As its name implies, this is related to last week's unveiling of five new HTML5-based Dynamic Views for Blogger.

The extension adds an orange Blogger icon in your address bar when you're visiting a Blogger blog. If you click on the orange icon, you'll get a list of the five aforementioned Dynamic Views. You can then select an option and Chrome will render the blog you're visiting using that particular view. Rinse and repeat if needed.

Naturally, you can still access the new Dynamic Views (in any 'modern' browser) just by appending /view to the URL of the blog you want to visit, however the Chrome extension makes it a lot easier to get to the new layouts.

Google has launched a new mobile-optimized way to display search results for stocks. This works around the inherent limitations of how much information can be shown at once on a phone's small screen by letting you swipe horizontally to navigate.

When you search for your favorite stock ticker symbol on your smartphone, you'll be presented with a result page that can be seen to the left in the image above. It displays an interactive graph on a 'card', and you can switch the amount of time that the graph covers by simply tapping on the buttons below it.

If you swipe the card from the right to the left, you'll be presented with a new 'card' that contains the latest financial news for the company. If you swipe again, you'll get a market overview, and a further swipe will get you to a summary of your stock portfolio (but only if you have created a Google Finance portfolio and are logged in to your Google account).

The new feature is now available in English for iPhone and devices running Android 2.1 or newer. More languages are on the way, but support for other mobile platforms seems unlikely, judging from Google's recent track record.
Google mobile search gets redesigned results for stocks originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 16:00:00 EST.
During the Photoshop World conference's keynote, Adobe has unveiled some details about the next generation Photoshop for iPad, that's being worked on as we speak. Despite the recent feature additions to the current version of Photoshop for iOS, that's still an 'Express' app, and for good reasons -- although quite robust, it's nowhere near as capable as the desktop software going by the same name.

However, that gap is set to narrow with the upcoming (as of yet unnamed) version of Photoshop for iPad, which will bring real layer support for the first time in a mobile image editing app (see image after the break). It will let you add, switch to, and edit layers, and an isometric view will allow you to see the different layers with a quick glance. You'll be able to drag and rotate image objects, and the app will feature a new color mixer that allows blending colors "like a painter," according to the image you can see above.

It's unclear at the moment when Adobe plans to launch the new full-featured Photoshop for iPad, or whether it plans to bring its features to Android or other mobile platforms. One can hope, though.
Continue reading Adobe Photoshop for iPad will get real layer support in the future

Adobe Photoshop for iPad will get real layer support in the future originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 14:00:00 EST.
Wikipedia Beautifier is an extension for Google Chrome that removes all the clutter from Wikipedia and lets you focus on the most important aspect of the online encyclopedia: its content. Wikipedia Beautifier has been inspired by Readability, and aims to provide the same amount of article-centered beauty, while also keeping the familiar navigation menus within reach.

After you've installed the extension, all Wikipedia pages will look as good as the one in the image above. If you need to use any of Wikipedia's navigation elements, fret not. They will neatly fade back in if you just mouse over the top or the left of the page.

Wikipedia Beautifier changes the content fonts to big, serif fonts, justifies text, and adds automatic hyphenation. It also makes various margin adjustments that result in things just lining up in nicer ways on Wikipedia pages.

If you use Wikipedia daily, appreciate the information it provides but not its design, and generally enjoy beautiful fonts and minimalism, this is a must-try. And since the navigation options fade in when you want them to, you don't even have to sacrifice usability for beauty and cleanliness.

A couple of months after Microsoft started testing it, the new Microsoft.com design is now live for everyone. You can see it simply by going to Microsoft.com, whereas until now you had to use a special URL to access it.

The new design is clearly inspired by the Metro UI, and as such makes the website look a lot like the Zune media player, Windows Media Center, and, perhaps most strikingly, Windows Phone 7. Especially reminiscent of Microsoft's newest mobile platform effort is the way you switch between the 'For Home' and 'For Work' parts of the site. When you reach the site, you see the former. To switch to the latter, you click on the arrow that's visible beneath 'For Work', and then the new page just slides into view from the right to the left. A link to 'For Home' then appears where the 'For Work' link used to be, and clicking it results in the same horizontal sliding action that's very rarely seen on the Web.

It certainly looks like, for the first time in many years, Microsoft is aiming to unify the design language across all of their products, services, and Web presences, and that's a very good thing regardless of how you feel about the Metro UI elements. And since Windows 8 is rumored to get some Metro-like UI elements, we're set to see more and more of this design from Microsoft in the coming years, so you'd better get used to it.
Microsoft.com redesigned, brings WP7's Metro UI to the Web originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 17 Mar 2011 17:30:00 EST.
First up, Photoshop.com galleries now each have a space in which your favorite album gets featured. This happens in a so-called 'hero carousel' that now shows up at the top of your gallery. It automatically cycles through the first five images in your favorite album, and displays them in large format. If you don't specify which album gets featured in the hero carousel, then pictures from your most recently updated album will be shown.

