips (casino chips, not potato ones) every time you get an answer right or win a bet on a YouTube celeb. At the top of the board, you can see the overall tally - The People's Chips vs. YouTube Chips.

So far, The People are winning!

YouTube Trivial Pursuit is as addictive as the real thing originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 23 Oct 2010 11:00:00 EST.
YouTube's Partner Program for musicians, commonly known as Musicians Wanted, has been expanded out of the US this week. Musicians in Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, the U.K., Sweden, the Czech Republic, Argentina, and New Zealand, can now get in on the revenue sharing action for their music videos. By signing up for the Partner Program, you keep the rights to everything you do, which for many musicians is the biggest worry when signing with labels, let alone a video sharing site like YouTube. While the list of supported countries is now greatly increased, it's still well short of what Google would have you believe is "worldwide." Still, it's an improvement, and if you're a musician with a music video up on YouTube, and you haven't tried to have it pulled down already, perhaps now's the time to sign up and make some money off the back of your hard work from YouTube. What have you got to lose?
But Google is working to change this situation -- it started with Gmail, and now it has decoupled YouTube from the OS as well, making it a standalone app available in the Android Market. Hopefully this opens the door for more frequent updates!

With this new version, you can watch videos in portrait mode as well as landscape, like, comment, view comments while watching video, view channel information, and share videos on your favorite social networks. There's also a personalized home screen video feed and a revamped UI with new playback controls.

That's certainly a long list of welcome additions. So what's the caveat, you ask? Well, you'll only find this new version in the Android Market if you're on Android 2.2, and that's a shame. Thanks to phone manufacturers not caring about software support all that much, many people are still stuck on earlier versions.

If you are on 2.2, you can get the new YouTube by searching for it in the Android Market on your phone, or you can download it from AppBrain.
YouTube for Android 2.2 gets an update, becomes standalone app originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 22 Oct 2010 04:30:00 EST. You can now embed your YouTube-derived mixtapes on your blog or even Facebook, since oEmbed is used to ensure the widest possible compatibility. The embedded video player looks great and even has a toggle for Audio only playback in case you don't want to get distracted by the videos.

Another feature that may be new is support for multiple authors of a mixtape. This is called a "YouTube party," and it lets you invite anyone to add videos to the mix.

Other than that, Dragontape is still the same beautiful-looking, simple service that Erez wrote about not long ago.

To put the new embed feature to good use, our staff pick mixtape featuring street music is waiting for you after the jump.

At first, I thought that Dragontape had something to do with dragons, but sadly, it doesn't. It's more along the lines of "drag on tape," which means that you get a long, long timeline (or "tape") and you drag YouTube videos onto it.

The goal is to create a playlist, such as this staff pick playlist featuring street music. A playlist can be up to three hours long, which is a tad extreme if you ask me, but I guess some people could use the room for self-expression.

This write-up cannot possibly do Dragontape justice, because the interface has to be seen. Through the magic of advanced JavaScript, the timeline interface floats over the currently playing video with a low-fi scan line effect, and it looks very slick.

This beautiful presentation made me curious enough to rummage through the sources (mainly because I wanted to see if it was all Flash), and I discovered that they use Yahoo's YUI JavaScript Library. This has to be one of the most creative implementations I've seen yet, and it's well worth checking out if you like music videos (or just music).

After the jump, you can find a short demo video by Dragontape.

Continue reading Dragontape lets you create and listen to YouTube-based mixtapes

Dragontape lets you create and listen to YouTube-based mixtapes originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 16:00:00 EST.
YTTM apparently stands for "YouTube Time Machine," although that's not specifically mentioned on the site. What it does is very easy to understand, though. You move a slider to a specific year between 1860 and 2010, and you get a bunch of YouTube videos related to that year. Yes, I said 1860 (that's not a typo).

Not all hits are spot-on, though. When I chose 1972, I got a video from 1970. So, I guess you could say YMMV with YTTM (sorry, couldn't help myself there). But for the most part, the hits are relevant. I think it just takes the year from the video's name on YouTube.

You can narrow your search down by categories, such as Video Games, Television, Commercials, Current Events, Sports, Movies, and Music. I'm afraid there are not many video game related videos from the 19th century, though.

One detail which annoyed me was that toggling a filter reloads the entire page. It's as if AJAX was never invented - you click a button, and suddenly the whole page blinks out and reloads. I hope they get that fixed.

Notwithstanding this one quirk, YTTM is a nice way to travel through time. Just dial in a year, and watch the videos. When you've had enough of a certain clip, you can just click Watch next video and be transported to the next one - no searching involved.

YouTube Time Machine helps you reminisce with YouTube videos from a certain year originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 15:30:00 EST.
Conducted by Arabic-language television network Al Arabiya, these interviews will draw from a pool of questions that have been submitted by you and I. You can go ahead and submit a question now -- and vote on other questions! Voting is, as you'd expect, pretty contentious -- but for some reason, even neutral questions like 'When will the new government be formed?', which has 23 thumbs-up votes, has 10 thumbs-down votes. In fact, almost all of the questions have a lot of thumbs-downing...

