The developer of iCab Mobile, a feature-rich alternative to the Safari Web browser on iPad and iPhone, has been ordered by Apple to remove its ability to download and install JavaScript modules.

Presumably it's not the fact that iCab can execute JavaScript that's causing Apple to apoplectically puff and splutter, but rather its ability to download modules. Both Apple and Google frown upon apps that contain market-like functionality, and someone at Apple probably thought that iCab's JavaScript modules looked like a bit too much like discrete apps.

Alexander Clauss, iCab's developer, has rather a lot to say on the matter. "Maybe if I would have called the modules 'smart bookmarks' and would have made installing them much more complicated, Apple would have never asked to remove the ability to download them from the internet. The great user experience of installing modules has probably created a suspicion that these modules are more than just a piece of JavaScript code. From a pure technical point of view, if Apple does not allow to download modules (JavaScript code), Apple would also have to disallow to load web pages in general, because these do also contain JavaScript code."

In conclusion, to circumvent Apple's draconian decree, iCab Mobile now simply comes bundled with some 20 JavaScript modules. The ability to download modules made by third-party developers has been disabled, however -- but even then, Clauss says that you can simply contact him and ask for your module to be bundled with the next version of iCab.

In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It's not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal -- but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn't matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia's creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.
Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 05:25:00 EST. Ever thought to yourself: "I wish there was a way that I could just see ads without the rest of this crummy ad-supported app getting in the way"? Well now you can, thanks to Apple's latest and greatest release -- the iAd Gallery app. This magical new app allows you to view all of Apple's current iAd advertising campaigns right on your iPhone:

'Great ads. On-demand. In your pocket. The iAd Gallery is a celebration of advertising, featuring iAd campaigns from some of the world's best brands and their advertising agencies.'

You can even save your favorite ads for later viewing, or pick at random by spinning the 'wheel of iAds.' Unfortunately for Europeans, and anyone outside of the US in fact, Apple's iAd Gallery is only available in the US App Store. So, for our US-based iPhone-wielding readers, head on over to the App Store to get your fill of advertising.

Apple iAds get an app all to themselves with iAd Gallery for iPhone originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 04:30:00 EST. Apple has released iOS 4.3.1, and it's now available via the "update" button in iTunes. 4.3.1 isn't a feature update, but it does fix a graphics glitch for the 4th-gen iPod Touch and some issues with connecting to cellular networks.

The update isn't available for Verizon iPhone users -- who are still on 4.2.6 -- but it works with all other recent devices (including the iPad 2). It apparently doesn't fix rumored battery life issues with iOS 4.3, but it's still worth updating, especially if you've had connection issues with your cell carrier.
The Apple TV 4.2.1 update addresses a couple of incredibly annoying bugs, which we've personally suffered from, including a flickering picture and a lack of audio when switching through sources on some TVs and AV receivers. The update should also cure the problem of the Apple TV sleeping with the fishes and failing to wake up when commanded by the remote. Apple also lists various 'stability and performance fixes' for the Apple TV, so with a bit of luck if you've got any outstanding issues from the previous update, they should be gone with 4.2.1.

The Apple TV 4.2.1 update can be downloaded either over-the-air on the Apple TV itself, or restored via iTunes.
Apple TV 4.2.1 update addresses flickering and sound issues originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 04:55:00 EST.
Apple has just released Mac OS X 10.6.7. As its version number implies, this is a minor software update, even more so than 10.6.6 which at least ushered the Mac App Store into the world. However, 10.6.7 does apparently fix many issues that people who have bought the newest MacBook Pros have encountered, and as such it's a recommended update for all early 2011 MacBook Pro models.

The update also improves the reliability of the Back to My Mac service which allows MobileMe users to access their computers remotely, and brings many bug fixes to the aforementioned Mac App Store. FaceTime performance has also been improved, as has graphics stability and compatibility with external displays. An issue that occurred when transferring files to certain SMB servers has been fixed too. Many security-related problems have been dealt with as well, and if you're interested in a full list, visit this dedicated page. Also, to get the full rundown on everything that's included in the 10.6.7 update, head over to Apple's Support website.

