Kindlebility will format the websites so that viewing them on the Kindle isn't a pain. Once you've set it up (more on that in a moment), Kindlebility only requires one click to use -- and the pages arrive on your Kindle in seconds.

Before you use Kindlebility for the first time, you have to quickly set it up. This only needs to be done once, and requires that you go to the Kindlebility site and enter your Kindle email address (something @free.kindle.com or @kindle.com). The bookmarklet is then generated for you, and you can drag it to your bookmarks bar. However, you can't use it just yet. You need to go to Amazon, enter your account page, and find the email whitelist under the Manage My Kindle settings. Then just add kindle@darkhelmetlive.com to the whitelist.

That's it. Whenever you're surfing the Web on your computer and find an interesting page that you want to read on your Kindle, just click the Kindlebility bookmarklet. A quick demo video showing you how to set Kindlebility up is after the break.
Continue reading Kindlebility sends Web pages from your computer to your Kindle

Kindlebility sends Web pages from your computer to your Kindle originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 14:40:00 EST.

The SeaMonkey Project has released SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 3, a version that makes a lot of new functionality available to a wide audience for the first time. A lot of stuff has been added and tweaked since SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 2 hit the streets back in February, and we're now one step closer to the final release of version 2.1 of the integrated Internet app suite.

SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 3 lets you enter Safe Mode from the Help menu, and you can permanently apply some of the Safe Mode settings if you so wish. When a plug-in crashes, you're now instantly presented with options, such as reloading the page. Built-in extensions such as ChatZilla, JavaScript debugger, DOM inspector, and DebugQA are now installed by default. SeaMonkey Sync has received an easier setup process, and Windows 7 jump lists are now supported. Also added are detection of outdated plug-ins, WebGL support, an optional search bar (including suggestions for search engines that support them), an engine manager for OpenSearch, and plug-ins now work in feeds shown in MailNews windows.

ChatZilla is working again, as are the JavaScript Debugger Venkman, as well as download progress display in the Windows 7 taskbar. Restoring large browser sessions has been improved, and you can even switch tabs by mouse scrolling.

This being a beta, the obvious warnings apply: stuff may break, bugs may show up everywhere, and generally speaking you probably shouldn't use this version as your daily driver -- at least not from the get-go, without having tested it for a while first.

It's a big day for Google, what with the announcement that Kansas City (not that Kansas City, but the other one that's actually in Kansas) has been selected to be the lucky town to get wired up with Google Fiber -- but that's not all they've gone public with today. Their "+1" project, which has been the subject of conjecture for months, was finally unveiled as well.

Google didn't exactly surprise anyone by announcing +1, but they did throw plenty of people for a loop. +1 isn't what most people expected it to be; it's technically social, but it's not social like a social network. The phrase "plus one" has nothing to do with dining out or going to parties. Google Profiles did not suddenly gain any sort of hyper-social layer. No, its name is actually more literal than even those examples, because all +1 is, is a tiny little box that says "+1" next to search results.

Basically, +1 is a "Like" button for Google Search.

The idea behind +1 is that while you're searching, you can "+1" results that you want to vouch for (or just plain love). When your friends go searching for something related that brings up those results, they'll be able to see that you've "+1'd" them. There will also be a tab added to your Google Profile just for +1, so you can see all your recommendations (and delete them).
Continue reading Google +1 finally unveiled, probably not what you expected it to be

Google +1 finally unveiled, probably not what you expected it to be originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 15:45:00 EST.
One of the reasons Buzz never quite took off may have been the enormous backlash surrounding its launch, and Google's handling of Gmail users' privacy. The FTC claims that by not adequately informing users of the privacy issues surrounding Buzz, Google has violated the FTC Act. Specifically, Google didn't properly inform Gmail users that they had the option to decline or leave the social network, and the controls for limiting the sharing of personal information were confusing and difficult to find. If you remember, before the backlash kicked in and Google subsequently backtracked, upon joining Buzz the identities and email addresses of the people you frequently emailed were made public by default. Google received "thousands of emails" complaining about this situation, the FTC claims.
Continue reading Google settles Buzz privacy case with FTC, apologizes

Google settles Buzz privacy case with FTC, apologizes originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 13:10:00 EST.

In times of a shortage, people tend to stockpile certain things. And with the looming exhaustion of IPv4 addresses, it's really no surprise that Microsoft jumped all over Nortel's stash of nearly 700,000 addresses when they became available for purchase. Nortel, of course, has been selling off what assets it can as the company battles through bankruptcy proceedings.

Microsoft ponied up $7.5 million for the Nortel pool, which works out to just over $11 per IP address. There were reportedly 13 other interested buyers, but only Microsoft and three others actually submitted bids.

