Have you ever thought your Facebook status updates lacked finesse? Ever regretted saying that to the whole of Facebook about 30 seconds after hitting send? Ever wished you had your own personal Leonard Nimoy to proof read your mind-dumps before you make a fool of yourself? Yes, me too, and now you can!

Brought to you by Telus, What Would Leonard Nimoy Say (WWLNS) is a Facebook app, which allows you to run your status updates past the legendary sci-fi actor before slapping them up on Facebook. To use the app you must 'Like' it, and sacrifice your https connection if you happen to have it enabled, but that's the price you pay to have Spock proof read your inane musings.

Check out Telus on Facebook to take the app for a whirl, and jump on over to Engadget to see more Nimoy-Telus combinations.
Telus recruits Leonard Nimoy to vet your Facebook status updates originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 08 Apr 2011 03:40:00 EST.
Places now lets you see locations using an integrated Google map, so that you can scope out where your friends have checked into and the surrounding area; handy if you're meant to be meeting your friend at a bar, but are running late, have no idea where it is, and they've already checked-in there. Speaking of checking-in you can now also check-in to Events you happen to be attending, which seems a logical inclusion.

Unfriending people works as you might expect. Select a friend, hit the do more button and choose to add them as a favorite, send them a message, poke them, or unfriend them! No more will you have to wait till you get back to your desktop to remove the scourge that just slighted you. Just be careful you don't hit the Unfriend button when you're aiming to give them a quick poke.

Facebook also made some minor updates to the News Feed and Notifications UI, which now includes profile pictures next to notification items.

Jump on over to the App Store to pick up the free update, or hit the 'check for updates' button in iTunes.
Facebook iPhone app gains Map View for Places, Unfriend and Event check-ins originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 04:30:00 EST. And there are a lot of those -- a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won't be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook's developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they're using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn't, you won't be seeing much of Facebook Places -- which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You can see the three different versions of the share button below, courtesy our friends at TechCrunch.
Security company BitDefender -- which recently released the Safego app to protect your Facebook account -- has put together an infographic illustrating information about the state of scams on the social networking site.

At an impressive 7,532 pixels tall, the graphic offers plenty of insight into the dark underbelly of Facebook. The company found profile insight apps -- like those which promise to show you who's viewing your page and who deleted you -- to be the most widespread scam. BitDefender estimates that this particular type of scam has generated more than 1.4 million clickthroughs. Facebook's popular social games are a common trap as well, but are in a distant second, with less than half the clickthroughs.

Somewhat surprisingly, shocking image and video posts came in at number three on the list. We've seen so many of this type of scam appear in our security feeds that we thought they'd be the most common.
Top Facebook scams revealed by BitDefender (infographic) originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 09:00:00 EST. As our mobile communications have evolved over the past few years, so have the messaging services that we've turned to, connecting us to our friends, families and colleagues. Instant communication has never been easier. Your favorite instant messaging protocols like AIM, Gtalk, and MSN Messenger, aren't fixed to the desktop anymore and can be taken on the road with the soon-ubiquitous smartphone. But that hasn't stopped the proliferation of alternative messaging systems, with the likes of BlackBerry Messenger and a plethora of copycats taking center stage.

The next big thing in mobile communications seems to be group messaging, and that's no real surprise. If we take a look at the currently entrenched communication platforms, not many of them do more than messaging one-to-one or one-to-a-few well. Sure you can have group chats using traditional IM protocols, but they are inherently transitory.
Continue reading Group messaging: the next big thing?

Group messaging: the next big thing? originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 13:30:00 EST. Snaptu had been hand-picked by Facebook to develop its non-smartphone app, and the acquisition means Snaptu will now be part of the internal team. Snaptu's reach goes beyond Facebook, of course: the company's mobile app also integrates with Twitter, Picasa, LinkedIn, and other services like RSS.

Snaptu's Facebook app works with more than 2,500 handsets. Delivering a powerful, easy-to-use app to the millions of mobile users worldwide who don't own a smartphone is critical if Facebook wishes to make itself as ubiquitous and accessible as possible.
Facebook acquires Snaptu to bolster 'dumb phone' mobile apps originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 08:45:00 EST. Highlights include, an improved News Feed, which now lets you scroll through your feed a little easier, and removes the problem of accidental 'Like' clicking. You can now post photos to your Wall, check into Facebook Places and update things, all directly from your News Feed.