You can install Mac OS X 10.6.7 by running Software Update on your Mac, or by downloading the update directly from Apple's Downloads website. If you choose the latter, you're facing a 475 MB download, while using the former may result in a smaller download (as seen in the image above).
Mac OS X 10.6.7 now available, fixes MacBook Pro issues and many bugs originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 18:30:00 EST.

Yesterday's rather shocking finding that the Nexus S loads Web pages 52% faster than the iPhone 4 has turned out to be a sham.

Apple has lashed out at Blaze Software, the company behind the test, saying: "Their testing is flawed. They didn't actually test the Safari browser on the iPhone. Instead they only tested their own proprietary app, which uses an embedded Web viewer that doesn't actually take advantage of Safari's Web performance optimizations."

Blaze has updated its website in response to Apple's rebuttal, kind of admitting it made a mistake, but also attacking Apple for crippling iOS's embedded Web viewer.

There's another, more nefarious, story at play, though. With iOS 4.3, Apple shipped a new version of Mobile Safari, which thanks to Nitro JavaScript and asynchronous rendering should be very fast indeed. Apple didn't update the embedded Web viewer that iOS Web apps use, however. The result is that while websites are very snappy, Web apps that you launch from the home screen are sluggish.

By not updating the embedded Web viewer, developers are claiming that Apple is intentionally stymying the performance -- and thus adoption -- of Web apps on the iOS platform. It could simply be that Apple didn't get around to updating the embedded Web viewer in time for iOS 4.3's release, though.
Test that showed Android browser faster than iPhone Safari was flawed originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 07:50:00 EST.

The United States and Canada, with their early shift to daylight saving time (DST), are yet again acting as cannon fodder for other iPhone and iPod touch users around the world.

Reports of DST-related malfunctions vary wildly, with some iPhone and iPod touch alarms going off early, some late, and with some working just fine. Crazily, one iPhone 3GS user says that his phone correctly jumped forward an hour on Sunday night, but then reverted back an hour yesterday, causing him to be late for work. It's unlikely that these DST issues are caused by a simple bug, either: one iPhone user in Arizona, the only mainland U.S. state that doesn't observe DST, says that his iPhone still automatically jumped forward an hour.

There is currently no known solution. Engadget is reporting on a wide range of possibles fixes -- from a simple restart, to calling your iPhone from another phone -- but as we don't know the underlying cause, it's unlikely that an exact fix exists. It might be variation between devices running iOS 4.2 and 4.3, for example, and perhaps jailbroken iOS devices act differently too. We'll update this post as we learn more. For the time being, make sure the time shown on your phone is correct!
Apple iPhone and iPod touch confused over daylight saving time... again originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 15 Mar 2011 06:50:00 EST. Just one week later, Apple said that iPad gestures wouldn't make the cut, and indeed, iOS 4.3 was summarily released without gestures for the iPad and recently-released iPad 2.

Don't despair, however: they can be re-enabled by turning your iPad into a developer iPad by using Apple's Xcode developer tools. Our bleached and glistening cousins at TUAW originally reported that you had to pay $5 to get Xcode 4 from the Mac App Store, but our very own Samuel Gibbs found that the free-to-download Xcode 3 works just fine.

To unlock iOS 4.3's gesture controls on your iPad, download and install Xcode 3 (bottom of the page), open Xcode, connect your iPad to your PC, then Window > Organizer and press the "Use for development" button. You can also download Xcode 3 from elsewhere on the Internet if you don't want to sign up for an Apple ID.

Over the weekend, large corporations have been scrambling to offer support to the devastated north east of Japan, where a tsunami destroyed towns and farmsteads and looks set to claim over 10,000 lives.

Google, as always, was the first to respond with a Google Person Finder for Japan. There is now a full Google Crisis Response page for the earthquake and tsunami, which is full of extensive resources for those in Japan, those trying to contact friends and family in Japan, or for people who want to help out by donating money to the Japanese Red Cross Society. Google has already updated its satellite imagery to show the to-scale effects of the disaster.

Apple was next on the scene, giving iTunes users the ability to donate money directly to the American Red Cross (which is different from the Japanese one!) There doesn't seem to be much else coming out of Cupertino, though, probably because of the impending worldwide release of iPad 2.

