The service could launch in 2011, and it would use near-field communication (NFC) technology to let customers pay by waving their phones up to 4 inches away from a checkout station.

Google chief Eric Schmidt suggested in November that NFC would eventually replace credit cards. Android 2.3 Gingerbread already includes some minor NFC functionality: it can read NFC tags, but not broadcast them to other devices (like registers). Buried in the Businessweek story is the information that Samsung's Nexus S handset already has the hardware to support NFC, and it will likely be the test device for Google's payment system.

eBay-owned PayPal is also readying an NFC-based payment service, says Businessweek. This one would allow transactions between PayPal users, not just between customers and businesses.
Google considering NFC mobile payment system originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 04 Jan 2011 14:00:00 EST. In that vein, eBay has just let fly an update for its iPhone app, which now includes barcode scanning courtesy of RedLaser integration, allowing you to search eBay on-the-go with a single "blip."

Version 2.0 also brings with it integrated selling tools for the US, Germany and the UK, saved searches with automated alerts, improved keyword searching, and a new "Reminders" feature to "stay on top of your eBay activity." So make sure you're armed and ready before you head out on your shopping rampage and download eBay Mobile 2.0 [iTunes], and grab the Amazon Mobile app [iTunes] and the standalone RedLaser app [iTunes] while you're at it.

While eBay's built-in search is certainly handy, it's not very visual. StoreSlider provides a thumbnail-laden alternative. You select a category, enter a couple of keywords, choose a sorting order, and bam! tons of auctions pop up, each with a large, pretty image.

You can also select the sorting order (Best match, Ending soonest, etc. - same options as on eBay), and filter by "Buy it Now" items or items with free delivery only. The "free delivery" is a tad sketchy; the site won't let you specify where you're located, so I suspect it's free delivery in the US only.

It's basically very similar to eBay's own search, but it's more visual and perhaps a tad faster. Another bonus is that you never have to click Next to load up more results. You just keep scrolling down, and more results are automatically loaded.

All in all, it's nothing revolutionary, but if you need to quickly review what eBay has to offer in a certain category, this is one viable search option -- and it does look nice.

StoreSlider lets you quickly search through eBay originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 10:30:00 EST.
So far, most major websites have only run photos-of-handsets, complete with skewed angles and glaring reflections. With these images, you can see what the interface of some big-name apps really look like -- and I dare say they look rather sexy.

Ironically, because of the "scrollable landscape," it's quite hard to imagine what it's like to actually use these apps. You can only see a tiny portion of each app in these screenshots. I hope there's a more graceful solution for when we start writing app reviews -- perhaps we can cut and paste a few shots together, to create a big panoramic landscape...

My dry, witty commentary accompanies each of the images in the gallery. Either click an image below to begin, or use this high-res link.
There are a handful of unofficial eBay applications for Google Android that allow you to track auctions, place bids, and complete purchases from your phone. But now there's an official app as well. eBay has launched its own utility for Google Android, and it provides most of the functionality you would want from a mobile eBay app.

The home screen presents you with a search box for finding auctions and Buy It Now items. But if you sign into your account you'll also see buttons marked watching, bidding, won, didn't win, selling, sold, unsold, and scheduled. In other words, it's easy to keep track of all of your existing eBay transactions on the go using the app.

From the search page you can click on any item for more detailed information, which is presented on a text-heavy, image-light web page that should load quickly even on a slow Internet connection. The product page features bid, watch, and refresh buttons, so you can keep tapping the screen furiously in the final seconds of an auction to see if you're winning or if you need to put in another bid.

The eBay application for Android is available as a free download from the Android Market.
Social networking sites and other online services don't want you to delete your account. There's value for them in being able to quote huge and growing user numbers, regardless of whether those users are happy to be there (though of course they hope that they are).

If you're trying to cancel your Facebook, Digg, or LinkedIn account and you're having a tough time figuring out just how to do it, head on over to Delete Your Account. Delete Your Account is an online resource that helps you delete accounts from an ever-growing number of online services. It currently lists Amazon, AIM, Digg, eBay, Facebook, Flickr, FriendFeed, Google, Hotmail, iTunes, Last.fm, LinkedIn, Meebo, Monster, MySpace, PayPal, reddit, The PirateBay, Twitter, Wikipedia, WordPress, Yahoo, and YouTube, with others on the way.