The new UI update brings the BlackBerry Facebook app more into line with its iOS cousin feature-wise, with access to the usual profile information including Wall, Info, Photos, and Pages. A drop-down navigation bar has also been implemented, replacing the static nav bar, and is scalable 'to support new features in the future.' The notifications bar has also been given a bit of polish with a BB OS 6 'Today View'-style notification break down page.

Probably the biggest addition, however, has to be the integrated Facebook Chat, which now lets you chat from the Facebook app itself, or the BlackBerry unified mailbox. You'll even get messages with the Facebook app closed as long as you've got your status set to online.

Facebook for BlackBerry 2.0 beta can be downloaded from the BlackBerry Beta Zone (registration required) with limited slots up for grabs. The app is currently only available for devices running OS 6, but future beta releases will push support down to devices running BB OS 4.6 and higher.
Facebook for BlackBerry 2.0 beta now available for download for OS 6 devices originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 05:30:00 EST. Facebook recently rolled out an update to its commenting system. Now, instead of pressing Comment, you simply press the Enter key to save a comment. More excitingly, however, Facebook silently rolled out another new feature at the same time: you can now edit comments!

If you comment on a friend's status update, link or photo, you can now press the 'X' in the top right corner to edit it. Your comment instantly turns into a text box where you can alter what you've written; then just press Enter to save it again.

There are some caveats, though! First, if someone comments after you, your comment is locked; you can still delete it, but you can't edit. Second, there seems to be some kind of time limit on editing. The editing window might be as short as 60 seconds. Still, for those of you that have 'accidentally' submitted comments by pressing Enter, the ability to edit is a godsend.

It's also worth noting that everyone still gets email (and SMS!) notifications when you comment, and when you edit comments.

Changes for the app's handling of images include users now being able to upload photos to their friends' walls and also to groups. Photos are now supposed to always maintain their correct orientation when uploaded, but that won't help the people who are notorious for knocked-over portraits (we all know one).

As for the bolstered usage of SSL, it wouldn't normally be a big deal. You may, nowever, remember recent rumblings about the app sending huge amounts of data in the clear. That news caused plenty of users to be more than slightly perturbed -- and rightly so, given the importance of a secure connection in the world of social networking. It's good to see the devs at Facebook working to correct this problem, but nothing's really final until the updated app has been run over a packet-sniffed network.

Now the bad news. Within an hour of the update's release, over 10 pages of shriekingly bad reviews were posted, reporting that images (which were supposed to be a plus) weren't showing up at all, and that the app was crashing almost immediately upon opening it. Several reviewers noted that they were using older versions of Android, so it could simply be an issue of OS fragmentation since it works for me on Gingerbread (2.3.3).

So, as usual, buyer beware, and if you're not scared off by the reviews then you can grab the update at the Android Market.
Facebook for Android update improves images, security (in theory) originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 12:00:00 EST.

Facebook changed its privacy controls a few times in 2010, and while it's now quite easy to block entire groups from seeing your location or contact details, there's no obvious way to hide your recent activities.

Recent activities are everything you do on Facebook, from commenting on a friend's wall to posting photos or changing your relationship status. If a friend visits your profile they can see all of your actions -- a humbling thought, eh? -- unless they don't have permission.

Put simply, the only way to prevent people from seeing "John Lonelypants is now single" on their News Feed is to change your privacy settings so that your current relationship is hidden from your friends. This in turn makes any relationship-related status changes invisible.

Likewise, the only way to prevent other people from seeing which things you 'like' is to prevent them from seeing all of your likes and interests. It's either one way or the other with Facebook's current privacy model.

To begin, click Account in the top right corner, and then Privacy Settings -- or click this link.
Continue reading How to prevent people from seeing your recent activity on Facebook

How to prevent people from seeing your recent activity on Facebook originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 14 Mar 2011 17:00:00 EST. A while back, Facebook introduced Twitter-esque @ tagging, allowing users to mention specific people in posts and status messages. Now Facebook has expanded that same functionality to include comments. The update also provides users with a notification when someone tags them, the same way Facebook notifies you about -- well, about nearly everything.

There's also a benefit for Facebook Page admins. Pages you mention this way are always displayed, making them immune to Facebook's spam filters which sometimes cause regular URLs to be discarded.
Facebook expands @ mention tagging to comments originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 17:05:00 EST. No, despite what you may have heard on Facebook and Twitter, Charlie Sheen is not yet dead.