Microsoft published a similar 'crisis response' page on its Corporate Citizenship site. Microsoft is working on a "cloud-based disaster response communications portal, based on Windows Azure," which will hopefully help improve government and nonprofit communication with agencies and citizens. Microsoft says it's also giving out temporary licenses to "all impacted customers and partners as well as lead governments, nonprofit partners and institutions involved in disaster response efforts." All in all, though, Microsoft's page doesn't include a whole lot of useful data.

Finally, the Bing department at Microsoft got it a bit wrong by offering $1 for every @bing retweet of Microsoft's Corporate Citizenship site. It wasn't long before comedian Michael Ian Black accused Bing of cashing in on the Japanese tragedy. A few hours later, Bing apologized and said that $100,000 had been donated.
Google and Microsoft offer Japan tsunami and earthquake resources, Bing bungles it originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 14 Mar 2011 07:20:00 EST. Whereas before you could make as many in-app purchases as you pleased without having to enter your iTunes password for 15 minutes after last entering that password (for example, when purchasing an app or game), from now on entering the password will be required for each and every in-app purchase. This will surely make parents everywhere breathe a collective sigh of relief, since it certainly seems like they were the biggest proponents of such a change.

Why? Well, imagine this. Your child asks you (nicely) to enter your iTunes password so he or she could download the latest and greatest game that all their friends are playing (the game may even be free). You do so, and then they start playing, but, unknown to you, they purchase a $99 in-app item such as an 'animal', or who knows what. Children may not even understand that they've used real money off your credit card for that purchase. Then, at the end of the month, your credit card statement comes in, and... you get the idea. The above isn't possible anymore, and that's certainly a good thing. And, perhaps, one more reason to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to the latest version of the OS.
Let's hope Google decides to implement such security measures for in-app purchases from the beginning, whenever it finally decides to launch that system for Android-powered devices.
iOS in-app purchases now always require password originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 17:30:00 EST. The former was pwned by veteran Pwn2Own winner Charlie Miller, who developed an exploit that enabled him to run arbitrary code on the iPhone after visiting a specially-formatted Web page. Once he was 'in' the iPhone, he was able to perform any action he wanted. The iPhone was running iOS 4.2.1, but the same vulnerability that allowed control over it is also present in iOS 4.3. However, the specific exploit that Miller used won't work on the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system.

Pwning the browser in the BlackBerry Torch 9800 proved a bit more difficult, but not because that particular piece of software was more secure. It just so happens that there's no debugger available for that version of the BlackBerry browser, so pwning it required combining two information leak bugs, an integer overflow bug, and a lot of trial and error work for the multinational team of researchers that decided to do this. Again, the only requirement for the exploit to work was that a specially-crafted website had to be visited. There is a newer firmware version for the Torch than that which was exploited, but the flaws are still there.

The Android-powered Google Nexus S and a Windows Phone 7 device were also supposed to be tested, but the researchers that had been chosen to do so did not show up.
iPhone and BlackBerry browsers fall at Pwn2Own originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. Apple have just released an update to the iOS version of iMovie to support the iPad 2, but what about the original iPad? Well, currently you can't install iMovie on an original iPad using iTunes directly, but iMovie will run on your previous generation device as long as it's running iOS 4.3. Hit the break for a quick two-minute guide to getting iMovie onto your original iPad without a jailbreak.
Continue reading Install iMovie on the original iPad without jailbreaking

Install iMovie on the original iPad without jailbreaking originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 06:00:00 EST. To coincide with the release of the iPad 2 today, Apple's let loose both an update to the iOS iMovie app, supporting Apple's newest tablet, as well as a brand new GarageBand app for iPad. Released yesterday, both apps can be had for $5 a piece, and with some positive reviews coming in already, $4.99 seems quite a deal for the amount of utility you get, especially with GarageBand.

Both apps support the iPad 2, with iMovie also supporting the iPhone 4 and 4th generation iPod touch running iOS 4.2.6 or higher. GarageBand supports Apple's first-generation iPad too, but Apple has chosen not to support the original iPad with iMovie. The original iPad can run the application if you can get it installed however, and we've got a quick guide to show you how to just that without jailbreaking your iPad.