With the last block of IPv4 addresses already issued, snatching up 2/3 of a million in one fell swoop is a smart move by Microsoft, and we're sure they have plans for the IPs. As far as what those plans actually are, we'll just have to wait and see -- though something cloud-based seems like a safe bet.
Microsoft buys 666,624 IPv4 addresses from Nortel for $7.5 million originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 08:00:00 EST. Now playing in the YouTube Screening Room, 'Girl Walks Into A Bar' is the 'first ever' Hollywood film created specifically for the Internet. Brought to you for free in partnership with Lexus, the Sebastian Gutiérrez-directed film is a comedy charting the events of a single night involving a seemingly unrelated group of people, including a desperate dentist, an undercover private detective, a pickpocket, a gangster, and an exotic dancer, at ten different bars throughout Los Angeles.

Starring some pretty big Hollywood names, including Carla Gugino, Zachary Quinto, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Josh Hartnett, and Emmanuelle Chriqui, among others, the film is available in both chaptered installments or in its entirety via YouTube's Screening Room in resolutions up to 1080p.

Does this mark a turning point in Hollywood's interactions with the Internet, moving away from being considered a threat, to more of an opportunity? Let's hope so.
First Hollywood film made for the Internet premieres on YouTube originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 14 Mar 2011 06:30:00 EST. Speedtest.net is pretty much the go-to site for quickly figuring out how fast (or slow) your connection really is and comparing the numbers your ISP boasts with what it actually delivers. And now it's got a new coat of paint and a couple of neat features. In brief:

New UI: The map widget is much improved; it actually looks like a map now, and it's easy to see where you are.

Smart server selection: If there are several test servers nearby, Speedtest will now ping each to see which has the least latency and use that for the test. You can still specify servers manually, too.

User accounts: You can sign up for a free account and aggregate results from several computers/connections.

Speed Wave: This new feature lets you add your test results to the results of many other users, and get a nice composite view.

All in all, you get some nice, new functionality and a snazzier interface to boot. Nice!
Speedtest.net overhauled with new look, new features originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 07 Mar 2011 18:30:00 EST.

The CIA has released new figures for the number of Internet-connected users around the world. Developing countries like India, China and Brazil have gained hundreds of millions of new netizens, helping Internet Explorer post its first market share gain since July 2010. It now sits at 56.77% of the market, up 0.77%.

Firefox, which has always relied on its stronghold of Europe, has seen its largest loss ever, losing over 1% of its market share in a single month. This is due to Europe's very slow population growth and almost-saturated Internet market: China, for example, gained 100 million new users since the CIA last updated its statistics; the U.K., by comparison, has gained just 3 million.

As far as IE9 goes, it now represents a rather large 2% share of Windows 7 installations. Microsoft tells us that the RC has been downloaded 11 million times since its release three weeks ago, bringing its total number of beta and alpha downloads up to 36 million.

We'll end with a little bit of theorizing (and please chime in, if you have an opposing theory). Why is Internet Explorer the browser of choice in developing countries? Both Firefox and IE have great language/locale support, so it can't be that. It's not that Firefox is unknown in Asia, either -- it's huge in Thailand and Indonesia.

Could it simply be down to piracy? China is notorious for its number of pirate Windows installs, with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer even claiming that as 9 in 10 copies of Windows in China are pirated. The numbers seem to bear it out, too: last month, thanks to the updated CIA figures, Windows XP had its smallest market share loss in over a year.
Data from CIA shows massive Internet Explorer gain, and largest Firefox loss ever originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 01 Mar 2011 06:15:00 EST.

Not content with by far the largest cellular network in the world, state-owned China Mobile has joined forces with the state-owned Xinhua News Agency to create the state-owned search engine Panguso. Their new offering pits itself against the current incumbent, Baidu, which has 75% of the search market in China.

The idea is that Xinhua, which is one of the world's largest news agencies, will provide the content -- and judging by the front page, news is definitely front and center at the moment. China Mobile, with its 600 million mobile subscribers, will provide the technological expertise, and maintain an SMS bridge between the search engine and its mobile users.

This isn't just about mobile, though: China has 450 million Internet users, and Panguso's launch is obviously the Chinese government's attempt to grab back some of the market share from Baidu and Google. Google, incidentally, decamped from China to Hong Kong back in March 2010 -- and it was only in August 2010 that China Mobile and Xinhua begun work on Panguso. Baidu has enjoyed a virtual monopoly since its inception in 2000.

In a day and age where we have grown accustomed to the democratization and decentralization of information, it seems rather odd to see the emergence of a state-owned search engine. China already has a very strict policy on censoring politically-sensitive material, which Baidu strictly abides by -- so unless it wants to further extend its control of information inside its borders, why would the Chinese government be interested in offering an alternative?