The look and feel of the links to other albums in your gallery has also received a makeover. These now show the album cover, as well as thumbnails for the first four photos or videos in that album.

Photoshop.com has also gotten new profile pages. Your profile page now lets you share more about yourself to its visitors, including your interests, the Photoshop products you use, and your location. Your contact info will only be shown to your Photoshop.com friends to prevent spam, but everything else will be made public, so take that into account when you fill in your new profile.
Photoshop.com gets featured albums in galleries, new profile pages originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 15 Mar 2011 12:40:00 EST.
Automattic has just announced that premium themes have become available for WordPress.com blogs. Self-hosted WordPress.org installations have long been benefiting from a thriving theming ecosystem, complete with many paid themes -- but this is the first time that users of WordPress.com, the service that hosts your blog for you, are able to buy premium themes.

For starters, only two themes can be purchased: Shelf, pictured above, and Headlines, a screenshot of which is available after the break. Shelf is a very responsive tumblelog-style theme that features a fluid design. It can be yours for a one-time price of $68. Headlines is a magazine-style theme that comes with a Featured Post slideshow, multiple menus, and 15 different color schemes. It can be yours for a one-time price of $45.

To purchase and install any of these themes, go to your WordPress.com Dashboard, and click on the Premium link in Appearance > Themes.

Automattic plans to have many more premium themes available later this year, alongside a great number of new free themes. Those who purchase Premium WordPress.com themes will get full access to a dedicated support forum that will only be accessible to Premium theme buyers.

Continue reading WordPress.com blogs get premium paid-for themes

WordPress.com blogs get premium paid-for themes originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 13:30:00 EST. OS7 is comprised of two menus: the Live Tiles and the alphabetically sorted list of apps you have installed, just like WP7. You can customize the tile menu however you wish, and 'pinning' an item to it is as easy as scrolling to the desired app in the alphabetical list, long-pressing, and then selecting 'Pin to Start Menu'. Removing an item from the Start Menu is done in much the same way.

OS7 guarantees none of your apps will be missing icons, the setup is amazingly simple, and it requires absolutely no paid plug-ins whatsoever to fully function. The only caveat? In case you haven't already guessed, it's only available for jailbroken devices. But that's Apple's doing, so don't blame the theme's developer.

OS7 is currently in public beta. The installation instructions are available in this thread on ModMyi. A demo video is available after the break.
Continue reading OS7 is a Windows Phone 7 theme for your iPhone or iPod touch, complete with live tiles

OS7 is a Windows Phone 7 theme for your iPhone or iPod touch, complete with live tiles originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 31 Jan 2011 09:30:00 EST. YouTube, after testing a redesign of its homepage for quite a while, has now begun the rollout to all YouTube users. The new homepage brings many improvements, all designed to make it more personal to each user.

The 'Videos Being Watched Now' module has been removed, and some modules that haven't seen much use, such as 'Spotlight' and 'Featured Videos' have been moved to the right sidebar, to make room for the main feature of the new homepage: a list of personally relevant videos, made up from recommendations for you, your subscription activity, as well as videos being shared by your friends.

You can filter the homepage to show only the newest content from your subscriptions. And if a channel uploads more than one video in a day, you'll see all those videos on your homepage, as opposed to just one of them in the past. The new homepage knows which videos you've already seen, and they appear grayed out. Videos that you have liked or favorited are always easy to get back to. You can remove any video from the homepage, and you can now quickly get to your inbox when you have new messages or comments.

The new homepage is in the process of being rolled out to all YouTube users, so if you don't see it yet, don't worry, you will soon -- and incidentally, the new features only work while you're logged in.
YouTube rolls out new personalized homepage to all users originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 20 Jan 2011 13:30:00 EST. Version 2.0 of bare-bones text editor WriteMonkey has just been released. This release comes after a lengthy testing period (some of it covered on Download Squad), and adds several news features:

Text comments: When working on a manuscript, sometimes you may want to add comments and thoughts that should not be included as part of the final text. Now you can preface a paragraph with // (two slashes), and WriteMonkey will regard it as a comment. It would not be included in the word count, you could select not to export it, and its text would be slightly dimmed, using the new syntax coloring engine.

Typewriter mode: This mode carries WriteMonkey's typewriter metaphor to the extreme. It keeps the text insertion point in the middle of the line, and moves the text around it. So you type and the lines move back and forth. It's actually lots of fun, and can be toggled by hitting Ctrl+Shift+Alt+L.

More statistics: WriteMonkey's had text statistics for a while now (accessible using F12). These have been made more comprehensive, and they now show average words per sentence, estimated reading time, amount of "hard words" (words with more than 3 syllables), and more. There's also a list of word frequencies so you can avoid repetition. This feature has been around since version 2.0 preview 1, but if you haven't upgraded from 0.9 (the previous "Stable" version), it's a great addition.

There are quite a few other features - read all about them in WriteMonkey's release notes.
WriteMonkey bare-bones text editor now has "typewriter mode" and new syntax coloring originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 17 Jan 2011 08:40:00 EST.