If you're an iPad owner and you've ever wanted to edit video on that 9.7-inch screen whilst out and about, or fancy yourself a budding musician, then iMovie and GarageBand are well worth checking out.
Apple releases Garageband and updated iMovie for iOS originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 05:40:00 EST. If you're having issues syncing your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch after updating it to iOS 4.3, this tip is for you. It turns out that many people have seen a bug where, after updating any iDevice to the latest version of iOS, syncing with iTunes will stall at step four of four on syncing photos. The stalling is accompanied by a message that the sync could not be completed because "the required file cannot be found". Does this sound familiar?

Well, it turns out that the solution to this bug, that apparently keeps intermittently appearing, is quite simple -- if rather time-consuming. The culprit for this particular issue is your photo library. And the way to fix it is to uncheck photo syncing in iTunes, then sync. Afterwards, check photo syncing, and sync again. This will cause the second sync to take a long while if you have many photos in your library, since iTunes needs to re-optimize your photos and copy them back to your iDevice. However, it does work.
How to solve iOS 4.3 syncing issues originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 10 Mar 2011 17:30:00 EST. Although, as hinted at by the version number, this isn't a major release that adds new features and functionality, it's a highly recommended update because of the sheer number of security vulnerabilities that it fixes: 62. These vulnerabilities are detailed in a dedicated Apple knowledge base article. While Apple doesn't assign severity levels to the vulnerabilities found in its software, thus making it harder to quickly grasp the importance of such problems, Naked Security reports that 57 of those 62 bugs can be exploited if the user simply visits a specially constructed website. So, in a word -- update!

Safari 5.0.4 also brings a host of stability and compatibility improvements compared to its predecessors. Issues with stability when running multiple instances of plug-ins, compatibility with pages with image reflections and transition effects, printing with incorrect layouts, content display on pages with plug-ins, and the screen saver appearing while playing video in Safari, have all been fixed.

Safari 5.0.4 works on Mac OS X 10.5.8 or newer, as well as on Windows XP, Vista, or 7. The update has already been pushed through Apple's Software Update mechanism. You can also just download Safari 5.0.4 directly from Apple's website.
Safari 5.0.4 fixes a horde of security issues, improves stability originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 10 Mar 2011 12:35:00 EST.
The Golden Master was released only five days ago, but if no hard blocking bugs were found by Apple's slew of slavering developers, an early release isn't unusual -- and the sooner Apple gets iOS 4.3 into the hands of millions of consumers, the sooner any remaining bugs will be uncovered.

In other news, BGR is also reporting that the Personal Hotspot feature will allow five devices to share your device's 3G connection via Wi-Fi. The number of devices can still be reduced by the carrier, however -- if AT&T or Verizon (or Vodafone, or Orange...) want a maximum of three devices sharing a connection, then that's all you'll get.

Presumably, jailbreaking will re-open any carrier-closed slots, however.
iOS 4.3 to be released today, and will allow up to five Personal Hotspot connections? originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 08:40:00 EST. As it turns out, though, the "unlimited" isn't about an all-you-can-download music buffet, or even the Lala-powered iTunes streaming service you might be waiting for. No, it's about being able to re-download songs you've already purchased through iTunes with less hassle.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is currently working on deals with the big four recording labels which would give users permanent download access to songs purchased with their iTunes accounts. That means if you ever have a catastrophic hard drive failure (or four) you just need to install iTunes, log in, and pull down all your purchases again. It also means you'll be able to download onto your iPhone and iPad without needing to sync via iTunes on your desktop.

The Bloomberg report also mentions that Apple is still considering turning MobileMe into a free service, something which was reported previously by the Wall Street Journal and verified by the ever-popular "sources familiar with the situation."
iTunes to add unlimited downloads for purchased music, MobileMe going free? originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 10:30:00 EST. Mere hours after the release of the iOS 4.3 golden master to developers, Redmond Pie has compiled a guide to jailbreak the new version with a combination of PwnageTool and Universal Ramdisk Fixer.