If we fast forward a few years, to when the Chinese government eventually blocks Baidu, a whole 20% of the Internet's populace will be forced to use a state-owned search engine. Xinhua, the government-run news agency, would of course become the de facto source of news for every cellular and Internet user in China. You can probably imagine what it would be like to have just a single news source in the U.S. -- now imagine that, plus a firewall that prevents you from easily peering beyond your border to see what's actually going on...
Chinese government launches Panguso, all your search are belong to us originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 07:40:00 EST. Version 10.0.648.82 hit the beta channel earlier today, and it affected just about every piece of the browser, from the settings interface to the rendering engine.

First and foremost, the already-impressive V8 "Crankshaft" JavaScript engine has been updated. Along with the addition of GPU-accelerated video, that means browsing with Chrome is going to be noticeably snappier than with the previous version. This is no placebo effect, either; according to the Official Chrome Blog, the V8 version used in this beta shows a 66% performance increase over the current stable release.

Browser settings are now opened in their own tab, as opposed to a separate window. The added space and cleaner layout that this provides is actually quite nice, and when you think about it, a browser that can use multiple tabs really has no reason to make new windows at all, so it just makes sense. One cool side-effect of moving settings into a tab is that they're actually browsable, meaning that if you get good enough at it, you can go directly to the page for certain settings just by using its address -- like "chrome://settings/advanced" or "chrome://settings/browser."
Continue reading Google Chrome beta update brings faster JavaScript, GPU acceleration, Web app backgrounding

Google Chrome beta update brings faster JavaScript, GPU acceleration, Web app backgrounding originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 18 Feb 2011 05:45:00 EST. Competition is a good thing, and the browser arena has been a fierce arena for years now. There are at least four "major" browsers each vying for your attention, along with lots of smaller spin-offs (SRWare Iron or Flock, anyone?).

While the browser usage charts we share from time to time show overall browser usage amongst the Web at large, Download Squad readers are not exactly the average bunch in terms of browser use. So today we have one simple question for you:

What's your primary Web browser?
Tracking Protection is Internet Explorer 9's kicked-up privacy protection system, a sort of evolution from IE8's InPrivate Filtering. And while there are now four lists posted on Microsoft's official site, they're not all designed to function the same way. ZDNet's Ed Bott took an in-depth look at all four, and what he found may surprise you.

One list -- provided by TRUSTe -- does very little to block potential privacy issues. In fact, it's designed as more of an allow list, making sure that sites on the TRUSTe list have access to data which can personally target you. Have a look at the list in plain text [link] -- all of those +d domains are being allowed. At first blush, it looks as though any site which has a TRUSTe seal has been greenlighted, from yo-yoma.com to student-health-insurance-rates.com to every Windows Live domain you can think of.

This may not surprise you, of course, if you know a bit about TRUSTe. The California-based company has been providing digital privacy certifications for websites since 1997, and has posted seals on pretty much every big-name site you can think of: Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Yahoo!, IBM, and eBay are just a few. So apart from knowing that TRUSTe's list gives the all-clear to any sites it has previously stamped, it's also worth knowing that TRUSTe received some heat in the past following a report by Benjamin Edelman, who found that sites with TRUSTe certs were 50% more likely to violate privacy policies than those without.

If you're hoping to use an IE9 Tracking Protection list for actual privacy protection, we'd recommend going with EasyList -- which performed very well in Bott's testing.
Internet Explorer 9 Tracking Protection Lists not all created equal originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 12:30:00 EST. The SeaMonkey all-in-one Internet application suite is making steady progress to a 2.1 release, with beta 2 rolling off the presses yesterday. While they insist that the 2.1 beta 2 update is still 'intended for testers only,' it comes packing a fair few additions to the SeaMonkey armory bringing it more inline with current Firefox implementations. Here's what's changed since 2.1 beta 1:

The new Data Manager is now invoked instead of the previous separate management windows when needed.

Sync has been added allowing browsing history, passwords, bookmarks, preferences and tabs to be synchronised between machines just like Firefox.

DoNotTrack has been added as a Privacy & Security preference.

Persona support (themes) has been implemented for Address Book, Composer, and MailNews.

WebGL and D3D have been enabled for where needed and supported.

Dramatic improvement in start-up speed.

If you're a SeaMonkey user and you haven't tried 2.1 yet, beta 2 certainly adds a few desirable features. So, if you're ready to take the plunge, then head on over to the SeaMonkey website to get your download on.
SeaMonkey 2.1 beta 2 introduces Sync, DoNotTrack, Personas and more originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 03:52:00 EST. Each of the five regional registries -- North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia -- now have only a few million IP addresses to allocate.

IP address exhaustion will hit Asia first. With 24 million IP addresses used by APNIC in January 2011, and only around 50 million addresses left in its pool, exhaustion is expected to occur in the next few months. Europe will be next, probably towards the end of 2011, and North America will follow sometime in 2012.