When possible Delete Your Account gives you a quick link to the page that allows you to delete your account, and instructions on how to verify that it is gone. If there are any details that you need to know like whether a site actually holds onto deleted data, that's listed as well.

Happy account deleting!

Generally speaking, the answer is that something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. This comes up when trying to evaluate the value of companies, but it can also come up when trying to evaluate the value of something that is conceptually new. For example, years ago companies popped up that created an economy around the hyperlink. Today some people are trying commoditize Twitter followers.

As Techcrunch points out, a year ago Jason Calacanis offered $250,000 to Twitter to include him on their suggested user list, which at the time would likely have netted him about a million followers. That offer placed the value of a Twitter follower at about 25 cents.

Today, you can purchase Twitter followers on eBay Buy-It-Now listings for less than half a cent. That puts Jason's valuation last year at 50 times the current value.

Of course, the problem is that just like hyperlinks, no two twitter followers have the same value. The followers you can get from eBay listings are likely either automated bots, or followers created by follower farms driven by cheap laborers in China. And Jason's desire to acquire followers from the suggested user list would have resulted in similar low-value followers.

Of course what makes a Twitter follower valuable is engagement. If you have something to say, then you want your followers to actually be listening. On the other hand, if you just want to seem impressive with a big number of followers beside your name, I guess it's not that expensive to do these days.

Online auction site eBay purchased internet telephony service Skype for about $4.1 billion in 2005. Today, the company has announced it will sell Skype for about $2 billion. eBay will keep a 35% stake in the company, which values Skype at about $2.75 billion.

Sure, on paper that means that eBay is taking a loss, but honestly, it's still probably a good deal, because as far as anyone can tell, eBay never really figured out what to do with Skype anyway.

Once upon a time there was talking about integrating Skype's VoIP service into the auction site to make communication between buyers and sellers easier. But really, who wants to call a comic book collector halfway around the world to ask questions about that $2.75 first edition Spider-Man #1 comic?

While a number of companies, including Google and Skype's founders, were said to have been interested, it looks like the buyer is an investment group. The deal is expected to go through before the end of the year.

Update: You can read Skype CEO Josh Silverman's brief comments on the deal in the official Skype blog post.
eBay to sell Skype in a deal that values it at $2.75 billion originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 10:30:00 EST. Don't panic yet if you're one of Skype's nearly 500 million users, though. The trial between Skype's parent company, eBay, and the company that produced the technology, Joltid, is not set for trial until June 2010.

Skype is working to develop its own version of the technology, so the Joltid license won't be necessary anymore. This is expensive and time-consuming, and eBay warns that it might not be successful. However, "Skype is confident of its legal position," so the sky isn't falling just yet. Interestingly, the reporting on this battle doesn't mention what part of Skype runs on the Joltid-licensed software, only quoting eBay as saying that Skype could not exist as is without the technology.

[via CNN]
Will a lawsuit spell the end of Skype? originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 01 Aug 2009 09:00:00 EST. But the latest announcement from the company is that eBay will eliminate listing fees for users that sell fewer than 5 items each month on the online auction site.

You'll still have to pay a sales fee of 8.75% of the final sale price, with a ceiling of $20 (in other words, you won't be charged more than $20 to sell items that have no listing fee).

The new fee schedule is effective June 16th and only applies to auctions, not "Buy it Now" fixed-priced listings.
eBay to eliminate listing fees for casual sellers originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 12 May 2009 17:00:00 EST. Now that eBay is ridding itself of StumbleUpon and spinning off Skype into a standalone company, it can focus on what it does best: auctions and sales. Reuters reports that eBay has offered to buy South Korea's Gmarket for as much as $1.2 billion.

Gmarket is the top e-commerce site in South Korea. Right now Yahoo! owns a 10 percent stake in the company, which it has offered to sell to eBay, which already runs an online auction site in that country. The plan is to combine ebAy's auction site with Gmarket.
eBay buys into South Korean auction market originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 16 Apr 2009 09:00:00 EST. It looks like Skype will become its own company again next year. But eBay isn't looking to sell Skype back to founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, despite recent reports that they were hoping to buy the company again. Instead, eBay put out a press release today announcing that it would separate Skype from eBay and sell it through an IPO (initial public offering) in the first half of 2010.

In the release, eBay CEO John Donahoe admits something that most of us have known since eBay first purchsed Skype for around $3 billion: "Skyper has limited synergies with eBay and PayPal." By separating Skype from eBay and running it as its own publicly traded company, Skype can do what's best for a VoIP company and not have to worry about being attached to an online auction house.