About.me, the flashy personal profile site that was snapped up by AOL just days after opening to the public, has added some important missing features. It doesn't matter how cool or useful your profile is if nobody can find it, and all of the additions to About.me make profile sharing and discovery easier. You can now quickly share your profile on your social networks, and browse or search for others' About.me pages.

Since you could already connect your Facebook and Twitter accounts to About.me, sharing buttons are kind of a no-brainer as a feature, and it's actually surprising that they weren't added before the sale to AOL. As far as the new features for discovering About.me users, they're all about the design. You won't search your friends on About.me to find links to all their social profiles, you'll search for them because you want to see what their cool splash page looks like. The directory is the same way: you can browse profiles and check out featured users whose profiles show off About.me's award-nominated design stylings.
About.me adds profile sharing, people search, and a gorgeous directory originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 14 Jan 2011 17:50:00 EST. Pixelmator has a great number of dedicated fans, since it does almost everything Photoshop can, but for a fraction of the price.

The app's developers have announced how the transition to the Mac App Store is going to happen. Unfortunately, all those who have already bought Pixelmator will have to purchase it again, since Apple doesn't allow for license conversion. However, Pixelmator is now available on the Mac App Store for only $29.99, half of its normal price, in a bid to sweeten the deal for those who already own a license (although this special price is open to all, even people who've never bought Pixelmator before). Furthermore, the upcoming version 2.0 will be a free update for all those who've purchased the current 1.6.4 from Apple's App Store. 1.x versions will continue to be available elsewhere, but to update to 2.0 you'll have to use the Mac App Store, and, obviously, after that's released, previous versions will be phased out.

The developers explain that this move will allow them to direct their full attention to the application's development, and not take care of sales channels, serial numbers and anti-piracy measures. They're also happy that installation couldn't be any easier, and point out that the Mac App Store will let you re-download a purchased app -- which is very useful once you get a new computer, for example.

What remains to be seen is whether this move will represent the start of a trend -- will other Mac app developers follow suit and restrict their apps' distribution to the Mac App Store? If they will, then Apple will have scored another gigantic app store-related victory, after having forever changed mobile app distribution with the iTunes App Store.
One of the most time consuming activities in graphic and Web design is the picking of fonts. It's basically a crap shoot: there's no way to see what text will look like until after you've selected a font -- and when you have a list of 200 fonts to get through, the process can be painstakingly tiresome. That's where Wordmark.it comes in; it's a Web app that scans your computer for installed fonts, and then shows you clearly what they look like.

It's delightfully simple: visit Wordmark.it, type your word or phrase into the text box at the top, and click "load fonts". Before you know it, a wall of beautiful fonts will appear, making the process of picking the right one so much easier. You can make the samples bigger or smaller, too, or even invert the text so that it's white-on-black.

Incidentally, if you use Word 2007 or 2010, the font selector actually applies the font to selected text as you scroll through the list. Photoshop, on the other hand, doesn't -- which is why tools like Wordmark.it exist!
Wordmark.it lets you clearly preview fonts installed on your computer originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 07 Jan 2011 07:07:00 EST. Sebastian already let you know about Gameloft's free-game-a-day deal, and Fontdeck is running a similar deal for font fanatics.

Each day from now until December 25th, you can pick up a high-quality webfont from Adfont Calendar absolutely free. The fonts are free to use on any website that receives less than one million pageviews per month, so it's a nice way to spiff up your personal or small business blogs.

The webfonts are available as free upgrades to trial accounts, so make sure you're signed up at Fontdeck before you start opening doors on the calendar.

If you have a friend that's a graphic designer or photographer, and you're really strapped for gifts this Christmas, how about giving them a TidyPSD?

For the meager (well, fairly meager) price of $9, TinyPSD will take any unorganized, jumbled-up PSD and turn it into a thing of Zen-like beauty. Sequentially numbered layers will be replaced with names! Unordered chaos will be replaced with layer groups!

TinyPSD aims for a 24-hour turnaround, but there's a testimonial on the site that suggests it can be as fast as one hour. They also accept bulk orders, which might be handy if you're a big design firm with sizable archives that need tidying up. Finally, if you're not happy with your TidyPSD, you can request a full refund.
Got a messy Photoshop PSD? We've seen announcements of the Adobe's Acrobat X suite, then Adobe Reader X and Acrobat X landed to strip our wallets of yet more moolah. But now the full Adobe X Suite is available for download, including a trial version for those who'd like to test it before sinking the best part of $800. The Windows-only Acrobat X Suite is a little bit like a best-of album: you've got Acrobat X Pro, Photoshop CS5, Captivate 5, Presenter 7, Adobe Media Encoder CS5 and LiveCycle Designer ES2 all rolled into one package. Adobe thinks it's everything you're likely to need for PDF creation, minus perhaps the media's tool of choice InDesign.