Are you prepared for the IPocalypse?!
Last blocks of IPv4 addresses allocated, exhaustion now imminent originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 07:00:00 EST. As civil unrest stretches across the country, Egypt has gone dark. The Egyptian government seems to have enforced a blanket Internet shutdown at the ISP level, in what is an unprecedented maneuver that has forced the country offline. If that wasn't enough SMS and BlackBerry services seem to be affected too, and there's even rumors of landlines and cellphone services being cut off.

It's certainly a scary time, as the populace rails against the government. Is the communication services blackout an attempt to stop organization of protests within the country, or is it to prevent the outside world from seeing what's really going on? Whatever is happening in the dead zone, as always, we hope for a peaceful conclusion and a return to stability for the country.
Egypt blocks Internet access, BlackBerry and SMS as civil unrest continues originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 04:30:00 EST.
With IPv4 providing only 4.3 billion addresses, we all knew that the end of the reckless and fancy-free Internet era was coming -- we just didn't know when. The death knell has started to ring. Asia is on its knees plaintively pleading for its fix of IP addresses. Smartphones, the fastest growing market, will soon be unable to connect to the Internet. You might turn on your desktop PC, only to be told that you need to wait for an IP address to become available.

In short, it's now high time to consider our options.
Continue reading IP addresses are about to run out. With Drupal powering 1% of all the websites in the world, including such high profile sites as WhiteHouse.gov, it should probably show up on your radar if you're looking for a solid CMS.

Some of the quirks that have always been associated with Drupal have been ironed out, others -- such as usability -- have been made a bit better and will be the focus of Drupal 8. In Drupal 7, the installation procedure has been simplified (though it still isn't at WordPress levels of simplicity), the administration interface has been redesigned, the code has generally been optimized, and there are more flexible options for content.

The content, users and configuration screens have been reorganized. There are also many improvements for developers and system administrators, such as a new field system, better update and maintenance procedures, and the ability to connect Drupal to almost any type of database.

The default installation includes modules for OpenID support, forums and contact forms, and any of these can be enabled or disabled if you so choose.

Documentation on installing Drupal 7 is available here, and if you're wondering how to update from Drupal 6, you can go here.

A demo video quickly highlighting what's new in Drupal 7 is hiding after the break.
Continue reading Drupal 7 launches with friendlier UI and simpler installation

Drupal 7 launches with friendlier UI and simpler installation originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 05 Jan 2011 13:30:00 EST.
exfm, previously known as ExtensionFM, is an extension for Google Chrome which allows you to build a library of all the music you discover while surfing the net. You can then listen to the songs you discover from within exfm itself (instead of re-visiting websites) and share your finds on social networks.

Version 2.0.4 of the extension has been made available in the Chrome Web Store, and this version brings a couple of new and interesting features: recommendations and 'infinite scroll'. Recommendations for You has been designed to make it easier to see what tracks the users you follow are enjoying. The Noted tab will now display the songs other users have liked but you haven't noted yet.

Also new is infinite scrolling in list view -- which was previously limited to 50 songs per page. Passwords can now be reset from the settings page and there are many bug fixes and under-the-hood improvements as well.

Google may be prepping to update the user interface of iGoogle, its entry into the personalized home page space. A user noticed the slight change while visiting iGoogle Japan, and sent proof to the Google Operating System Blog.

As for what's new, the rounded corners are gone, and controls are now only shown when you mouse over a gadget. Also, each gadget now gets its own little icon that can be seen to the left of its title.

The new interface is reportedly available only to a limited number of users right now, as is usually the case with Google's UI experiments. Whether or not this is going to get pushed to all iGoogle users at some point remains to be seen. It could undergo some further tweaking before that happens though, or it could be scrapped altogether. Only time will tell.

iGoogle may be getting an updated interface originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 29 Dec 2010 14:30:00 EST. At its peak, over 26.7 million households accessed the Internet via AOL, a figure that no American ISP has ever surpassed. That success came at a cost, though: those CDs (and floppy disks!) that arrived in your letterbox, often on a weekly basis, cost AOL over $300 million.

The data comes from Quora, a service that is fast becoming the go-to place for juicy, 'insider' information. Someone asked about AOL's distribution costs, and in mere moments, both the CEO-at-the-time, Steve Case, and the former Chief Marketing Officer, Jan Brandt, had chimed in with authoritative responses. Case recalls, that in the hay day of the mid-1990s, AOL was quite content to spend $35 on obtaining a new subscriber. Brandt, responding a little bit later, provided a total cost of "over $300 million," for the distribution of the CDs. She went on to provide a shocking statistic: "At one point, 50% of the CDs produced worldwide had an AOL logo on it." Shocking, but... sadly rather believable.
AOL spent more than $300 million on distributing free sign-up CDs originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 28 Dec 2010 06:00:00 EST. I feel strongly about net neutrality -- and you may have some solid opinions about it, too. But what about your mother or your grandfather? Do they care enough about net neutrality to make a stand, or even understand what the fuss is all about?