It's definitely not a one-click jailbreak, however, and it's still tethered at this stage -- you'll have to re-jailbreak every time you reboot -- but it's a promising indicator that a proper jailbreak from greenpois0n could emerge soon.
iOS 4.3 jailbreak with PwnageTool originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 09:30:00 EST.
The iOS 4.3 golden master (GM), as well as the Xcode and iOS SDK 4.3 GM are now available to download from Apple's Dev Center. The golden master, usually referred to as GM, is the last step before a new iOS version actually gets released to the whole world. Of course, this time we already know when that will happen -- next Friday, on March 11. We found out as much during yesterday's iPad 2 unveiling.

Still, if you're a developer, you're probably very interested in getting your hands on the pre-release versions of the OS and SDK, so go get them and start optimizing your apps for the latest version of iOS! Or you could start playing with the new functionality in iOS 4.3, such as iTunes home sharing, and, for the iPhone, the Personal Hotspot.

Sadly, there isn't anything new available for Apple TV yet. For now, this update is limited to the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad, and iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation.
Apple makes iOS 4.3 golden master available to developers originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 03 Mar 2011 16:00:00 EST. Opera made waves when it successfully launched its Opera Mini browser for the iPhone. Now company has made its way into Apple's Mac App Store, which makes Opera 11.01 the first Web browser in the Mac App Store that isn't built around Safari's Webkit core.

Its description in the store is fairly tame, trumpeting Opera's speed and security along with gesture support and its trademark speed dial page. There's no mention of extension support or the built-in email client, though both are shown in the screenshots.

Something else which isn't called out is the fact that Opera can also download torrents -- and that's not something Apple has ever looked too kindly upon. Opera's BitTorrent support is rarely discussed, and it isn't depicted in the App Store description or images, either. Still, with built-in support for a technology that Apple has historically linked to illegal use, it will be interesting to see just how long Opera is welcome to stay at Apple's party.
Opera is the first non-Safari browser and BitTorrent client in the Mac App Store originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 03 Mar 2011 08:40:00 EST. Last night at Apple's March 2nd iPad 2 unveiling, the Cupertino-based company showed off an iPad-optimized version of iMovie. Ever since the introduction of the iPhone 4, iMovie has been available for said device, now the app will be going universal, supporting both the iPad and the iPhone.

Apple's added a few things into the mix for the larger screen too. A precision track editor was shown off with multi-track audio recording. More than 50 new sound effects have also been included, along with the addition some new themes, AirPlay support, and HD movie uploads direct to YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo and CNN iReport, as well as a 'Send to iTunes' button if you just want to export your creation locally.

Apple is bringing more and more of the extremely popular desktop experience of iMovie to the touchscreen, which can only be a good thing for any Apple user looking to edit video on the move. With Google showing off an Android Honeycomb video editing suite, Apple would have been foolish not to have pushed something similar to its tablet offering.
Apple released the latest version of iTunes, iTunes 10.2, today, and it's now available for download. iTunes 10.2 introduces support for the iPad 2 (due out March 11) and is required for syncing devices running the new iOS 4.3 (also due out on the 11th).

iTunes 10.2 also features improvements to Home Sharing, including support for streaming media to iOS 4.3 devices using Home Sharing.
iTunes 10.2 now available for download originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 17:28:00 EST. The iPad 2 launches on March 11th, with a new dual-core A5 processor and HDMI Out capability, but what about the software? Apple announced that the iPad currently has 65,000 apps (compared to 100 for Android Honeycomb tablets), and that the iPad 2 will run the new iOS 4.3.

iOS 4.3 features performance improvements in Safari, thanks to the addition of the Nitro JavaScript engine. It also brings iTunes home sharing, which lets the iPad 2 play content over Wi-Fi from your other networked devices. Oh, and 4.3 also (finally!) lets you decide whether the switch on your iPad is a mute button or an orientation lock.

iPad 2 owners also get Photo Booth, which takes advantage of the new iPad's built-in camera. It lets you preview 9 photo effects at once, and manipulate the effects by touching the photos. The addition of cameras also means FaceTime has finally arrived on the iPad, and you can use it to call other iPads, iPhones or Macs. Also note the flip option, which lets you switch to the iPad's rear camera during a FaceTime call.

iPhone 4 owners aren't left out, either: iOS 4.3 also introduces Personal Hotspot for iPhone 4 only. Personal Hotspot allows you to share your 3G connection with your computer, via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
iPad 2 brings release of iOS 4.3, with FaceTime and Photo Booth originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 14:00:00 EST. 9to5 Mac has uncovered another cool feature in OS X Lion: Apple's back up tool, Time Machine, will support backups to an internal hard drive.