If you're serious about your document creation, but don't have Adobe's Creative Suite already, and you've got $799 burning a hole in your wallet, then the X Suite might be right up your street. Head on over to the Adobe website to check out the details, or download the trial and test it out for yourself.
Adobe X Suite available for Thanksgiving originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 25 Nov 2010 04:18:00 EST.
Watch out, Inkscape! As Web browsers become increasingly powerful, it is only a matter of time until a free browser-based vector graphics editor pops up that is powerful enough to compete with a desktop application -- and SVG-edit may well become that editor. Currently in version 2.5, this open-source project was surprisingly responsive and powerful on my aging Firefox 3.6.8.

The one thing I couldn't get it to do was curves. The feature list does say that it supports "curved paths," but I couldn't figure it out, despite previously having worked with Inkscape, CorelDRAW, and Illustrator. Other than that, SVG-Edit gracefully handled just about anything that I could come up with. You can change opacity, set the fill or the outline to any solid color or gradient, align items on the canvas, shift Z-order (bring items to the foreground or send them to the background), and lots of other functions. In case you're wondering, that screenshot isn't blurry -- it's showcasing SVG-edit's built-in Gaussian blur functionality.

SVG-edit also supports layers and imports SVG files that were created in other applications. The whole thing is powered by HTML5, JavaScript, CSS, and your compatible browser's SVG functionality. It all runs in the browser itself, too - there's no server-side component.

One neat thing that you can do with SVG-edit that you can't do with other apps is resize the UI. When you use your browser's zoom functionality, the whole thing grows, including the buttons. And it all stays crisp, because the buttons use SVG icons. It's beautiful work.

SVG-edit is a surprisingly powerful in-browser vector image editor originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 16:30:00 EST.
Mind mapping is kind of like American coffee: you either love it or hate it. While I'm not an American coffee fan, I do like mind maps, and I just found a beautiful tool for creating them -- as well as other charts. It's called Blumind [Google translate link], and here's what you need to know about it:

It's tiny: Blumind is a 244KB download. It's super-lightweight.

It's portable: The whole thing is just one executable file; there's no installation needed.

It supports color schemes: If you don't like the colors on the screenshot, don't blame Blumind. It's just one of several possible schemes that the application offers. You can change the scheme for your entire diagram in one fell swoop.

It's keyboard driven: Creating new nodes couldn't be easier. Enter creates a new sibling, while Insert or Tab creates a sub-node.

It's simple: There aren't very many options. Most notably, there are no "node styles" - meaning that you can't format one node and then save that formatting so that you can apply it to other nodes. It does have a Format Painter, though, so you can copy one node's formatting onto another.

It doesn't play well with others: While there are nice export options for PNG, SVG, JPG, and other "final" formats, there is no way to export your work to FreeMind, or to any other mind-mapping format.

It can be used for more than just mind maps: It's a snap to convert your drawing to an organizational chart, a tree chart, or a logic chart. In fact, Blumind is the fastest way I know of to create a beautiful organizational chart.

So it turns out that Marvel has a whole line of kid-friendly characters under the moniker Super Hero Squad. I like it already! And it gets even better, because I've just found that they also have a Create Your Own Comic feature on their site. It's a full-featured comic strip generator similar to previously featured ToonDoo and Toonlet, but the graphics really set it apart from the competition.

This is pure Marvel. It's beautiful stuff, really. You can either create a comic strip or an entire comic book. I selected a single strip, and I was then offered a number of possible layouts, ranging from the standard three-block strip to the funky layout that you see in the screenshot above.

You then get a palette of backgrounds, characters, objects, dialogue bubbles, and "sound effects" (those are the "ZZZATTP" and "Krunch" above). There are tons of options in each category, except for one. For some reason you only get five objects to choose from and they're all surprisingly mundane: a cellphone, desktop computer, laptop, office phone, and a chair. Yes, a chair. How exciting is that?

Objects aside, you do get many characters and some seriously beautiful backgrounds -- and it's just plain fun.

Adobe let-fly its ROME free public preview over the weekend, for use on the desktop in AIR, or direct in the browser. Project ROME is an attempt to blend the kind of static content creation that InDesign allows, plus interactive media elements and a bit of PowerPoint thrown in for good measure, all wrapped in a cloud-based solution. It's difficult to describe exactly what ROME is, as it does so much -- but if you think about it as a simplified multimedia publishing solution you're just about there. Adobe describes it as "an all-in-one content creation and publishing application that lets virtually anyone at home, work or school inject the power of graphics, photos, text, video, audio, animation and interactivity into everyday projects."

Project ROME allows you to create, collaborate and share a whole host of projects using Acrobat.com, Google Docs, Facebook and Twitter. Adobe's even created an Education-specific release of ROME, partnering with several large schools, allowing the creation of interactive teaching materials with "safe, secure use of content.'"