Skype generated $551 million in revenue in 2008, and had 405 million registered users.

[via Techmeme]
eBay to spin off Skype with IPO in 2010 originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 14 Apr 2009 17:14:00 EST. While it made plenty of sense for eBay to acquire PayPal, a company that many eBay users were already using to facilitate financial transactions, Skype and StumbleUpon seemed like odd fits.

Sure, you could try to figure out a way to use a social web site discovery tool to promote auctions, and you could use Skype's communication tools to encourage communication between buyers and sellers. But both Skype and StumbleUpon seemed like square pegs in eBay's round hole.

Now hot on the heels of news that Skype's founders are exploring the possibility of buying their company back from eBay comes news that StumbleUpon's founders did buy their company back.

StumbleUpon is now back in th ehands of founders Garret Camp and Geoff Smith and a new group of investors. The official reason for the buyback? Camp says "there were few long-term synergies between the two businesses." We could have told them that two years ago. Oh wait, we did.

[via TechCrunch]
eBay sells StumbleUpon back to... A few years back online auction site eBay purchased Skype for about $3 billion. But the two companies have always seemed like an awkward fit. After all, while in theory it might make sense to integrate Skype's VoIP and chat technology into eBay's site to help facilitate auctions, the truth is that email works just fine for working out the kinks in most transactions. And eBay has never really done very much to integrate Skype with its other services.

Now the New York Times is reporting that Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis are exploring the possibility of buying Skype back from eBay. It's not clear how much money they'll need to buy the company back, but it seems likely that eBay could let it go for significantly less than it paid for the service.
Skype creators looking to buy it back from eBay originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 11 Apr 2009 09:00:00 EST. PicClick is a tool that lets you browse eBay and Amazon product listings by sifting through images rather than text based descriptions. The web app was developed by Ryan Sit, the same guy who brought us ListPic, a visual browser for Oodle classifieds.

The new site works reasonably well. You can click on eBay or Amazon and then pick a category to start looking through images. Drag the slider bar at the top right of the screen if you want to make the images larger or smaller. And you can drag your mouse over an image for more details including the price. Clicking an image will take you to the product page.

You can also search for items and set a minimum or maximum price or limit your search by zip code. Those features only work for eBay searches though, not for Amazon. And some of the Amazon prices are a bit inaccurate. For example, when I searched for Amazon MP3 downloads, every song and album had a $0 price tag. I figured maybe there was a huge sale/promotion going on, but when I clicked through to Amazon, the real prices showed up.
PicClick: Visual browser for ebay and Amazon originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 02 Jan 2009 11:00:00 EST. Tweebay is an online auction service that uses Twitter to let people know about the items you're selling. Here's how it works. You follow Tweebay on Twitter and you'll receive a direct message to verify your account. Then you can bid on auctions posted on the site or post new listings.

Auction terms should look familiar to anyone who has ever used eBay. You can upload a phoot, set a buy now price, or a reserve price. You can also set a postage price and choose your currency, although right now all listings are in British pounds. In Twitter-like style, you have to keep your descriptions under 240 characters.

There's no feedback, which is one of the things that makes buying and selling from strangers on eBay possible. But since the people most likely to see your Tweebay listings are your Twitter friends, they may trust you enough to buy from you without seeing a feedback rating.

If the site takes off, that feedback issue could become a problem, since there's nothing stopping you from visiting Tweebay.com and looking for auctions from people you don't know (although the lack of a search engine makes the web page only moderately useful). And the site likely faces another problem: trademark infringement. I wouldn't be surprised to see Tweebay change its name to something that sounds a bit less like eBay at some point.

[via TechCrunch]
Tweebay: What if eBay was powered by Twitter? originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 26 Dec 2008 17:00:00 EST. What's the first thing you do after you layoff 10 percent of your workforce? You go on a buying spree, right? That's what eBay appears to be doing anyway. The company, which currently employs about 15,000 people plans to layoff about 1,000 full time workers as well as a number of temporary employees. At the same time, eBay has announced it will spend over $1.3 billion to buy two companies.

First up, eBay will buy Danish competitor DBA for more than $380 million. But the big news for folks who don't live in Denmark is the $945 million the company is spending to purchase Bill Me Later, a company which allows web sites to perform instant credit checks based on your birth date and last four digits of your social security number allowing online retailers to extend you instant credit and send you a bill later.