The Open Internet is a nice little website that strives to explain the topic with very little text, and lovely vector graphics. It flows from top to bottom, with two main illustrations. The first illustration shows how things are today, with the ISP providing access to a raw "stream" of Internet goodness. The second one shows what things might be like if net neutrality is not guaranteed, with "special packages" offering "premium access" to email, Facebook, YouTube or other services many of us spend significant amounts of time browsing.

The site goes on to explain that ISPs would even be able to block access to certain services entirely so they could offer their own competing services -- a frightening scenario. All in all, it's a very quick and enlightening read and it sure beats having to explain the subject over and over again...
The Open Internet teaches net neutrality to everyone originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 14:30:00 EST.
With so many types of Internet threats to watch out for nowadays, it's important to have a multi-layered defense in place. A good antimalware program is a start, but it won't protect you against everything -- like some zero-day exploits such as the new one reported by Microsoft which affects Internet Explorer.

Trend Micro's Browser Guard offers additional protection for users of Microsoft's Web browser, and best of all it's totally free. Install Browser Guard and it resides in your system tray and integrates into Internet Explorer, where it scans for malicious Web code. Browser Guard taps into Trend's Smart Protection Network, which uses the power of their antimalware cloud to defend against emerging threats. The plug-in won't slow down your browser, but it will add a toolbar (which really isn't necessary). Still, giving up a few pixels of space in exchange for some added protection is a decent trade off if you're a devoted Internet Explorer user.
If you were lost without your Skype connection yesterday, the company's official blog has some heartening news for you this morning. Skype's engineers have been working hard to re-build the network of supernodes -- which had failed due to a software bug -- and have started seeing some encouraging signs.

Users in various locations have been able to sign in again, and Skype reports that around 5 million users are current connected. That's less than a third of what they normally see, but it's certainly better than hearing crickets. Skype isn't sure when the service will return to full capacity, so we'll just have to wait patiently.

You may also still have trouble accessing the Skype website -- either all its Web services have been affected, or the servers are simply being hammered with user requests.

Update: the Skype blog now reports that the number of connected users has doubled -- 10 million people are back online!
Skype slowly beginning to recover from massive outage originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 08:30:00 EST. Microsoft has posted a new security bulletin which describes a critical flaw in Internet Explorer which -- wait for it -- could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on a compromised computer. The flaw affects all supported versions of IE and occurs because of "the creation of uninitialized memory during a CSS function within Internet Explorer."

Vista and Windows 7 users are at less risk than those on XP because of their OS's Protected Mode, which would limit the attacker's access rights. Microsoft suggests using EMET (Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit) to protect all Internet Explorer processes -- but it's a tool designed for admins, not the average home user.

While there's no timetable given for an official fix, Microsoft has already begun working with security providers to ensure that additional protection can be delivered via definition updates. They also, of course, recommend running all Windows Updates, making sure your firewall is turned on, and having a good, up-to-date antimalware program installed.
All Internet Explorer versions affected by newly-discovered critical flaw originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 07:30:00 EST. Not any longer -- the Dropbox team has announced that their baby has officially left the nursery, and version 1.0.10 is available for download right now. You may actually have to go to the site to get it -- Dropbox has never been known for auto-updating.

The folks at Dropbox are particularly proud of this release, which they've for some reason dubbed "Rainbow Shell." Most changes will be completely transparent to the average user, but quite a bit of work's been done to the client over the last few months. For starters, the syncing engine's been overhauled to not only sync files faster, but to use up to 50% less memory doing it.

New users should now have an easier time setting up Dropbox, as the initial setup wizard's been redesigned with ease of use in mind. Mac users should be a bit happier with their client too, because it's been rebuilt to use Cocoa only, and looks much more native in OS X.

The one thing that's sure to be noticed by users however, is the addition of selective syncing, which allows you to choose which files or folders will get synced with each computer. That option can be found in the Dropbox preferences, in the advanced section, and it only applies to the system on which the client is installed. That way you can set your netbook to only sync music files, your work computer to grab all your documents, and your home computer to sync everything the other two have to offer.
But for the most part, this release is about heaping piles of bug-fixes, and the Dropbox team is extremely enthusiastic about the amount of problems they've worked out. It's certainly been a tough job to make a file-syncing system that works seamlessly between Windows, Mac and Linux, and that's without adding mobile devices to the mix.
Dropbox hits 1.0, gets lighter, faster, and adds selective syncing originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 07:00:00 EST. This weekend, Gawker Media had its primary database compromised. In this monstrous breach, not only did 1.5 million users have their privacy breached and email address stolen, but they also had their passwords cracked. In a day and age where the currency of our email address and password -- and thus our identity -- is only superseded by our bank details, it's fair to label the Gawker breach as abominable.