With the eye-catching title of "RIP! Charlie Sheen found Dead at his House," a massive clickjacking hoax is doing the rounds on Facebook and Twitter. Clicking the link will take you to a fake YouTube page -- and if you click anywhere on the page, the hoax will infect your Facebook profile and begin sharing the link to your friends.

You are then asked to complete a survey (why does anyone complete these surveys?) Finally, to consummate the malware trifecta, some users are reporting that malware is downloaded to your computer.

If you've fallen prey to this drug-and-porn media orgy and clicked the "RIP!" link, head to Account > Privacy Settings > Edit your settings (bottom left). Alternatively, click this link to go straight to your app settings. From there, revoke any applications that look spammy (they'll be at the top of the list).

You should also update and run your antivirus/anti-malware software to clean up any residual mess.

Finally, to protect yourself from future scams, you really should follow FaceCrooks, which is dedicated to uncovering and publicizing the latest Facebook scams.
Charlie Sheen death hoax spreads malware on Facebook and Twitter originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 07:30:00 EST.

By default, Facebook uses a magical algorithm called EdgeRank to decide what makes it to your News Feed, and what falls by the wayside. Lots of factors affect what ultimately appears in your News Feed, but mostly it's determined by a) things you've explicitly signed up for ('liking' pages), and b) updates from friends that you regularly interact with.

But what if you're bored of reading dull updates from distant cousins, or emotastic posts from eyelinered types that seem to spend 90% of their time whining on Facebook? Or maybe you're friends with someone on Facebook and a follower on Twitter and you don't want to see every status update in double.

Fortunately, it's as simple as hovering over an item in your News Feed, clicking the X that appears in the top right corner, and then clicking Hide all by X. Updates from that person or page will no longer appear in your News Feed.

But what if you want to disable the EdgeRank entirely, and simply show all activity by friends and pages in your News Feed?
Continue reading How to customize exactly what appears in your Facebook News Feed

How to customize exactly what appears in your Facebook News Feed originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 10 Mar 2011 14:00:00 EST.

In November 2010, RockMelt launched the private beta of its social Web browser. The app features tight Facebook integration and offers plenty of social networking conveniences for its users. Now RockMelt has entered open beta testing, and the app is available for download by anyone who wants to kick the tires.

Like Flock, RockMelt offers at least one feature we really like: a master login. If you choose not to have RockMelt log in to your Facebook account automatically, you're prompted for your email address and password each time to launch the browser. Preferences like bookmarks aren't shared across accounts, either -- each Facebook ID gets its own unique browser profile.

If you're using a private computer which you can secure with a standard OS password, RockMelt offers a new QuickLaunch mode which will automatically sign you in to your Facebook account whenever you fire up the app. A new YouTube app has also been added, and it's a nice way to browse through some videos without leaving your current tab.

RockMelt's Chromium base has been bumped from version 6 to 9, which brings a whole slew of performance, security, and other improvements. Those of you who use Facebook frequently and think quick access to its communication tools might be handy should definitely give the new RockMelt a try.

This week's set of tech tips are all about the most popular website in the world: Facebook. For more tips, check our tips index!

Facebook, despite the blogosphere's perpetual bickering, actually has good, granular privacy controls. You can control exactly who can see each section of your profile, and easily block specific people from even finding your profile.

One lesser-known feature, however, is that you can control who can read each and every one of your status updates. You've probably seen the padblock below the status update box, but if you click it, and then Customize, you can block specific people from reading your update!

Maybe you're not quite ready to unfriend someone, or perhaps you're simply trying to arrange a surprise birthday party for one of your friends -- either way, it's a great little feature. As a commenter points out, it's also rather handy if you want to block family members from reading... sensitive... things.

Now, if only you could control who could read your posts on your friends' pages...
How to block specific friends from reading a Facebook status update originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 09 Mar 2011 16:15:00 EST. Warner Bros., finding yet another corner piece of the Social Networking Jigsaw, has begun renting movies on Facebook for 30 Facebook Credits, or $3.

The films are packaged as apps -- like FarmVille and CityVille -- but it really is as simple as heading to a page, using 30 Credits, and watching the movie. You can watch the movie as many times as you like for 48 hours, after which the rental terminates. You can stop and start the movie whenever you like, too.