Bill Me Later's technology will be used to complement eBay's existing PayPal online payment system.

There's no question that eBay needed to do something to deal with increasing competition from Amazon Marketplace and other online stores/auction houses. But I have to say, if I were one of the 1,000+ people getting laid off, I wouldn't be to happy to see my former employer spending this kind of cash on acquiring new properties.
eBay lays off 1000 workers, buys Bill Me Later originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 06 Oct 2008 11:00:00 EST.
Online auction site eBay has launched a a new tool that makes it easy to find out how much an item is selling for on eBay even when you're visiting another site. It's called Browser Highlighter, and here's how it works. You download and install the tool, and then when you're searching for items on selected sites, a "compare on eBay" button will appear. Click the button and a window will pop up over the web page you're currently reading with a list of eBay items matching the term you were searching for.

Browser Highlighter doesn't work with every site on the web. But it does work with Google and Yahoo! search pages, Google and Yahoo! shopping pages, Amazon, and Nextag. Say for example, you're searching for an iPod. You can search Amazon for iPods, and see a list of items matching your query on Amazon. Then you can click the compare on eBay button to see if you can find a better deal on ebay before making your purchase from Amazon.

The plugin also comes bundled with the Skype browser extension that lets you click any phone number on a web page in order to initiate a call with Skype. This plugin's been available as a separate download for a while. While you can uninstall the Skype plugin once it's installed, there does not appear to be a way to opt out of installing it in the first place if all you want is the Borwser Highlighter.

Browser Highlighter works with Firefox and Internet Explorer and is available for Windows only. eBay plans to release a Mac version that works with Safari soon.

But since the online auction site was founded, users were able to send checks or arrange payments via other methods if they were more convenient. Now all that's about to change.

Starting in about a month, eBay will stop allowing users to send checks or money orders as payment for items purchased on the US version of the site. You'll only be able to pay using PayPal, ProPay, credit or debit cards (if the seller has an internet merchant account), or pay for the item upon pickup.

In January, eBay will make sure all of these options are easily available in the checkout section. For example, you'll be able to enter your credit card information to complete a purchase if a seller is authorized to accept credit cards.

eBay tried to issue a PayPal-only requirement in Australia earlier this year, but regulators ruled that the move would be anti-competitive.

[via Ars Technica]
eBay to ban checks and money orders in late October originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 24 Sep 2008 12:00:00 EST.

TypoBuddy, like previously reviewed TypoTracker, helps you find deals by searching for misspelled variations of the items you search for. Why?

Because most people that search for a particular item will try to spell it right - meaning that listings with typos might go unnoticed, and you'll wind up getting a sweet deal just because some seller was careless enough to not check his or her typing.

It's a great concept, but does it work?

I tried submitting a few queries to both sites, first looking for "thinkpad." Although TypoBuddy told me it had found 100 misspelled matches, clicking through to the eBay results netted only 76 - still very respectable. The search automatically homes in on your locale, so you may need to change locations to get more results.

First, it's a virtual bazaar where anyone can hawk their own goods rather than a traditional storefront where a company maintains and sells its own inventory. Second, as an auction site, there's a chance that buyers will get a real bargain, or that sellers will get more than an item is worth.

For a while now, eBay has been offering sellers the option of selling items for a fixed price. This way both the buyer and the seller know exactly how much money will change hands up front. If you search eBay for pretty much any item now, you'll find a ton of "buy it now" listings amidst the sea of auctions.

But now it looks like eBay wants to change the ratio a bit, by lowering seller fees for fixed priced items. This will do three things:

Make it easier for customers to simply place an order for an item at a specified price instead of waiting a week to find out if they won an auction

Help eBay compete with the thousands of other web stores offering items for fixed prices

Kill off one of the things that really made eBay special

Now, eBay isn't really going to emphasize that last bit. But the truth is, the move sort of turns eBay into half.com (which is already owned by eBay). Sure, a few sellers might decide it's worth selling their items in auctions, hoping that some buyer will forget to comparison shop and pay way too much for an item. But if it's cheaper to just list the item for the price you hope to get, why wouldn't you? And that takes a way a bit of the excitement involved in the bidding process.

Then again, with so many people using eBay, when was the last time you really got a bargain as a buyer?
eBay to de-emphasize auctions, lose all distinctiveness originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 14:00:00 EST.

If you happen to buy or sell on eBay frequently, the Lauge custom browser is an interesting tool you'll want to check out.