These questions will be posed to the sitting Prime Minister of Iraq, the Prime Minister of Kurdistan and 'others,' so if you have something important to ask... ask! The deadline is next Monday, September 27.
'Ask an Iraqi leader,' courtesy of YouTube originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 07:30:00 EST.
This first test will see live content streamed by four of its partners: Howcast, Next New Networks (Barely Political), Rocketboom and Young Hollywood. Admittedly I haven't heard of any of them -- and I'm more interested in watching the season finale of True Blood -- but looking at their channel pages, they all seem to be popular.

The test will run for two days, after which live streaming will presumably be rolled out to the unwashed masses. While I'm sure there'll be tons of user-generated content, I'm more interested in whether YouTube can strike up broadcast deals with real broadcasters. TV shows, live music, news... this could be massive.

The live broadcast schedule for today is below -- see if anything catches your eye!

It looks like Google isn't stopping at free phone calls to the U.S. and Canada In their never-ending quest to win new fans. They're also going to let you watch all the free, full-length movies you can handle over on YouTube! That's good.

The selection, however, doesn't include current releases and there aren't a lot of big-name films. That's bad. But you can watch loads of classic horror films, Three Stooges, Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, Hitchcock, and a nice selection of Bollywood titles and documentaries. That's good!

It also comes with a free frogurt! No, not really. I was just having a Treehouse of Horror flashback.

Speaking of terror, why not go watch The Brain That Wouldn't Die!?
Got a favorite webcaster on YouTube? A favorite music video, perhaps? Wish you could save the audio as an MP3? You can, of course -- there are plenty of websites and downloader apps which let you do it. Dirpy Studio is a more recent addition you may not have heard of, and it's certainly worth knowing about.

Search for a video on dirpy.com, and the results are displayed in a list. Pick your desired clip (ahoy, Alestorm!) and dirpy Studio opens the interface you see above. Rather than just giving you a file immediately, dirpy allows you to customize the file name and ID3 tag data. You can also clip a specific portion of the audio if you wish -- great for lengthy conference videos -- and video download links are also provided.

Dirpy also offers a bookmarklet, putting Studio within one-click reach while you're browsing YouTube itself.

There's still one big downside, of course: a lot of the audio on YouTube isn't of the best quality. If you're after high-quality audio, no YouTube-to-MP3 app is going to meet your standards. Dirpy's good enough to earn a spot in my bookmarks, however.

It turns out people don't like clutter. Surprise! Not that YouTube's interface is all that cluttered, but sometimes I just want to watch my video without having to see it in full screen.

Well, it turns out that there's a whole genre of websites which specialize in removing all the crud and leaving the video: in other words, they generate spartan pages with your video embedded right into them, on a white or black background.

I found all three of these on the excellent MakeUseOf, which never fails as a source for a ton of cool web-related news and tools. Here goes:

ViewPure gives you a short link, and a blank/white background. What I like about it is that it also provides a text box for creating a new page; other sites only give you a bookmarklet which you're supposed to click while on the page for the video you want to watch. Very nice.

Silentube gives you a bookmarklet, but it actually worked also when I just appended the video URL to Silentube's URL, although it claimed that "Seemes something went wrong". If you're into bookmarklets, Silentube is a nice one.

Quietube is apparently a fierce competitor of Silentube (at least if you go by the name). It has one-upped its rival, since my URL-pasting trick worked just fine on this one. You also get a bookmarklet which you can just click when you're on the video page.

One thing I would like each of these sites to do -- that they currently don't -- is to take the highest-quality video from the site, or at least let me choose the quality. I suspect that if I use the bookmarklet they display whatever quality I am currently watching, though.

These are particularly handy when you want to send someone a link to a video, and you want to show them just the video so they can focus on how hilarious/interesting it is.

Three simple ways to watch YouTube (and other) videos with no distractions originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 16 Aug 2010 12:00:00 EST. Full disclosure: AOL is indeed our benevolent overlord. However, Download Squad bloggers are under no obligation to speak kindly of their products or applications.

AOL Lifestream is an excellent app -- and it's certainly a far cry from the clunky, over-designed browser and dial-up software you used to see given away on floppy disks. Ahh, the good old days -- which are gone, and really weren't that great if you're comparing dial-up to DSL, cable, or fiber. Moving on!

Lifestream is a solid social networking aggregator. With support for key social sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr, Digg, Delicious, and now Foursquare, Lifestream presents a clean, simple way to keep tabs on all your friends' activity in one centralized location. While Lifestream might be a bit underpowered for social superstars, It's an excellent choice for average users -- as well as savvy users who don't need a more complex app.

Already available via the web and in the App Store, AOL has now added an extension for Google Chrome. While it's not going to transform Chrome into the super-social browsing experience that Flock 3 presents, the Lifestream extension is still a very handy way to keep your entire stream within easy reach without being distracted by it.

One evening, a while back, I put a bunch of eggs to boil and went back into my room. Over an hour later, when smoke started seeping in from under the door, I remembered with a start that I completely forgot about the eggs. Bursting out of my room into the smoke-filled apartment, I made my way to the stove and shut it off. Of course, not only were the eggs ruined, but the whole place reeked of smoke for days later, even after I've ventilated the heck out of it.