Facebook Credits, if they somehow passed you by (there must be a few people who don't play FarmVille, right?) are Facebook's new all-encompassing currency. Every virtual good transaction (such as in-app purchases, or renting a movie) must use Facebook Credits. Facebook, like Apple, takes a 30% cut of all purchases with Credits.

For now, the only movie available to rent on Facebook is Batman: The Dark Knight, but more should begin to appear soon. If you 'Like' a movie, you should see a status update when it becomes available to rent (see the Dark Knight page for an example).
Warner Bros. renting movies on Facebook for $3 originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 08:15:00 EST. The phenomenally successful Angry Birds is heading to the world's largest social network. Yep that's right, productivity is going to take a massive hit, because Rovio is bringing Angry Birds to Facebook.

Move over Farmville, there's a new Facebook-game obsession coming into town. According to All Facebook the game as heading to the social network within a month, while the official Facebook page is requesting Likes for further information. As of writing, over 1.3 million people have given Angry Birds the thumbs up.

Rovio's CEO Mikael Hed recently said that Angry Birds on Facebook would give the pigs a more prominent role, with "completely new aspects that haven't been experienced on any other platform." Exciting news for Angry Birds addicts indeed, but your Facebook news feed is likely to take a beating in the near future as Angry Bird blasts updates out as all your friends start battering those dastardly pigs.
Angry Birds landing on Facebook in under a month originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 07 Mar 2011 03:30:00 EST. Facebook has snatched up Beluga, one of the most popular group messaging services around. We recently mentioned Beluga in our round-up of cross-platform BlackBerry messenger alternatives, and it's been growing steadily in popularity ever since it launched just a few short months ago.

In its official announcement, Facebook says it is "excited that the [Beluga] team will continue their vision for groups and mobile communication as part of Facebook." Beluga will continue to operate normally for now, and Facebook has promised to reveal more about its plans for the service in the coming months.
Facebook reels in Beluga to bolster group messaging originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 11:00:00 EST. Facebook's native app for BlackBerry is about to receive a major overhaul. Version 2.0 of the app is coming soon and will bring it on par with Facebook's apps for iOS and Android.

A few screenshots of the new version have surfaced, and they show that the app will have built-in support for Facebook Chat and its user interface will be completely revamped. You will also be able to view friends lists, profile information, and pages straight from within the app.

Facebook 2.0 for BlackBerry is set to come out in beta form at some point in March, while the final version will be released in May.
Facebook 2.0 for BlackBerry coming soon, adds chat and improved looks originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 15:15:00 EST.

Facebook's 'Like' button has been a real success story for the social-networking giant. It's been spreading across the Internet like wildfire, with users 'Liking' everything from news articles to gourmet recipes. Now the Like button looks set to replace the Facebook 'Share' button, publishing full feed stories to users walls complete with headline, blurb and thumbnail.

Previously the Like button just published a link to the story to the user's profile, but now you can even comment directly on the story at the time of posting. This marks the biggest change to the iconic Like button yet, with Facebook using it as its Trojan horse onto every platform imaginable.

While some users are complaining that the Like button and the Share button fulfill distinct roles -- you might want to share a story about a government regime firing on unarmed protesters, but you certainly don't want to 'Like' it -- whether you like it or not, the Share button seems to be going the way of the dodo, having already been removed from the Facebook Developers page.
Facebook 'Like' button replacing 'Share,' world domination next originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 04:15:00 EST. Professor Dan Wallach and his students set up simple sniffers using freely-available software (including Wireshark and Mallory) and found that Facebook for Android sends a lot of data in the clear. That means it's possible -- easy, even -- for people to eavesdrop on your Facebook postings.

Even more troubling is Wallach's finding that the lack of OAuth or another signature method in Facebook for Android means someone could theoretically post to your Facebook account. There's also a possible SQL injection vulnerability which could cause all kinds of trouble.

To protect yourself from potential exploits, you can sign into the secure version of Facebook's site -- https://www.facebook.com -- and get a third-party encryption app that will let you use the secure site by default. Hopefully Facebook will quickly address these issues and release an updated, more secure version of the Android app.
Facebook for Android vulnerable to simple snooping tricks originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 15:00:00 EST. Vivox offers a Facebook app which allows you to voice chat with your friends as you browse the site from your desktop, but what about while you're out and about? A mobile option would be nice, too. That's what the developers at Crisp App think, too, and its iPhone app lets you do just that.