Dubbed 'Local Snapshots,' it sounds like it will be very similar to Versions, another new feature in OS X Lion that keeps track of changes to documents, and lets you revert to older versions. Local Snapshots, on the other hand, will take a snapshot of every modified file on your hard drive every hour. It sounds like it could drain an awful lot of system resources (CPU time and hard drive space), but we'll have to wait and see.

If anything, it just sounds like this is a convenience measure more than anything else: we should make daily backups, but plugging in an external hard drive every night is a pain in the ass. With Local Snapshots, you can go a few days without plugging in -- and when you finally do, Time Machine will copy all of your local snapshots to the external drive.
Mac OS X Lion Time Machine capable of 'Local Snapshots' without external hard drive originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 07:15:00 EST.
WebKit2, rather than being a whole new rendering engine, is a layer around WebKit that adds more stability, security and speed -- not entirely unlike the Google Chrome sandbox, which is also strapped onto a version of WebKit. The most exciting feature of WebKit2 is that it splits the browser UI and the rendered content into separate processes. It's possible that each tab will have its own process, too, like Chrome.

This is the first solid news of a Safari update since the minor revisions of desktop and iOS versions back in November. It also represents a major change for the browser, so we wouldn't be surprised if it is Safari 6, rather than 5, that ships with OS X Lion.

We're also hoping to see some benchmarks from the Lion version of Safari. Split processes is definitely a huge step forward, but its JavaScript performance is the thing that really needs to improve. Presumably WebKit2 isn't the only change that Apple plans to make to a new version of Safari, so here's hoping!
Mac OS X Lion to include updated version of Safari with WebKit2 originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 06:15:00 EST. Apple's on a charge today and has just released the Mac OS X Lion developer preview via the Mac App Store. The good news is it's full of fancy new features, including Launchpad, an app launcher that displays all of your Mac apps in one easy to use screen; Mission Control, a unification of Expose, Dashboard, Spaces, and full screen apps; and some new multi-touch gestures. The bad news is that you're going to have to be a member of the Apple Mac Developer program to get in on the action. (Developers: check your email for a promo code that you can redeem on the Mac App Store to download Lion.)

Other highlights include: AirDrop, a new way to share files between Macs; a new iPad-inspired Mac Mail; Versions and Auto Save, which will auto-save your documents and let you view revisions, just in case; Resume, which gives you back your apps the way you left them when you restart; and an improved FileVault with local and external disk encryption.

It's a lot to chew on, but for now the general feel is that Apple's bringing the full screen experience people like from the iPad to the desktop. Hit the break for the full press release.
Continue reading Apple releases Mac OS X Lion developer preview via the Mac App Store

Apple releases Mac OS X Lion developer preview via the Mac App Store originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 09:15:00 EST. Apple has just released FaceTime for OS X onto the Mac App Store. The app will take advantage of the 'built-in FaceTime HD camera' or any other iSight-equipped Intel Mac, to bring you Mac-to-Mac and Mac-to-iPhone 4 (or latest generation iPod touch) video calling over Wi-Fi. It supports up to 720p video for those soon to be released Macs sporting fancy new FaceTime HD cameras, or standard VGA for all others. FaceTime will even ring on your Mac when not running once installed, and will ring on any number of Macs all using the same Apple ID, making sure you're never going to miss a call.
FaceTime has been in beta for a while now, but this marks its first official release -- so if you're a fan of video calling, and have friends with Macs or iPhone 4s then head on over to the Mac App Store and pick up FaceTime for one cent shy of a buck.
FaceTime hits the Mac App Store for 99c originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 08:37:00 EST. Apple's Steve Jobs has said in recent emails that Final Cut Pro, Apple's venerable video editing app, will be getting an "awesome" update for which we should all "buckle up," but that update could be coming sooner than we thought. Sources have told TechCrunch that Apple is now in the final stages of "the biggest overhaul to Final Cut Pro since the original version was created over 10 years ago."