After a quick play, we can safely say our days of using Paint are over. Project ROME seems incredibly simple to use, with a plethora of templates, text, shape and drawing manipulation tools, support for image and file import, plus embedding of maps and other interactive media -- it's certainly a jack-of-all-trades. For a professional designer, ROME will feel over simplified and limited, but for your average Joe, Adobe's target market for the project, we might have a winner on our hands. Whether it'll stand up to more rigorous use, we'll have to wait to find out, but it's certainly worth a try.

If you're still not sure, Adobe's provided a quick promotional video to better describe what Project ROME can do, which we've included after the break.
Continue reading Adobe announces Project ROME public preview, brings all-in-one content creation to the cloud

Adobe announces Project ROME public preview, brings all-in-one content creation to the cloud originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 25 Oct 2010 07:00:00 EST.
Flickriver was briefly mentioned on Download Squad back in 2007, but it really deserves its own post.

It's a very simple interface for browsing Flickr photos which displays a bunch of photos on the page, and you scroll down to view them. As you near the bottom, more photos are loaded so that you can just keep scrolling. This is by no means a new trick, but I find it very convenient and easy to use. What's nice about it is that it pre-loads four images at a time, so I don't find myself waiting for the next image when I want to view it.

You can search by photo, group, user, tag, or location, and then you can sort the results according to relevance, recency, or "interestingness." The whole thing is very low-key; it has a dark background, an uncluttered interface, and the bare minimum of JavaScript required to make it work. You won't find anything sliding around, fading in and out, or being overly modern.

Flickriver just gives you the photos you want to look at, with no frills.

Flickriver is a fun way to browse through Flickr photos originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 22 Oct 2010 12:00:00 EST.
Here's one thing that I had no idea you could do with Delicious: bookmark color palettes!

This hidden little gem was apparently introduced one April Fool's day, but it was useful enough to stay (if not enough to become famous). To bookmark a color template, just save a bookmark and, instead of a URL, specify a color: prefix and then a bunch of HEX color values, like so:

color:FE9600,FFC501,FFEE4A,77477E,03001C

As you can see in the screenshot, the result is quite fetching. The only thing missing (in my opinion) is a way to display larger color swatches. The existing ones work well with Delicious' layout, but they leave something to be desired in terms of visual impact; I find huge, full-screen palette previews much more visceral.

Still, you can't beat Delicious' ubiquity and tagging ability. It's basically taking Adobe's Kuler, removing the Flash bit, and making it a lot more ubiquitous. Now, if there were just a way to search only palettes...

How to visually bookmark color palettes using Delicious originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 16:30:00 EST.
So, what does your site look like on a tiny mobile device? And what does it look like on a 1024x768 display? Sure, if you're a nerdy Web developer you probably already have a Firefox add-on that resizes your window to the pixel-perfect viewport in the exact dimensions that you require. That's great, but how do you show it to your boss?

Simures is the answer. This link leads you to a 570px by 320px version of Download Squad, and it's very human-readable - simures.com/570x320/downloadsquad.com. I just love it when things have human-readable URLs. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, like the Web is becoming a friendlier, simpler place every day.

Warm and fuzzy feelings aside, Simures is a very valuable tool. I just wish it had a little button for changing the user agent so that I could quickly test Download Squad's mobile website on the desktop. That's really the only missing feature.

Simures lets you see and share websites in specific resolutions originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 15:30:00 EST.
A while ago, we had a heated debate on our internal mailing list concerning the best way to note shortcut keys. Is it Ctrl+Enter? Maybe it should be a hyphen, so should it be Ctrl-Enter? And should there be a space? Should we capitalize, or not?

This might seem fussy, but when you're authoring a large body of text (or a collaborative blog), some standards have to be established. It's not just a matter of consistency for consistency's sake - the question is what makes the most sense for users.

Key Command Generator offers an interesting take on this problem. You fill in a simple form for your shortcut key, and you get an embeddable code. When you embed said code within your document, it shows up as a stylized "keyboard diagram" (as you can see in the screenshot).

While we won't be using it ourselves (because the output is pretty ginormous), I can certainly see how this can come in handy for other projects. I only wish it was a bit easier to use. A simpler syntax would be great, because then I could just change a few parameters in my code and avoid having to fill the form in every time. Perhaps something like shortcutkey.com/ctrl+shift+enter. Oh well, I guess there's always the HTML5 kbd element.

Key Command Generator helps you generate beautiful shortcut key codes originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 11:00:00 EST.
Once upon a time, creating pixel art was a completely manual process. You drew your base shape, and then if you wanted to add highlights, shadows, or blur, you had to draw them in, pixel by pixel.

Piq is a Flash-based pixel art editor that lets you enjoy fine-grained manual control, while making it a bit easier to add those extra touches to your image. You first draw the image pixel by pixel. Then, once you have the base shape, you can use one of several tools to painlessly manipulate the colors.

In the screenshot above, I drew the letters "DLS" (hey, I never said I could do pixel art!), and then I used the "burn" tool to create some highlights. It may not be a very good example of what this tool is capable of, but that's just because I can't draw. As their gallery shows, piq can be used to create some very detailed and beautiful pixel art, such as this beautiful apple.