Like all major disasters, though, this hack serves a higher purpose: it's now blatantly clear that you should not trust a website with sensitive details about yourself. There have been other hacks, of course; higher profile hacks (like the TJ Maxx debacle), with millions of credit card and social security numbers vanishing into the ether, causing billions of dollars of damage.

But they pale in comparison to the Gawker hack for one reason: it directly affected a huge swathe of the noisy, foot-stomping and petulant tech blogging minority.
Continue reading News flash: everything on the Internet is hackable

News flash: everything on the Internet is hackable originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 17:30:00 EST.

Paper.li, the online app that automatically creates a daily 'newspaper' out of the links shared by the people you follow on Twitter, has added Facebook support. The scope of the Facebook integration isn't yet as broad as with Twitter, partly because of Facebook's more complicated privacy controls.

What you can do right now is create a 'newspaper' based on a public search term, like "WikiLeaks news on Facebook" (a screenshot of which you can see in the image above). Paper.li takes the results it gets from Facebook for any search term, analyzes them, extracts all links, videos and photos, ranks them, and then creates the paper in a very similar fashion to what they do for Twitter hashtags.

Papers based on individual Facebook accounts are in the works, but (again thanks to Facebook's privacy structure) they will only be viewable by the respective account holders. Paper.li is also looking into the possibility of creating papers based on Facebook groups in the future, but it's not known at this point whether these will ever materialize.

Paper.li adds Facebook support, now lets you create newspapers out of Facebook searches originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 15:00:00 EST.
The Federal Trade Commission issued a report yesterday outlining what it feels must be done to ensure the privacy of the average netizen. Key points of the initiative include making consumers much more aware of what they're agreeing to when it comes to their privacy, and instituting a "Do Not Track" scheme that could use cookies to ward off other cookies.

The first thing they want to change is the dreaded Terms of Service. By making the average TOS short and simple, as opposed the much-maligned wall of text that we've become so accustomed to these days, the FTC hopes that consumers will actually read the text to which they're agreeing. The flip side of that coin is that the FTC also wants to alleviate some of the pressure that's been put on large companies -- like Google and Facebook -- by making it official that they "should not have to seek consent for certain commonly accepted practices."

That sounds like common sense to me, but there's one small problem: What we consider commonly accepted practices today is a far cry from what was commonly accepted 5 years ago, and it's not difficult to imagine how slippery that slope could get in the next decade.

So, simplifying the issue of privacy is a good start, but what about policing it? The FTC thinks that a "Do Not Track" mechanism should be put in place to keep people who opt out of targeting marketing out. The idea they've floated is to use persistent cookies to ensure that users are always recognized as opt-outs when the targeted-advertising cookies come their way. Sounds simple enough.

Now, if only there were a cookie that could do something about the irony of using a persistent, government-backed cookie to stop the persistent, corporate-marketing cookies.

FTC wants to fight cookies with cookies in new "Do Not Track" scheme originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 02 Dec 2010 13:00:00 EST. The most recent build of IE9 -- beta 2 -- leaked onto the Web late last night. Judging by the version number and its performance, it looks like it features the same rendering and JavaScript engines found in Platform Preview 7.

As reported by WinRumors, there doesn't seem to be any significant change to the user interface. The download manager shows your current download speed without the need to mouse-over, but that's about it. It's now fairly safe to assume that Microsoft hasn't got any secret plans up its sleeve -- the UI you see now is almost certainly the real deal. If the final launch is in January, we can expect to see one more platform update in about 5 weeks, and then a final release towards the end of January.

I'm not going to give you a link to the IE9 beta 2 installer, but you can probably find it with a little searching on Twitter or Google. The installer is legit -- it's signed by Microsoft -- so you don't need to worry about malware of any variety.
Internet Explorer 9 beta 2 leaks, looks ready for launch originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 23 Nov 2010 07:02:00 EST.
Along with pornography, it seems that online egg timers are a driving force for change and innovation on the Internet. I'm not sure there's any other way to explain the proliferation of egg timers. Granted, people may be using these timers for more than just eggs, but this burgeoning market segment never ceases to amaze and surprise me. My latest find is simply called Online Egg Timer, which is a great name for SEO.

The interface is dead-simple and very friendly, and it sports a friendly URL format as well. You can just go to www.online-eggtimer.com/90/120/240 to instantly start three timers: one for ninety seconds, one for two minutes, and one for four minutes.