Had I used EggWatchers at the time, this would not have happened! Admittedly, there are lots of other egg timers around, but this is one of the nicest versions I've seen.

You start off by specifying whether your egg is medium or large, straight from the fridge or room temperature, and whether you'd like it "squidgy" (their word, not mine) or firm. As you walk through the wizard, your little egg avatar animates accordingly. In the screenshot you can see a medium-sized egg, straight from the fridge (that's why it's wearing a beanie), that I want "firm" (hence the "tough-guy" look).

Once you feed all of these variables into EggWatchers, its advanced algorithm computes the recommended duration for cooking your egg. It then uses YouTube to find a video which is exactly as long as it would take for your egg to be ready.

You then go drop your egg in the boiling water, come back to the computer, hit start the timer and watch a completely random YouTube video. When the video is done, that's exactly the right time for you to go enjoy your perfectly-boiled egg. Ahh, the Internet is a magical place!

Of course, 15 minutes is also enough time to upload a big segment of a TV show or movie, but it sounds like YouTube now trusts its copy protection enough to give users that power.

To celebrate the extension to 15 minutes, YouTube is holding a 15 Minutes of Fame video contest. To enter, make a 15-minute video, and tag it "yt15minutes." YouTube will pick some entries to feature on the front page on August 4th. It could be an opportunity for some lesser-known creators to rack up some views!

One caveat from the YouTube blog, though:
"if you're uploading a video that was previously rejected for being too long, you'll have to go into "My Videos" and delete it before attempting to upload it again."

What do you think the extra 5 minutes are going to be used for? Will this enable more interesting videos, or just longer versions of the same funny cat videos YouTube has always hosted?
Because copying and pasting is so easy, you might not have paid much attention to the embed code itself, though. Well, now's a good time to start looking, because YouTube is changing to a shorter, more compatible embed code, using the
<iframe>
tag.

What does that mean to the average YouTube user? Well, for one thing, the new code adapts to users' viewing environments, serving HTML5 or Flash videos depending on your browser and settings. It's also a big step toward showing embedded YouTube videos on mobile devices that don't have a dedicated YouTube player.

If you want to try out this enhanced embedding capability on your own site, you can just copy-paste this block of code, and fill in the video ID for the video you want to embed:

<iframe class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID" frameborder="0">
</iframe>

For a long time, the best way to watch YouTube on a mobile device has been through a YouTube app, like the one that comes with the iPhone. The mobile site was confusing to navigate, and not all that attractive to look at. Well, that dusty mobile version has been revised into a pretty, easy-to-use, HTML5-friendly site, and it makes a good case for watching YouTube in your mobile browser again.

Part of the new YouTube Mobile website is simply making the buttons bigger, so they're easier to tap on touchscreen phones. It also adds familiar features from the full YouTube site, like liking, unliking and adding to favorites. Focusing on the mobile website means YouTube can update its mobile experience more quickly than native apps, which take a while to update. The site works with iPhone and Android phones so far.

This seems like a subtle knock on Apple for not offering a new and better YouTube app with the iPhone 4. Because the YouTube app comes with the iPhone OS, it doesn't get updated unless the OS gets updated. iOS 4 would have been a good opportunity to do that, but Apple didn't take it. I'm sure Google would have gone ahead with a new mobile site anyway, because they're selling a browser-based strategy for everything these days, but it's still interesting that they framed this update in such anti-native-app terms.
In an age when there's so much online video content that you can basically watch whatever you want, why do so many people still watch plain old TV? YouTube has decided that TV's instant-on nature is what's missing from Web video -- some people don't want to make decisions about which videos to watch, they just want to turn them on like a TV and go. That's where YouTube Leanback, now in beta, enters the equation.

Open up Leanback, and it starts playing immediately, with no user input. As the official YouTube blog describes it: "
Videos tailored to your interests play as soon as you visit the site and they play in full screen and high definition, continuously. There's no need to click, search, or browse, unless you want to, of course. Watching YouTube becomes as easy as watching TV. "

Leanback gets content based on what you've watched and subscribed to, and what your Facebook friends have liked (if your YouTube account is connected to your Facebook account). You can also just watch the most popular videos on YouTube, if that's your thing. There's no need to use the mouse, either: it's the left and right buttons to skip, up to search, and down to browse. Basically, you've got the laziest, simplest viewing experience since TV itself. Neat!
It's July 4th, so what better way to spend the day than declaring your independence from traditional YouTube comment dickery than coming up with an even better way to be loud and obnoxious? Until Google closes a rather serious hole in YouTube's comment code, you're going to see stuff like the marquee above appearing on YouTube videos all over the place.

The "hack" -- if it can even be called that -- is fairly simple and is being copy and pasted like mad. Be prepared to be offended, because it's safe to say that the fun-loving kids of /b/ are going to... er... take liberties with popular items like Justin Bieber videos.

Maybe they'll use the exploit for good -- like encouraging people to help out with the pollbombing to send Biebs to North Korea on his world tour.