Both the performance and the UI of the app have reportedly been improved, and word on the street is that it will finally go 64-bit. TechCrunch says Apple has also brought in a small group of professional video editors to test-drive the new app, which gives us confidence that the new version's going to be aimed at the pro audience.

By the way, that's a Final Cut Pro 7 screenshot up above. Unfortunately, no images of Final Cut Pro 8's UI have been leaked yet.
Final Cut Pro 8 could arrive from Apple this Spring originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 14:45:00 EST. Today's rumor is based on an Apple patent, and it involves secure online storage.

Apple has been rumored to go all in with cloud services for many years, yet for some reason Mobile Me is all we've got so far. But if Apple's recently uncovered patent regarding secure cloud storage will turn into an actual Mac OS X feature, that's clearly about to change.

The new feature would aim to protect your files in the cloud similarly to how a safe deposit box protects your assets in the real world. The basic idea is that a safe icon will be added to the Mac OS Dock. Once you drop a file over that icon, it will be automatically uploaded to Apple's servers, and it will be 'protected' (we assume that means 'encrypted'). All the files stored for you on Apple's servers will be instantly available to you once you log in to the Safe Deposit Service with a user name and password. For enhanced security, the login will expire after a set period of time has passed, to prevent accidental access to your files by others.

The cloud-based storage service would also apparently store copies of iTunes purchases, making iTunes customers everywhere less wary about possible hardware failures.

Of course, similar technology is already built into OS X with FileVault, which encrypts and stores secure files on the fly. The cloud component is missing as of yet though, and if Apple will go with full encryption for your cloud-based storage, its service will certainly pose a great threat to the Dropboxes of the world. Anyway, as this is all based on a patent that might never be used, do take it with a pinch of salt. We'll know for sure what all the new features in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion are this summer, when it will finally be released.
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion to ship with cloud-based FileVault? originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 22 Feb 2011 10:30:00 EST.
While there are less and less reasons to jailbreak these days, there are still a few key apps, customizations and utilities that you simply can't get any other way.
Jones' apoplectic outburst is just one of many, too. Rhapsody yesterday said it won't bow to Apple's subscription policy, and CEO of on-demand music streamer we7, speaking to paidContent, thinks that the 30% share "makes music subscriptions economically unviable." If big-hitters like Spotify and Rdio can't produce the 30% that High Lord Jobs demands, how can they possibly continue to provide their services to iOS apps without increasing their price? The crazy thing is, because of Apple's price-matching ultimatum, everyone -- including users of other smartphone platforms -- will have to pay the higher price.

On another front entirely, according to some law professors quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Apple's move could even be kiboshed by antitrust and anticompetitive legislation. These could be interesting times indeed.

While leveraging its massive and wealthy userbase to get a slice of the subscription pie might've sounded great on paper, 30% might simply be too much to ask for. At the very least, it looks like Hulu, Netflix, Spotify, Last.fm and Rdio users are destined to pay a few dollars more per month. Or perhaps content providers will simply stick it to iOS and decamp to Google's dirty, bohemian app ecosystem.
'Apple just f***** over online music subs for the iPhone' -- Last.fm co-founder on Apple's 30% cut originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 17 Feb 2011 07:15:00 EST.
Fortunately (or unfortunately for Apple), the iPhone Dev-Team has released a new version of the PwnageTool jailbreak that incorporates the Chronic Dev Team's 'feedface' iOS 4.2.1 untether and circumvents Apple's crippling code.

Apple's intentional hijacking of iBooks is an interesting move, but given its less-than-amiable stance on jailbreaking it's surprising that it's taken this long to actually implement anti-jailbreak mechanisms -- especially after removing the infamous jailbreak API back in December. It now becomes a question of when Apple will insert similar measures into other iOS apps -- and whether they will be a whole lot more destructive than merely blocking e-books. The Age of Bricking may be upon us!
Apple tests anti-jailbreak code in iBooks, new PwnageTool circumvents it originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 16 Feb 2011 05:46:00 EST. The plot thickens, though: Apple has mandated that all content-based subscription services must enable in-app sign-up. In other words, if Hulu Plus is available for $7.99 from the Hulu website, users must also be able to sign up via the Hulu iOS app.