Lauge sports a ton of functionality that makes using eBay less bothersome. The search tab provides a handy tree view of all eBay categories and makes navigation around the site a snap; favorite your go-to categories to access them quickly later. It also includes a simple keyword search and seller search with results filtering options.

Once you've selected a category to browse, Lauge activates the gallery view which provides a thumbnailed view of all eBay gallery items. It's a great visual tool for separating the wheat from the chaff in a hurry. Item listings can be sorted in the same ways as on eBay's site, and you can fully customize which columns you'd like displayed in the results pane. Some options, like item condition (which would be truly useful) don't yet display, though that may have more to do with sellers not specifying it in the first place.

Lauge also handles tabbed browsing, making it easy to switch back and forth between items or categories. Online auction site eBay may have started as a marketplace where anyone could buy or sell used books, toys, computer parts, or other junk, but over the last decade the site has turned into much more than that. Many power sellers depend on eBay for their livelihood, whether their running a bricks and mortar store and selling excess inventory online or selling handmade goods or items rummaged from yard sales.

So when eBay comes along and strikes a partnership with online superstore Buy.com, some independent sellers were a little ticked off. The Buy.com eBay store features hundreds of thousands of items. While the terms of Buy.com's deal with eBay haven't been disclosed, many eBay sellers assume that the auction site has waived the listing fee for Buy.com, only charging the company a commission when items actually sell.

From eBay's standpoint, this makes perfect business sense. How do you make sure your online marketplace always has a steady stream of goods that people can order? Partner with a large company that offers everything from electronics to sporting goods. But some independent sellers feel that by flooding the marketplace with cheap Buy.com items, eBay is effectively killing mom & pop stores.

What do you think? Do you use eBay to buy or sell items? Would you rather see an eBay populated with bargains from major online retailers, or are there enough internet commerce sites that already offer this service? Would you rather eBay remain a place to buy new and used items from independent sellers?
Is Buy.com partnership transforming eBay from a marketplace to a store? originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 10:00:00 EST. In many instances, software makers insist that what you're actually paying for isn't ownership of the application, but a license to use the application. And if that's all you paid for, then you don't have the right to resell the software.

But what happens when you buy a software CD secondhand? Can you sell it then? That's what Tim Vernor, an eBay dealer did. He bought several copies of AutoCAD. But when he went to sell that software on eBay, Autodesk, the makers of the software contacted eBay and requested that the auctions be suspended. Vernor issued a response, and Autodesk never responded, so his sales were reinstated.

After doing this a few times, eBay apparently received one takedown notice too many, because the auction site canceled Vernor's account. So he took Autodesk to court, claiming that he has every right to sell the software. While formal arguments have yet to be presented, Vernor has already won the first round. A federal judge denied Autodesk's motion to dismiss the case, which means that it can go forward.

The ins and outs of the case are pretty complex, but the judge has ruled that Autodesk has not yet managed to show that Vernor was bound by the company's license and prohibited from reselling the software. If Vernor is successful, this case could pave the way for an increase in used software sales on sites like eBay, although it's likely that the case would only set a precedent in cases that are extraordinarily similar to Vernor's.

As expected, eBay has banned sellers from leaving negative or neutral feedback. Earlier this ear the auction site announced plans to change its feedback policy in order to discourage sellers from leaving negative feedback in retribution for negative comments from buyers.

On the one hand, this seems like a reasonable measure to prevent sellers from abusing the feedback system. On the other hand, there really are bad buyers out there. Some people bid on auctions and then back out either because they misread the item descriptions or never had any intention of paying in the first place. And while sellers can request a refund for transaction fees from eBay, they then have to either offer the item to another bidder for a lower price or re-list the item.

It would probably make a lot more sense for eBay to allow sellers to leave negative feedback -- but only before buyers leave feedback. That way there's no way to leave a nasty comment in response to negative feedback. Or perhaps eBay could allow negative feedback only after a reasonable period of time has passed, like 14 days or a month. That way buyers and sellers should have plenty of time to resolve their differences before leaving feedback.

The company is thinking of requiring members to use PayPal to complete transactions -- in Australia anyway.

Right now you can arrange payments by check, money order, PayPal, or other methods. But next month eBay will change that policy and require Australian shoppers to pay via PayPal. And that's prompted antitrust complaints from Australian banks, which arrange money transfers for eBay auctions. Some sellers also complain that PayPal fees are higher than bank transfer fees, which means the new rule could cost them money.