Grab Facebook Messenger for $2.99 in the App Store, and you'll have a convenient way to voice chat with your Facebook friends on-the-go. Select a friend's name from your contact list, tap the call button, and they'll receive a link to complete the connection in their current Facebook tab. Once your friend clicks through, your VoIP chat session is ready to go. GigaOm reports a slight delay on both the desktop and iPhone app, but overall reviews are very positive so far.

Ladies and gentlemen, there is now a sure-fire way to capitalize on the freshly dumped. Netizens, Facebookers and geeks: take heed! No longer must you pore through your friends list looking for easy rebound relationships. With Breakup Notifier, simply select friends who, in your opinion should be in your bed rather than someone else's, and you'll receive an email when (if?) they become single.

Speaking on behalf of romantics everywhere, the service is depressingly simple to use. Seriously, it's a 3-step process -- and to be honest, it kind of takes all of the effort (read: romance) out of Facebook-stalking your crushes. Anyone who has successfully chatted up a boy or girl online will know that timing is by far the most important factor, and with Breakup Notifier in your arsenal, rebound hook-ups are an easy, foregone conclusion.

Breakup Notifier is free for now -- but considering Facebook historically bans 'who defriended me?' apps, it might not be around long enough to make the developer any money. Better strike while the iron's hot, eh?
Facebook Breakup Notifier: this is 21st century romance originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 22 Feb 2011 06:05:00 EST. Before Apple introduced Game Center, iOS gamers got their scores and rankings fix from OpenFeint. Don't count OpenFeint out, though: the company now boasts 65 million users, and it's about to launch a cross-platform service called OpenFeint Connect that will let gamers on iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, OS X and Windows compare scores. Even Facebook games could potentially connect to OpenFeint. This move makes a ton of sense, considering the way successful iOS games like Angry Birds have been ported to Android, Mac and Windows.

OpenFeint Connect is in private beta now, allowing developers on any platform to tap into OpenFeint's APIs for social gaming. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean cross-platform simultaneous play, but does mean that game devs will be able to push news and updates to all their players at once, and players will be able to compete for high scores against their friends on other platforms.
OpenFeint announces OpenFeint Connect cross-platform gaming API originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 17 Feb 2011 13:30:00 EST. Facebook has overhauled Facebook Pages for 2011, so you should be noticing a new look and some new features. If you're a Facebook page admin, you've also got some work to do. On March 10, everyone will be upgraded to the new version of Facebook Pages, but page admins can preview the new layout now, and opt in early.

Here's what the new Facebook Pages has to offer:

Notifications: You'll can now get Facebook notifications and email notifications when fans post or like something on your page.

Use Facebook as your page: Pages now work a lot more like personal accounts. You can like other people's posts and post on walls and other pages as your page. Each page will also have get a news feed, and mutual friends and interests will appear to anyone who views a page while logged in.

Left-side Tab Bar: Navigation has moved to the left side of the page, and admins can use the sidebar to feature specific admins of the page, or to feature other, related pages.

"Everyone" Wall Filter: People viewing a page will be able to view posts by that page or posts by everyone, and the new smart filter will push the most interesting stories to the top. Admins can also sort posts by most recent and see hidden posts.

Featured Photos: Like individual Facebook accounts, Facebook Pages now feature their five most recently published photos at the top of the page.

You should see the new layout popping up all over the place in the next couple of days, as page admins start upgrading.
If you're posting about it on Facebook, there's a chance your words could wind up used by advertisers without your knowledge. Facebook has begun allowing companies to re-post endorsements from users as "Sponsored Stories," and there's no way for you to opt out at the moment.

It's not all bad, though. Sponsored Stories retain the same privacy settings that applied to your original post. That means if you only allow friends to see it, they're the only people who will see the Sponsored Story in Facebook's sidebar. The Electronic Privacy Information Center (we see what they did there) isn't happy about this, telling the Associated Press that the ads are "subtle and misleading" and that users should object to companies trying to profit from their "name or likeness without[...]consent."