Apple, of course, will take its usual 30% cut of all subscriptions that originate from within iOS apps.
Apple will take 30% of subscription fees from content-based apps like Hulu, Netflix originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 09:32:00 EST.
You knew it was coming, and now it's here: NBA Jam is now available for purchase from the App Store. At $4.99, Jam is all the portable b-ball action you can handle on your iOS device -- with unlockable NBA legends including Dr. J and Dennis Rodman, a campaign mode, and play-by-play by Tom Kitzrow (who did the original NBA Jam voicing). As you can tell from the screenshot, even big head mode is available. Boom shakalaka!
Well that didn't take long: the Verizon iPhone has been jailbroken. After a little hiccup requiring a quick fix, greenpois0n RC5.4 is now capable of jailbreaking your shiny new CDMA iPhone running iOS 4.2.6. Available for both Windows and Mac OS X, greenpois0n from the Chronic Dev Team, allows you to break free from Apple's draconian vice-like grip and embrace the goods and evils of the jailbreak underworld: Cydia.

It's a pretty straightforward affair like most other iPhone jailbreaks, but if you need a helping hand, BlogsDNA has a nice little tutorial you can turn to. Time to unshackle your Verizon iPhone and embrace the warranty-breaking, yet apparently legal, jailbreaking scene.
Verizon iPhone 4 jailbroken with greenpois0n moments after release originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 04:20:00 EST. A slightly complicated 7-step hack will get you an iPad-optimized of Apple's popular video-calling app, albeit without the ability to transmit video (due to the iPad's lack of a camera). The instructions are up on 9to5Mac, and you can follow them at your own risk.

FaceTime apparently runs well on the iPad, though, allowing you to transmit audio and receive audio and video from a friend on the other end. You can see it for yourself below, in a video demo posted by "Intell," the creator of the FaceTime for iPad hack.
Continue reading FaceTime hacked to work on jailbroken iPads

FaceTime hacked to work on jailbroken iPads originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 07 Feb 2011 17:40:00 EST. Apple still hasn't delivered, but a third-party workaround called Wi-FI Sync 2.0 is now in beta. The original Wi-Fi Sync app was released last year, but 2.0 has two important new features: it will auto-detect Macs on your home network, and it offers syncing via 3G. Anyone who purchases WI-Fi Sync 1.1 from the Cydia Store can access the 2.0 beta right now.

Wi-Fi Sync works well, but the initial setup takes some work. First off, you'll need to jailbreak your phone and buy Wi-Fi Sync ($10) from the Cydia Store. Next, you'll need to install the Wi-Fi Sync desktop app (which is Mac-only) and launch it before you launch iTunes. Finally, launch Wi-Fi Sync on your iPhone and enter a code from the desktop app to pair your devices. Voila! Now you're ready to sync over Wi-Fi.

Okay, it might not "just work," but it's a decent enough placeholder until Apple finally builds wireless syncing into iTunes.
iOS Wi-Fi Sync 2.0 beta launches on Mac originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 07 Feb 2011 13:00:00 EST. Though present in the desktop version of the store for a long while, recommendations had been notably absent from the iPhone and iPod touch experience.

To get to the Genius recommendations in the iTunes Store on your mobile device, tap on More once you've launched the iTunes app. You'll then see the new feature alongside the usual options. Genius recommendations work exactly like they do on the desktop. You can view recommendations based on your purchase history for music, movies, and TV shows (assuming your local iTunes Store sells them). You can preview recommendations, as well as rate them by using a 'thumbs up'/'thumbs down' system. Music recommendations can be filtered to show only songs, albums, or a specific genre.

As with the case of the addition of search filters to the iPad's App Store, there's absolutely nothing you need to do to get this new functionality onto your iDevice. The update happens at the back end, which means that the next time you open the iTunes app the Genius recommendations will just magically appear.

Genius recommendations come to the iTunes mobile store originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 07 Feb 2011 11:00:00 EST.