Honestly, we don't know many people who use eBay and don't use PayPal. It's easy and convenient. And eBay claims it does a better job of preventing fraud than other payment services. But let's not forget that eBay gets a cut every time you pay with PayPal. And that's on top of the commission eBay already takes for items sold on the site. The company claims any additional income will be offset by increased investment in buyer protection measures.

There are currently no plans to go PayPal-only in the US and other markets. But eBay could be using Australia as a test case before expanding the policy. Australian regulators haven't yet issued a final ruling on the antitrust implications of the policy.

While eBay is busy annoying its power sellers by raising fees and changing its policy on digital goods, a bunch of new companies are popping up and hoping to grab a little piece of the online sales pie that eBay has been hogging. Fididel is a new site that aims to differentiate itself from other auction/retail sites by letting buyers and sellers negotiate prices in real-time.

At first glance, Fididel looks pretty much like every other online store you've ever seen. You can search for items by keyword or you can browse through a list of categories. but when you click the "fididel!" button, things get a bit funky. Instead of a bid or checkout page, you get taken to a chat window. And we're using the word chat loosely here, because there's actually only a predefined list of comments that you can leave. While this probably prevents buyers from swearing or making inappropriate comments to sellers, it also constrains the terms of your haggling session a bit.

But the important thing is that you can find an item listed for $100, offer $50, and meet somewhere in the middle. The whole process can be much quicker than waiting for an eBay auction to end. of course, the seller needs to be online in order for you to have a real-time negotiation session. But if you don't sit in front of your computer all day, you can hire another Fididel member to do your negotiating for you for a commission fee.

In case you hadn't noticed, there's been a bit of a revolt among eBay power sellers. Basically, eBay increased some fees, which led some buyers to hold a boycott. But the truth of the matter is eBay is a giant, and if you make a decent portion of your income buying and selling goods on eBay, there aren't a ton of good alternatives. Wigix wants to change that, and the site is willing to waive fees on all items sold for less than $25 to do it. For pricier items, WIgix has significantly lower transaction fees than you'll find on eBay.

Wigix isn't exactly an auction like eBay. Rather, it's an "exchange," which lets buyers and sellers connect with one another. Sellers don't have to fill out product descriptions manually. Instead they choose from a database of products which already have product descriptions. This database also makes the search process easy for buyers. When you start to enter a term in the search box, Wigix will provide a list of items to chose from before you even hit enter. When you find the item you're looking for, you can see how many buyers and sellers there are, and you can set a price at which you're wiling to buy an item. As soon as the item is available for that price, Wigix will hook you up with a seller.

You can conduct similar transactions with eBay's Half.com, which lets you "pre-order" an item which will automatically be purchased as soon as someone offers one for sale at your desired price. But Half.com only includes books, movies, music, and video games, while Wigix users can sell pretty much anything.

[via Mashable]
Wigix wants to be the next eBay, offers no-fee auctions to do it originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 29 Apr 2008 18:00:00 EST. When we first looked at Chirp in January, the application was a tool for grabbing images from your Flickr and Facebook accounts and showing them on your Windows desktop. Now Chirp has added support Twitter and eBay. A Mac client is also available.

Chirpscreen comes in two parts: a desktop viewer called Chirpscreen and a screen saver. The screen saver is still Windows-only, but Chirpscreen Desktop runs on Macs and PCs.

When you first run Chirpscreen, you'll be presented with a slideshow of Flickr photos. But you can enter your login details for various social networks in order to see content from your contacts, including Facebook and Flickr images and Twitter messages. You can also enter keywords to see an assortment of images from public Flickr photostreams and from eBay.

Chirpscreen Desktop also lets you respond to Twitter messages or leave comments on Facebook images. It's also easy to share Flickr images via email or through Facebook.

[via WebWare]
Chirpscreen adds Twitter, Mac support originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 25 Apr 2008 09:00:00 EST. Online auction site eBay is changing its policy on digital items that are delivered electronically. Instead of selling these items via auction, eBay now requires sellers to take out 30-day classified ads for $9.95 to sell digital goods. The change is intended to prevent sellers from artificially boosting their feedback ratings by selling thousands of identical downloads for as little as pennies. There's no feedback involved in the classifieds section, but classified ads will show up in a regular eBay search.