There's a good chance you already did consent, of course, by agreeing to Facebook's terms of use. But hey, they backpedaled on something like this before -- remember the woman whose husband saw her face used in a "find singles near you" ad? There's a very good chance Facebook will allow users to opt out, especially with the inevitable storm of discontent which is already a-brewin'.
Facebook to let advertisers use your posts in Sponsored Stories originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 08:00:00 EST. Tomorrow, as part of Data Privacy Day, Facebook will enable the option for site-wide HTTPS. Everything, from sending messages to stalking your friends' profiles will be encrypted, which should come as a great relief if you regularly use Facebook from public, unencrypted Wi-Fi networks. To enable it (tomorrow!), navigate to Account Settings and scroll down to Account security.

Facebook will also step up its policing of suspicious activity by using an exciting new form of CAPTCHA called "social authentication." If Facebook detects something odd with your account -- such as a login from two geographically disparate locations -- you will be asked to identify some of your friends. The idea is that hackers might have worked out your password, but they probably don't know what your friends look like. Unless you're being hacked by one of your friends, of course...

Looking forward, Facebook hopes to enable HTTPS by default, but no exact timeline is given. Incidentally, if you want to browse the entire Web while secured by HTTPS, check out our secure surfing guide.
Facebook to enable site-wide HTTPS and name-that-face social authentication originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 07:10:00 EST. CTO Bret Taylor, speaking at the Inside Social Apps conference, said that emphasis will be on HTML5-powered solutions, to maximize impact across all of the smartphone platforms.

Both iOS and Android have Web browsers capable of HTML5. The BlackBerry browser supports some HTML5, and Nokia/Symbian should really have an HTML5-capable browser sometime in 2011. The advantages of developing an HTML5-powered mobile site are clear: not only is there at least 125 million users just waiting to enjoy interactive HTML5 content on their phones, but it would also mean that Facebook could spend its time creating a standards-compliant and cross-platform mobile website, rather than developing individual apps for each of the smartphone platforms.

Don't forget the developers, either: imagine writing an HTML5 app or game that works across every smartphone. It would bring a whole new level of immersion to FarmVille and CityVille players -- you could play it on the train, in the bathroom, or in bed!
Facebook to empower its massive mobile platform with HTML5 originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 26 Jan 2011 06:00:00 EST. Right now, Facebook Credits account for 70% of virtual goods transactions on Facebook, In July, it'll be 100%.

That doesn't mean that the in-game currency for every game is now Facebook Credits, though. Games can still count up gold doubloons, red gems, or anything else they want -- it's just that any exchange of real money for in-game stuff has to use Facebook Credits as the middleman. This is good for customers, because they'll only have to give their credit card info to Facebook, rather than sharing it with new, unfamiliar companies whenever they want to take a chance on a new game.

For developers, it's mostly a good thing, too. Yes, it takes time and money to implement Facebook Credits, but bigtime developers like Zynga (FarmVille, Mafia Wars) and Playfish (Pet Society, Restaurant City) have already switched over, and everyone else has 5 more months to get ready. Once everyone is on the same system, the developers will very likely profit from the new, lower barrier to entry. ("Well, my card's already in the system, and this game seems fun. Might as well drop 5 bucks on some new stuff for my character.")

Ultimately, Facebook Credits could expand outside of Facebook to become the new PayPal. Facebook's already a large company that hundreds of millions of people (sort of) trust with their sensitive data, and an upstart online business without a reputation would benefit from processing through a known commodity like Facebook.
Facebook will require all in-app transactions to use Facebook Credits originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 25 Jan 2011 05:10:00 EST.
Facebook is riding the 'real-time' train hard these days. Following yesterday's release of real-time Insights for page owners, it appears Facebook has now rolled out live commenting. 'Live', as in comments now update in real-time, without the need to refresh the page. Discovered by mistake by developer Jesse Stay, it seems like this only happens on your Feed or Profile pages. Many people have seen this in action on their profiles, but since Facebook has not issued an official announcement of the feature it's unclear whether this is the beginning of a worldwide roll-out, or just a small-time test.

Real-time comments are also available on Friendfeed, a service which Facebook acquired in 2009 and from which it was known to 'borrow' features even before that.

A demo video of the new feature at work is available after the break courtesy of The Next Web.
Continue reading Facebook launches real-time comments

Facebook launches real-time comments originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 21 Jan 2011 12:30:00 EST. The new Facebook for Feature Phones app works on 2,500+ mobile devices from popular manufacturers like Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and LG. It offers an almost smartphone-like Facebook experience, complete with home screen, contact syncing, and fast scrolling.