Granted, the URL format could have been a tad friendlier if it allowed for other time units too, like CD allows for /2h4m15s. But Online Egg Timer does have one alarming advantage over CD: it emits a very loud ringing sound once the time is up.

Online Egg Timer is another slick, stylish timer originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 20 Nov 2010 09:00:00 EST.
Once again, don't get your hopes up too much if you see the orange-yellow dot on your Google Chrome wrench icon today -- there are updates for both the Beta and Dev channels, but most of the changes aren't forward-facing. There are, however, some behind-the-scenes updates that are worth knowing about.

On the Beta Channel, several Web Store related fixes were pushed. Access to Chrome's private Web Store APIs has been made more secure, and a histogram has been added which tracks Chrome's built-in promo for the Web Store. Events such as launching an app, clicking through to the Web Store, or manually closing the promo will be logged.

Dev Channel users, brace yourselves: print preview is getting really close now! If you've got the feature enabled in about:flags, pressing Ctrl+P will now actually cause the print preview page to display. It's still not functional, but you will see the in-tab preview page appear and a list of your installed printers -- but the Chrome print dialog will also appear. Cancel the dialog, and you'll get the something went wrong alert.

The Chrome Task Manager has also been updated (image after the break) and now displays Chrome processes in two groups: apps and extensions, and browser and plug-ins. Sandboxed Flash -- which debuted in Canary recently -- has also arrived for Windows Dev channel users. Google Instant integration has also been tweaked, and now plays nicely with extensions which have keywords hooked into the Omnibox.

20 Things I Learned About Browsers And The Web is a beautiful and educational example of what we can expect from the HTML5 Web. It was developed by the Google Chrome team to showcase both the power of its browser, and of HTML5 itself.

20 Things is fully illustrated, too, and on each page a cheesy subtitle or piece of poetry awaits. Put simply, it's a delight. If you're a hardened Web expert, spend a few minutes leafing through it to enjoy the HTML5esque features -- the offline storage, the page-turning, flipping the light switch in the bottom-right corner -- and then send the link to a friend or family member. Check the Google announcement if you want more details.

It's a damn sight better than Google's last attempt at an HTML5 showpiece, that's for sure. At least this one actually works with Firefox and Internet Explorer 9! It's a little bit slow with Opera, but there should be a hardware-accelerated beta version of Opera 11 any day now...
Google's beautiful HTML5 guide to the Web originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 08:00:00 EST.
Gravity, a new company set up by three former MySpace executives, has just had its public launch at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. The company's rather ambitious goal is to become the "Pandora of the Web," able to bring you the content it thinks you might be interested in based on your interests. To gauge what you might like to view, Gravity proposes to use your public social network feeds in order to create an "interest graph" and, from there, use a language model currently consisting of 100 million (!) phrases to distinguish how things fit together. For instance, "free throw" relates to "basketball," which in turn, relates to "sport" -- meaning you might like content revolving around sport.

First out the gate for Gravity is Twinterest, a product that can build-out an interest graph based on your tweets and then compare it with your friends. The Orbit, a personalized "Web newspaper" is also on the way, hoping to truly demonstrate Gravity's "this is what you might like" technology. The end game for Gravity, however, seems to be in the website personalization space, with the idea that you can land on your favorite site and hit a "personalization" button, which will bring highlighted content to the front, based on what you're likely to be interested in.

Interesting stuff, with serious potential, but other companies have been and gone attempting to do this kind of thing. Based on solid technology, but fighting an uphill battle for SEO against the force of nature, Gravity has a shot at making this work and has $10 million of venture capital behind them to do it. In the short-term, if you want to check out your "interest graph," then head on over to Gravity.com and check out Twinterest.
Gravity attempts to be the Pandora of the Web originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 11:30:00 EST. Yahoo has just launched Mafia Wars and FishVille, two games developed by Zynga, the company best known for FarmVille and its other games on the Facebook platform. In the past few months though, Zynga has shifted away from being tied exclusively to Facebook and has launched its games on Windows Live Messenger, MSN Games -- and now Yahoo.

Mafia Wars and FishVille will appear in Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Games, My Yahoo, Yahoo Pulse and Yahoo's browser toolbar. Starting the Zynga integration with just two games -- and not the most popular ones (where's FarmVille?) -- clearly means that Yahoo is in sort of a testing phase. If all goes well, expect to see more Zynga titles on Yahoo's properties soon.

The folks behind Pioneer One have been busy since the show's pilot release back in June, and it seems as though their hard work is beginning to pay off. The pilot was a campy success, having won Best Drama Pilot at the New York Television Festival -- but it won instant pseudo-historical status as well. It was the first science fiction drama series to be produced entirely off of donation-funding and released freely through torrent networks. Hundreds of thousands of views and five months later, the made-for-torrent drama series is set to move forward with the release of three new episodes, starting as early as mid-December.