The inherent problem with digital downloads is that there are pretty much no delivery costs, and once you produce an item you can sell it over and over again, which gives sellers the ability to game the system. Of course, we know a few record company execs that don't see things that way. And to be perfectly honest, we're not convinced the classifieds section is the right place for digital goods, because while we don't want to see anyone beating the feedback system into submission, if you legitimately sell items that have value on a regular basis, it would be nice to get some positive feedback for your efforts.

Users can still sell digital goods in traditional auctions -- as long as they provide physical media which requires shipping. If you've got software on a CD or DVD for sale, that's fine. Just don't offer buyers the option of digital downloads or you'll be in violation of eBay's new terms of service. That said, when we checked this morning, there were plenty of auctions still available for digital downloads. It'll probably take eBay a while to clean house.

[via Techdirt]
eBay bans auctions of digital downloads originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 02 Apr 2008 11:00:00 EST. Has this ever happened to you? You run out of ink, paper, good books to read, or something else, so you go online to order replacement as soon as humanly possible. You find what you need for a good price, add it to your cart, and then when you hit the checkout button the shipping charges hit you like a 2 ton heavy thing. The truth is while many sites like Amazon promise free shipping on orders over a certain price, it's not always easy to tell if an item qualifies for free shipping.

Free Shipping On is a new service that makes it easier to find free shipping deals. First, the site has a huge database of deals and coupon codes you can use to get free shipping from stores like Newegg, Circuit City, Staples, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Apple. The site is sort of like CouponMountain, Techbargains, or xpBargains, except it focuses specifically on free shipping deals.

But you can also use the service to search Amazon and eBay only for items that can be shipped for free. No more surprises in the checkout aisle... or cart.

[via AppScout]
Avoid pesky shipping costs with Free Shipping On originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 15:00:00 EST. Not even the numbers seemed to notice, with hardly a hiccup in the volume of daily listings on eBay.

Rather than admit defeat, the same eBay sellers have decided to extend their boycott. Originally scheduled to end February 25th, the boycott will now continue to March 9th.

After all, boycotts work, right? Sure they do.

Like spray-on hair.

Like putting the Windows Vista logo on those "Vista Capable" machines.

eBay has yet to respond in any official capacity regarding the boycott, and it's hard to imagine it ever will. The bottom line is that eBay remains the dominant online auction space, and with no real competitors in the same space, it can do whatever it darn well pleases.

[via AppScout]
Sellers boycott of eBay extended into March originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 28 Feb 2008 16:00:00 EST. Hot on the heels of Adobe's official release of AIR version 1.0 comes the 1.0 version of eBay Desktop. The two releases are so close you would think the makers of eBay Desktop planned it (which of course they did).

eBay Desktop 1.0 provides a desktop alternative to the eBay website - you can use it to search, browse, bid, keep track of your auctions, and more. And because it uses Adobe AIR, it runs on both Windows (XP and Vista) and Max OS X (10.4 and 10.5).

The eBay Desktop installer weighs in around 7 MB (the AIR installer is included if you don't have it installed on your system already). Install was quick and easy, though getting the program to run was a little more work: on our test Mac, the program kept crashing until we went to the Applications folder and opened the program manually.

When you first start the program, you'll be met with a nifty little video introduction to the eBay desktop. The eBay desktop home page allows you to track all your bidding and watching activity, and there are separate tabs for finding items, tracking and paying for your winning bids, and a feeds tab.

eBay has put a lot of work into this desktop application, and it shows. The interface is clean and very intuitive. The one major drawback is the lack of features for sellers. You can't track the items you're selling or your past sales. At this time, eBay desktop is definitely a buyer's tool.
eBay Desktop 1.0 released originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 26 Feb 2008 15:00:00 EST. What if you held a protest and nobody noticed? Unfortunately it happens all the time. And while a group of eBay sellers who are protesting eBay's new fees are getting some media attention for their week-long boycott, the truth is that it's hard to findy any real impact on the auction site.

The boycott launched on Monday, and according to Fortune Small Business, eBay listings are down just 3%. That might sound like a substantial figure until you realize that it means there are 14 million items listed for auction, down from 14.5 million a few days earlier.

Those figures come from third party services, while eBay officials tell Fortune that there's been no noticeable impact at all. And even if there was an impact, would it make any real difference? eBay is still the biggest name in online auctions, and even if the site isn't the seller's paradise it once was, it's still the go-to spot for buyers. So while sellers may be able to stage a one week protest, we're guessing they're going to wind up returning to the service soon with no choice but to put up with higher fees.