Once you're done drawing, you can upload your image to the piq gallery with a single click. You can also save the image to your hard drive as a BMP and then easily convert it to a site favicon.

Piq is a fun way to create pixel-art and favicons originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 13:00:00 EST.
The Randomiser is a one-trick pony, but it's an extremely fetching one. You get a huge, chunky text box on a dark background, where you enter a list of items (comma separated). Then, you hit Enter, and Randomiser chooses one item and tells you what it is.

It's as simple as that, really. The Randomiser beautifully designed, fast, and it works. If it only had a high-profile domain name, it's the type of thing that could become a widely-recognized utility. "Drawing straws" is one of the few remaining things Google doesn't do with its search box (yet?), and it's something just about everyone needs from time to time.

Randomiser presents a couple of tabs at the bottom: one is a simple suggestions tab (to give you some ideas for things you can "Randomise"), and one is "Recently Randomised," which actually gives you a nice, large ... error message.

Still, if it ever gets fixed this option introduces an interesting twist. On the one hand, what you enter won't be private (somewhat of a downer). On the other hand, you can look at what other (random) people are entering, which could be interesting.

Next time you're deliberating over what you should get for lunch, give Randomiser a shot. The authoritative manner in which it presents the selected answer is very convincing. One might even call it commanding.

The Randomiser lets you draw straws, 21st century style originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 16 Sep 2010 12:29:00 EST.
If there's one thing that I dislike about other people's CSS, it's how messy it can be. Seriously... Some people just do whatever they feel like! There's no order or convention.

If you feel the same way, ProCSSor may come in handy the next time you have to tweak someone else's layout. It may be someone who doesn't take the same meticulous care that you do to align all the braces just so and sort all of the attributes alphabetically.

As you can see in the screenshot, ProCSSor looks quite nice (it slides down and everything - we're living in the future now), and it provides you with a plethora of options on where to start new lines, what to do with the selectors, and even how you want the braces handled. In fact, you get to pick one of seven different brace styles. One possible choice is the exotic sounding Horstmann. I can hear it now - "Sorry, I don't touch a stylesheet unless it's Horstmann-formatted. Fix it first, come back to me when it's Horstmann."

One disappointing hiccup arose when I fed it with a URL; it wasn't smart enough to extract the CSS from the linked file, and it just choked and died with an uninformative error message. It was quite sad to watch, really. But as long as you're careful and feed it with just CSS, you should be fine.

Bottom line: ProCSSor looks like it could become a major tool in the discerning CSS connoisseur's toolbox.

ProCSSor is a slick, powerful CSS beautifier originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 15 Sep 2010 09:30:00 EST.
This one's for the Web developers in the audience. ColorPicker is a very powerful JavaScript ... color picker. Okay, so maybe the name isn't very original (or searchable, for that matter), but it is very descriptive.

In the demo shown on the page, ColorPicker pops up as you click a text field that needs to be filled with a color value (think #ff00ff format). But what you get feels like a full-fledged application; you can populate multiple swatches, specify your color using hue/saturation/brightness (HSB), RGB, CMYK or HEX number, drag the window around, select it using a swatch spot or a hue slider, and that's just one possible look for the control!

As the screenshots on top of the page show, the control is incredibly configurable. You can add and remove UI elements, change its size, skin it, etc. And it's compatible with pretty much everything from IE 5.5 all the way to the newest Chrome and Opera (Firefox included, of course).

One interesting note is that this thing is totally self-sufficient; it doesn't use MooTools or prototype or anything like that. It's all "native code," as they say on the page. I'm not sure that's a plus, but it certainly makes deploying it easier. It's definitely an impressive piece of code!

ColorPicker is a powerhouse JavaScript control for working with color originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 13 Sep 2010 19:17:00 EST. You have a license to install and use it, but that's not quite the same as that software actually belonging to you.

It's a bit confusing to the average user, to be sure. Thankfully, we have the court system to help us sort out all kinds of confusing matters of legality, and a decision has been handed down that underscores the importance of reading your license ... and understanding it.

A U.S. appellate court has ruled [court ruling via Google PDF Viewer] that Autodesk -- makers of AutoCAD, 3ds Max, and Maya -- can go after those who resell previously owned copies of their software. (Make that previously licensed, because you never really owned it, remember?)

The target, obviously, isn't really individual end users. The case had been brought against Timothy Vernor, who purchased multiple pre-loved copies of AutoCAD 14 and proceeded to resell them on eBay. While you may not be planning that kind of maneuver any time soon, it's still somewhat sobering to know how much control the licensor really has when it comes to software.

DeviantArt has a fairly active community of people tweaking and customizing Windows 7. One of their favorite tricks is to replace a whole bunch of system and software icons with desaturated or monochrome variants. This "unifies" the system visually, and the whole thing feels like one "package" instead of a bunch of disparate applications.

Usually, this is a manual process, and it's fairly laborious and error-prone. Not all icon sets supply icons for the same applications, and changing the files around can get old quite fast.