This new Facebook app will be free of data charges for 90 days on 14 different carriers around the world. For a full list, you can check out Facebook's official blog post on the subject. Facebook for Feature Phones was co-created by Snaptu, and the URL for the new app is http://m.fb.snaptu.com/.

Facebook launches mobile app for feature phones originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 23:00:00 EST. Citing some "useful feedback," Facebook has decided to to make changes "to help ensure you only share this information when you intend to do so."

The feature, which will be re-enabled in a few weeks, will allow Facebook app developers to request both your home address and mobile phone number. The changes being made will hopefully involve a bold, explicit warning in the Request for Permission boxes -- the boxes that you click through to use a new app -- but hopefully there are some better solutions on the table, too.

Ideally, Facebook would give us the option of securing your details permanently, from your Privacy Settings page. There should be a check box that simply says "never give my home address out" -- but that might be a little too hopeful.
Facebook temporarily removes developer access to your home address and mobile number originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 18 Jan 2011 10:42:00 EST. In a rather odd and haphazard move, Facebook has now made it possible for apps to read your home address and mobile telephone number.

In the "Request for Permission" window -- the one you have to accept before using an app on the Facebook platform -- look out for "Access my contact information", with the subtitle "Current Address and Mobile Phone Number" (see image above). You'd think that such important details would deserve a bolder warning, instead of the usual faded gray -- but obviously not.

As Sophos' Naked Security blog points out, making such details available in a landscape that is already packed full of rogue spam and scam applications puts Facebook users at even greater risk. With your full name and home address, identity theft basically becomes a no-brainer -- and can you imagine the SMS spam that awaits the unlucky Facebooker that gives his phone number to the wrong app developer?

Still, even if you're not bothered by this (and you can always remove your home address or mobile number from Facebook), you have wonder what Facebook will do next. Facebook is quickly becoming The One True Internet Hub, and the wealth of data it knows about us is terrifying. If access to incredibly sensitive data can be reduced to a small-font subtitle in a cluttered permission box, it's only a matter of time until you accidentally press "Allow" and fritter away your entire life story to a random rogue developer.
Facebook enables one-click identity theft option for rogue application developers originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 16 Jan 2011 12:26:00 EST. It links into your Facebook account and notifies you of every change to your account -- pokes, messages, friend requests, event invites, etc. -- with a little pop-up toast window on your desktop. The notifications appear in the bottom right of your screen whether you like it or not -- you can't change it to another corner, and you can't change their appearance.

Still, Facebook Desktop works. Beyond notifications, it also lets you publish status updates -- but as you have to go via a tiny system tray icon, and there's no way to set a global hotkey, it's probably easier to just pop open a browser window and update your status normally.

The only problem -- for some people, anyway -- is that Facebook Desktop is an Adobe AIR app. It's advertised as "lightweight", but a 45MB memory footprint for an app that pops up toast windows seems a little on the chunky side. By default it loads on computer start-up, too, which is a bit obnoxious -- you can disable that in the settings, though.

Oh, it also requests a truly insane number of permissions when connecting to your Facebook account (picture after the break). Understandably, it needs to check a lot of things, but it doesn't need permission to publish check-ins, or insight data for my Pages. Heck, why does it even need my name, profile picture and gender?
Continue reading Facebook Desktop brings every notification to Windows and Mac and Linux!

Facebook Desktop brings every notification to Windows and Mac and Linux! originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 15 Jan 2011 06:23:00 EST. If you're a serious Facebook user, you and your friends have posted hundreds of thousands of photos. Pixable's Photofeed is a new Facebook app that shows you which ones you should care about. It ranks photos in categories like "Popular of the week," "Popular of the day," "Top profile pics," and "Best of 2010," using each photo's number of "likes" and comments.

The "popular" categories are pretty straightforward, but Photofeed's best of each year is a bit of a mystery. For 2009 and 2010 it decided to show me childhood photos of a girl I went on one date with. In fact, all of the "best of" photos are coming from 3 of my Facebook friends, and it's not as if their photos have huge numbers of likes and comments -- maybe they're my only friends using Photofeed? There's no info on how Photofeed's "best of" algorithm works.