While eBay isn't the only online auction site around, it doesn't face very serious competition from any other service, so while there's pressure to increase revenue, there's little pressure to stay competitive with Amazon Marketplace or other rival services.

[via Silicon Alley Insider]
eBay sellers launch boycott, nobody notices originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 20 Feb 2008 13:00:00 EST. A few weeks ago eBay announced plans to change its fee structure. The company was spinning the move as something that would help sellers save money. But that only worked out to be true in some instances. Since eBay planned to lower listing fees but raise final sale fees, most sellers were a bit concerned that they'd wind up giving eBay a higher percentage of their hard earned cash.

Responding to concerns from sellers, eBay has announced yet another fee structure change. This time, the listing fees for media including books, music, movies, and video games will go way down. The price for listing an item with a starting price less than a buck drops from $0.20 to $0.10. Sellers with starting bids of less than $10 will now be charged $0.25 instead of $0.40. And if you've got an item with a starting bid of under $25, you pay $0.35 instead of $0.60.

Since eBay is still raising the fees on final sales, in most cases sellers will still wind up paying owing eBay a little more. But today's announcement softens the blow. A little.
eBay announces (another) fee structure change originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 20:00:00 EST. Here are some of our favorite Download Squad articles from the week that was.

Invites for Digsby and SugarSync

This week we looked at two new services in private beta. Digsby is desktop application that lets you manage multiple email, IM, and social networking accounts. It's sort of like Pidgin plus an email notifier and a desktop client for Facebook and MySpace. And we've got 5,000 invites to give away.

We also have about 500 invites for SugarSync, another new desktop/web service. SugarSync lets users synchronize files between their computer, mobile device, and a web server. Just add contact/calendar sync and we'd be in heaven.

Email user interface advancement - Emailers Anonymous

Google made a lot of waves when it launched an email service a few years ago. The idea of a web mail account that measured storage in gigabytes rather than megabytes was pretty revolutionary at the time. But vast amounts of storage aren't the only thing that set Gmail apart. In this week's edition of Emailers Anonymous we take a look at threaded messaging and how it changes the way we think of email.
Continue reading Download Squad Week in Review

Download Squad Week in Review originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 09 Feb 2008 17:00:00 EST. Have you ever bought something on eBay only to have a problem with the transaction? Maybe the seller never shipped the item, or didn't respond to your questions. Maybe it was damaged and the seller wouldn't let you return it. Or maybe the item arrived late or wasn't as described.

The first thing many of us would do is leave negative feedback for the seller. But sometimes we stop to think twice before doing that. Because if we leave negative feedback, the seller might retaliate by leaving negative feedback for us. And then when we go to sell something we might find it hard to get a fair price because we have a mark or two against us.

eBay is aware of this problem, and is proposing a pretty extreme solution: prevent sellers from leaving negative feedback for buyers. The BBC reports that starting in May, sellers will no longer have the ability to leave negative feedback. Of course, sellers aren't particularly happy with the proposed change, saying it removes a tool for dealing with problem customers who refuse to pay or make trouble in other ways.

But honestly, the feedback system is really much more useful for buyers trying to find trustworthy sellers than vice versa. For the most part, if someone wins an auction, the system is set up so that you have to sell the item to them. So there's never been much reason for eBay to allow sellers to rate buyers anyway.
eBay to eliminate negative feedback from sellers originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 19:00:00 EST. But one Pennsylvanian woman who started selling goods on eBay to stay at home with her daughter who was diagnosed with a brain tumor, is being prosecuted by the state of Pennsylvania for not having an auctioneer's license.

The story essentially boils down to the idea that people who are doing well on eBay in Pennsylvania need to be regulated, and at this point it looks like suing them for not having a costly auctioneer's license is the way it's going to happen. So far, only two people have been hit, apparently to make a legal point.

Correct us if we're wrong, but isn't eBay technically the auctioneer, while sellers are just people/businesses putting items up for auction? Now whether this is just a case of misguided bureaucracy or a way to create some commotion in order to get online auction related legislation in place, this seems rather wrong.

If she was dodging taxes on her at-home business, that is one thing, but from the looks of it, she's getting sued over a point which technically doesn't even apply to her. But then again, there are those who think the Internet is a "series of tubes."

[via Techdirt]
Selling on eBay without an auctioneer's license? originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 08:00:00 EST.
