Acer to launch app store, will pre-load on PCs

Our pals over at Engadget covered the Acer hullabaloo this morning, and there's one bit which blipped on the Download Squad radar. Yes, software aficionados, Acer is launching an app and content store. It'll be called Alive, and you can't really blame Acer for the move -- they're a top-3 manufacturer selling millions of laptops and desktops every year. The opportunity to glean a few percentage...

Opera 11 beta brings "tab stacking," on-demand plug-ins, more

So far with the Opera 11 snapshots, the focus has been on speed, extension support, and some pretty major UI work on the email client. There's been plenty of additional activity behind the scenes, however, and with the arrival of the Opera 11 beta today you can now play with one more feature: tab stacking. What is it? In short, the tech landscape has changed quite a bit!...

You can now browse the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace with Bing's Visual Search tool. According to the announcement, it only works in the US and UK -- but to make it work, after visiting the WP7 Visual Search, I had to change my location (in the top right corner) to "United States - English." Then I had to visit the Visual Search page again. Presumably this will also work if you live elsewhere, too....

Twitter signs Gnip to provide firehose access for $360,000/year

ReadWriteWeb reports that Twitter has just signed an agreement with Gnip, a social data streaming service, to offer half of Twitter's total message traffic for $360,000/year. That is, if you want to analyze Twitter data, you're going to have to pay Gnip for the privilege. With this move, Twitter is effectively outsourcing the "tweet analysis" business. The tweets sold via Gnip are not for display...

Is Google getting ready to drop a Chrome OS bomb on WWDC 2010?

Google was pretty clear about their timetable for Chrome OS when they first opened up the Chromium source code last year. It would be just 12 months, they said, until it was ready to be released. Fast forward to today -- Google I/O recently wrapped up, and Chrome OS was given a little time to shine. We got a quick look at the upcoming Web Store and a few native apps (like Lego Star Wars and...