7CONIFIER is a slick application that makes this process as painless as possible. You feed it with an icon set, click Apply, and you're done. It's even responsible enough to propose creating a "default set" containing your current "vanilla" icons when you first fire it up.

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure it worked on my system. I mean, I see a different icon for Opera, but I don't see a different one for Notepad or for Explorer. So, I guess it's partially successful (at least on my rig).
ColorExplorer is one of the most massive and exhaustive online color tools that I've ever seen. In fact, it's not really a tool, but more of a toolkit - it's a bunch of separate utilities that allow you to select a palette of colors and then refine it and test how usable it would be in real life.

It's basically a bunch of tabs. You have a "My Palettes" tab, which lets you save/load and export palettes. It also lets you apply filters to the current palette and tweak all the colors in certain ways (make them warmer, for example).

That's just one tab, and that isn't even all of the functions it offers. You can import colors from saved images or from CSS/HTML pages, for example. The site takes quite a bit of time to navigate through. I cannot hope to list everything it does, but here are some highlights:

The Color Picker tab provides you with a color picker and preset variations on the color you've chosen. Once you find a hue you like, you can add it to the current template. This template then "carries through" to the other tabs.

The Color Libraries tab lets you add precise hues to your template from a number of industry-standard libraries, such as TOYO and PANTONE. You can also choose from W3C Named Colors, Web safe colors, and others. You can sort the swatches by hue, lightness, saturation, and name. And, of course, add any swatch you like to your palette.

The Color Matching tab lets you adjust RGB or HSB (hue, saturation, brightness) components for a specific swatch on your template. You can then append the result as a new swatch, or you can replace the existing one.

There's also an Analysis and Conversion tab that provides some really neat metrics on your palette, such as contrast analysis. And at the end of all this, you can export your palette to ASE, ACO, TXT or even PNG. It's very, very impressive stuff.

ColorExplorer is a full-fledged online color laboratory originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 11 Sep 2010 14:00:00 EST.
Just because we're all agog over the new Firefox 4.0, that doesn't mean there's a lack of action on the 3.6 front. In fact, SmallringFX DARKBlue is a dark, sexy theme that was updated just yesterday.

Personally, I like my Firefox as "chromeless" as possible (see what I did there?). But seriously, I hide the menu bar, the bookmarks toolbar, and any other toolbars that I happen to have lurking around. However, if you like your toolbars, SmallringFX DARKBlue is a very nice, comprehensive theme. I tested it with the Delicious and Diigo toolbars, and the icons looked just fine on the dark background.

One slight problem is that some of the status bar icons look pretty bad. For instance, Video DownloadHelper looks awful on a dark background, but that's not the theme's fault. (Video DownloadHelper guys, are you listening?) Another small glitch is that, on my system, the context menus appear to be gray on gray -- so all of the entries seem as though they're disabled. I'm not sure if it's just me or a general issue (I think it may be Windows-related).

Read It Later's sidebar, on the other hand, looks wonderful with this theme. Another thing I like is how tall the status bar is; it's really nice and roomy. If you like dark themes, don't miss out on this one!

SmallringFX DARKBlue is a slick, dark Firefox 3.6 theme originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 11:00:00 EST. Meet Sketch, a new OS X app that's designed purely for drawing vectors. It's got a lot of power tools, but it falls squarely into the "do one thing and do it well" school of software development.Sketch comes from Bohemian Coding, and it's compatible with their iPad drawing app, SketchPad.

It starts up about twice as fast as Illustrator (on my aging MacBook, anyway), and the UI is clean and easy to learn. As is the case with any good drawing app, the canvas is the center of attention. Because we're dealing with vectors here (and those can be resized any way you like) the canvas in Sketch is infinite. It also allows for saving your commonly-used shapes, to speed up those repetitive drawing tasks, and even plugging in shape libraries shared by others.

Sketch just reached version 1.0 so it's got a lot of growing to do -- but it could easily become one of the primary tools in the belt of designers, illustrators, and anyone else who draws for the web.

Sketch is a brand-new lightweight vector-drawing app for OS X originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 07 Sep 2010 16:30:00 EST. Looks like I got that right! Wired News is reporting that a designer emailed Steve Jobs to tell him that the new logo "sucks" and throws away a decade of "instant product recognition." The designer, Josh Kopac, got one of Steve's trademark terse responses: "We disagree."

A lot of people in the design community agree with Kopac that the iTunes 10 logo has got to go. Check out Dribbble, the playground where lots of pro designers preview their new work, and you'll find several replacement iTunes 10 icons already. One that seems to have gained real traction is a magenta version by Chris Carlozzi. It's got 154 likes on Dribbble, and has been touted by other blogs as the icon iTunes 10 should have had.

If you don't love the new logo, take your pick of icons from Dribbble, or show us some other alternatives you like better. If you think the new logo's just fine, here's your chance to offer a defense in the comments.