Viewers can also expect to see a revised re-release of the pilot, in which one of the main roles has been recast. The upcoming episodes will comprise about half the expected first season -- of a projected four-season offering should the show's success continue. On that note, it's important to remember that Pioneer One, along with other free P2P community offerings like it, are only made possible by donations. So don't be afraid to donate if you like it, and be sure to catch the teaser trailer for the upcoming episodes after the break.

Continue reading Torrent-loving sci-fi drama Pioneer One landing soon with new episodes

Torrent-loving sci-fi drama Pioneer One landing soon with new episodes originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 10:30:00 EST. Apparently, it all started with a tweet from an "anonymous New York fashion PR", according to Frockwriter. That tweet was the cause for a lot of coverage in itself, until it was made public that many people in the fashion world had been invited to a Google party called "High Tech Fuses with High Fashion", that will take place on Wednesday. That certainly seems to confirm that Google is working on something fashion-related.

The word is that Google will launch Boutiques.com, a fashion site that will use image-recognition technology that Google got its hands on back when it acquired Like.com. Boutiques.com will apparently feature online shops selling merchandise from many designers and retailers, and will also sell the looks worn by celebrities and influencers.

Gizmodo has uncovered that Boutiques.com is owned by Like.com (also owned by Google) and this may be another small confirmation of the above being true. It would clearly make sense for Google to get into fashion e-commerce, because there's plenty of money to be made there. Whether or not that is what Google is doing, we're bound to know for sure in just a couple of days.

Boutiques.com, Google's fashion shopping site, may launch on Wednesday originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 14:00:00 EST.
The MiniBar will let you check-in to your favorite websites as you visit them, optionally attaching individual pages and comments as you see fit. You can also share your check-ins on Twitter or Facebook, should you so wish, but Meebo will include a "friends feed" that'll show you what your friends have been visiting and sharing. There is, however, no game mechanic like that of Foursquare; the aim of the MiniBar is purely the discovery and sharing of websites, which is something that Twitter is currently used for. The MiniBar itself is a Meebo.com-served solution. It's essentially an extension that doesn't install any software on your system. As a consequence, the MiniBar will be available to Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer users in much the same way that the Meebo Bar is. The similarities don't stop there either -- the MiniBar also has chat features and other functions that are available on the Meebo Bar. Meebo's also rolling out "Profile pages," which will keep track of your check-ins and those of your friends, similar to most other profile systems in other social networks.

The extension is due to go live Tuesday for your check-in pleasure, with the MiniBar functionality eventually ending up in the main Meebo Bar once all the kinks have been worked out.
Meebo gets into the website "check-in" game with the MiniBar originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 10:30:00 EST. For $24.99, it will let you share your Android device's data connection with your computer via USB. Unlike Google's free Android tethering app, Tether works on Android 1.5 and up (the built-in app started with Android 2.2).

Now, to readers outside the US, Tether may sound like a ripoff. American cell carriers are notorious for blocking tethering and charging huge fees to enable it. Witness AT&T's $25/month fee for tethering on the iPhone. Now Tether's one-time pricetag of $25 doesn't sound so high, especially when the carriers can't arbitrarily disable it, they way they can with Google's native tethering app.

If Tether sounds good to you, but you want to try before you buy, there's a free one-week demo. Also, if you see the $49.99 price anywhere on the Tether site, that's a mistake: the Blackberry version, which also includes tethering via Wi-Fi, is $49.99. The price for the Android version will show up as $24.99 when you add it to your cart.
The module can be seen on the right side of the Top News, My News and Upcoming pages on Digg. Right now it shows five stories at a time, with one of them being highlighted as a Hot Story. The new section will also allow Digg to aggregate stories on a particular topic.

Unlike the rest of Digg, where users control the stories' performance by casting their votes to either 'digg' or 'bury' them, the Breaking News section will be curated by Digg staff, in an effort to showcase important news as quickly as possible.

The new feature is already live on Digg.com.
Digg now has a staff-picked Breaking News section originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 16:00:00 EST.
FluffyApp for Windows is a terrifically easy way to share screenshots and files online. Since it arrived with its CloudApp-for-Windows goodness, developer Richard Wang has been busy adding new features -- including several incredibly useful ones in version 0.8.7 and 0.8.8.

For starters, FluffyApp now supports region selections, so you're no longer limited to full-desktop or program-window screenshots. The hotkey combination can now be tweaked as well, in case you don't want FluffyApp handling things every time you hit Prt Scrn. Wang has also beefed up the FluffyApp system tray menu. You can now rename files, copy BBCode, make URLs public, and delete items all from the comfort of your tray.