Aside from the auto-generated albums, Photofeed also occasionally pops up stats about your followers as you browse. You'll learn things like who comments on your photos most often, who you're most often tagged in photos with, and which of your friends upload the most pics. You can also use Photofeed to follow individual friends, so you don't miss their latest photos.

Back in December, Facebook introduced the new profile design, featuring a 'snapshot' of your life at the top, a heavy focus on recent pictures of you, the ability to highlight 'Featured Friends', and many other enhancements. For the past month or so, the new profile has been opt-in, meaning that if for some reason you didn't like its layout, you could choose to stay with the old profile.

That option will not be available for much longer, since Facebook has announced that it has started rolling out the new profile to all of its users, and there's not going to be an option to stick with the old layout. So, in the following weeks, whether you like it or not, you will get the new Facebook profile that Sam described in detail last month.

Once you get the new profile, you'll be able to take a quick tour, by clicking a link at the top of your profile page. More information about the new profile is available here, and a demo video is waiting for you after the break.

Continue reading New Facebook profiles rolling out to everyone, whether you like it or not

New Facebook profiles rolling out to everyone, whether you like it or not originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 11 Jan 2011 09:30:00 EST. Facebook has a massive userbase -- somewhere between 500 and 600 million users at the moment. The vast majority of those people are average users, who aren't as aware of the dangers lurking on Facebook as more security-minded types. That makes it a very juicy target for scammers and malware distributors, and they're not shy about trying to take advantage of unsuspecting users.

Viral scams are all over Facebook, but they can be hard to avoid if you don't know what you're looking for. If you've got friends and family members who could use a little extra help, send them over to FaceCrooks.com -- a blog which keeps tabs on scams which are spreading on the social networking site. Knowing which "OMG! Watch this video!" posts actually came from friends and which ones are the results of a scam is an important step in protecting your privacy and data on Facebook, after all.
Today the U.S. House of Representatives will be transitioning over to Republican control. To mark the event, the first speech by new House Speaker, congressman John Boehner, will be streamed live on the Pledge to America Facebook page.

You will be able to watch the proceedings live even if you don't have a Facebook account - the page is open and accessible to all, as befitting a democracy. Still, if for some reason you simply don't like Facebook, you can watch the screencast itself on Livestream, which will be doing the heavy lifting on the video part (the Livestream video is embedded into the Facebook page).

If you do elect to watch the video on Facebook, you'll be able to comment on the page while it is happening, and take a more direct part in the democratic process (or at least make some noise about it).
Congress to broadcast opening day live on Facebook, later today originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 05 Jan 2011 05:00:00 EST.
Back in November, Mark Zuckerberg dispelled claims that an IPO was in Facebook's immediate future, but these continuing, massive private investments would suggest that an IPO should occur this year, or perhaps in 2012. It all comes down to whether the Securities and Exchange Commission let Facebook -- and other private Internet companies like Twitter and Zynga -- dilute their shares using "special purpose vehicles."

Goldman Sachs, which underwrote the IPOs of Yahoo and Microsoft, and coordinated many others, is a bit of a technology IPO veteran. With this investment it has likely secured its position to take Facebook public -- and when that happens, it's anyone's guess as to how much Facebook will be valued at.
Facebook valued at $50 billion by massive Goldman Sachs investment, IPO expected soon originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 03 Jan 2011 07:20:00 EST. That is the sound of inevitability.

Hitwise has just released two sets of data for 2010: the top 10 most-searched terms, and the top 10 most-visited websites. Rather unsurprisingly, Facebook is at the top of both charts. It leads the most-visited chart by some way, too: almost 9% of all Internet visits in the U.S. were to Facebook, while Google only accounted for 7.2%.

These stats are made all the more insane when you compare them to Hitwise's 2009 figures. In 2009, Facebook only accounted for 4.3% of Internet visits -- it has more than doubled in size and activity. Google, on the other hand, with 6.7% in 2009 has shown a small amount of growth. Yahoo's homepage has stayed the same in 2010, at 3.3%, but Yahoo Mail has slumped significantly from 4.4 to 3.5%, but still ranks as the third-most visited site in 2010.

Facebook is still some way off Microsoft and Google when you factor in all of their properties (Hotmail, Bing, MSN, YouTube), but as a single website, Facebook is now by far the most visited in the world.
Facebook now the most-visited website in the world originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 30 Dec 2010 07:15:00 EST.