Another day, another CSS3 playground. Are you excited yet? Wait for it - this one has wood paneling for a background! (That's classy!) Even though it's not exactly the first tool of its kind (or the second, ... or the tenth), CSS 3.0 Maker is pretty handy and comprehensive, so I decided it was worth covering. Let me quickly sum it up:

I like:

That it provides clear compatibility information for Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Chrome (no IE, of course). You can see exactly which browser versions support your bleeding-edge CSS.

That it's visual and real-time.

That it provides code that works across as many browsers as possible, including browser-specific syntax (think -moz-border-radius for Firefox).

The wood paneling! It makes me feel like I'm in a sauna.

I don't like:

That it won't let you set all parameters at once. You can tweak the border parameters but upon clicking the gradient tab, your changes are undone. It's pretty irritating and almost relegates this to "toy" status.

After trying a number of different applications, I was delighted to find ColorPix (an app from ColorSchemer, who is the developer behind the previously mentioned ColorSchemer Studio 2).

ColorPix has an interesting lock and unlock mechanic for selecting the color that you want to find. While the application is active, hitting any key will unlock the picker, which you can then move anywhere on your screen. Once you've found the color, hitting any key again will lock it in so that you don't accidentally nudge the mouse while clicking to make your selection. It also includes a magnifier window to help with pixel precession at several different levels of zoom.

Once you've locked in a color, you can click anywhere on the RGB, HEX, HSB, or CMYK values and copy the individual color for the mode that you're working in directly to the clipboard. If you want the HEX value, you can use the Ctrl+C shortcut to get it even faster.

Vision of Humanity is one of the most beautiful and thorough visualizations that I have recently seen.

It's a zoomable Flash world map, which lets you browse and compare a vast number of "peace indicators," such as level of violent crime, access to weapons, jailed population, relations with neighboring countries, and more.

You view a world heat map, which shows where that index is most prevalent. You can zoom in on a specific country and browse through all of its indicators, and you can compare two or more countries.

The site takes all of these indicators and derives a single number, which it calls the "peace index." At a glance, you can basically see which countries are the most peaceful and which ones rank worst on the list.

As per usual with these tools, the tool itself is very impressive, but I cannot say that I fully trust the data. The data comes from an entity that calls itself the Institute for Economics & Peace, which is an incredibly nebulous name. Even reading their About page didn't improve my level of trust in this "institute." There's a Wikipedia entry about them, so they seem to be real. I cannot, however, vouch for the quality of the data.

Still, from a technology/design viewpoint, this is an impressive visualization that I could easily spend a great deal of time with, discovering new (if troubling) facts.

Is this a blatant glove-slap at Places rival/partner Foursquare? Is Foursquare so synonymous with location-based check-in services that Facebook decided it would best represent the Places services?

It's a lot more innocent than that, according to the artist behind the icon, Aaron Sittig. He answered a question about the icon on q&a site Quora. Sittig says there was no intent to refer to Foursquare at all.

Originally we had two straight roads crossing each other, but the icon looked too much like a package with ribbon around it. We tried adding water at one edge of the icon but this complicated the map and distracted from the Place droplet shape. Our solution was to add a bend in one of the roads.

I recall some jokes about the roads looking like the Facebook 'f' rotated 90 degrees, but no one noticed that the roads formed the number 4. We sure got a laugh from the news stories, but could only wish we'd been so clever.

So, there you have it. The Places icon wasn't a sneaky business move, and it doesn't mean Facebook is buying Foursquare, or anything like that. It was just an artist's solution to a design problem.

Drips is a fun Flash application that was inspired by the art of legendary American artist Jackson Pollock.

Its functionality is very basic -- you splash random colors on the canvas and that's about it. You can select a specific color or allow Drips to randomly rotate colors every time you let go of the mouse. You can also change the background color (again, either randomly or by selection).

There's no undo, of course, but I take that to be in the spirit of Pollock himself. One feature that is missing is control over brush size. I'm pretty sure that Pollock would have approved of such a feature.

I don't think it's a tool for creating masterpieces, but I like its lack of features. It captures some of the raw fun of just painting (or doodling), without messing about with too many features, brushes, toolbars, etc. I also like the strong, bold, random colors.

Drips is a Flash-based painting app that lets you pretend you're Jackson Pollock originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 20 Aug 2010 12:00:00 EST.
Picasa 3.8 was unleashed upon the world a couple of days ago. It brings with it several major features, such as Batch Upload, something called "Face Movie," which creates an animation out of a series of images of the same person, and last but certainly not least, Picnik photo editing.

That's right - Picasa can now upload your photo seamlessly to Picnik, and it allows you to edit it there, then you can download it back when you're done. Google says Picnik is "photo-editing awesomeness that lives in the cloud." I had to see how awesome it really was for myself, so I took the feature for an extensive spin with a photo of a fluffly white poodle. To see the results, keep reading after the fold.

Continue reading DLS Review: Picasa 3.8 released, now with Picnik editor

DLS Review: Picasa 3.8 released, now with Picnik editor originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 18 Aug 2010 17:00:00 EST.
