How would you change the Palm Pre? (Engadget)

Jul 4th 2009 9:36AM It was my first Smart Phone, prior to this device I carried a dumb phone and a iPod Touch.

My biggest complaints are

1. Build quality. My Pre has the wiggly twisty feeling like an Oreo Cookie from the top to back shell. My wifes RANT fells more solid than this phone. and that should certainly be addressed in future models.

2. Battery life - If I am in constant e(g)mail check mode I get about 5 hrs battery life and that is unacceptable. If I switch to check every 5 minutes then I can get through a day of work.

3. Better Google Calendar integration. This one is almost a deal breaker for me. I plan my work and home life exclusively on gCal and have yet to get my events to show up at all on the Pre.

Microsoft imagines 2019 (Download Squad)

Mar 1st 2009 2:35PM I guess I am not seeing things that amaze me.

Touch screens, remote control touch screens that control bigger screens.

The hospital vision thing was impressive, but I dont see one innovation that truly helps a society create jobs or better living.

Is Rob Corddry The Daily Show's next breakout star? (AOL TV)

Mar 8th 2007 10:50PM Holy bad comedy ... I took somebody on TVsquads recomendation for "Blackballed" and rented it this past weekend. Was a great movie if you enjoy watching paintball and MAD Libs for a script.

Quite possibly the worst attempt at mockumentary I have watched.

Corddry was brilliant on The Daily Show (TDS), but has yet to shine off TDS. I am a huge fan of his, but The Winner just might see the finish line early after the 6 episodes in the CAN... and apparently its a can full of canned laugh tracks.

I am an audio editor in this business of TV and I can grab the CD they used put it on and laugh just as much as I did at that show. I guarantee it IS A LAUGH TRACK!

How Samberg and company put together D**k in a Box (AOL TV)

Dec 21st 2006 8:39PM Funny piece, and yes they have come a long way since Loenly Island, but in their travels they have lost allot of their sense of humor. I attribute that to the censorship and lack of total creative control that comes with network TV.

I secretly had hoped they would be given the riens as head writers when Tina Fey left, but unfortunately it looks like they have more time to go before they get the top spot. Its unfortunate too, because the show still is 70-80% un-laughable and predictable at best. It feels like im watching the same jokes I watched over and over before.

Miserable show... Lonely Island is just about their only watchable material.

See that Johnny Cash video (AOL TV)

Nov 13th 2006 7:07PM I will first preface this with the fact that I am over 30.

I assume Adam couldn't find its worth simply for the fact that it is missing a video edit every 15 frames or lack of sexual eye candy.

I will also admit that this is the 3rd music video i have bothered to watch in the last 10 years. It is as brilliant and simple as the man in black himself. True art in a sea of garbage. Mark this one on your list of videos to win awards at MTV's VMAs.

Super Bowl XL: The Rolling Stones (AOL TV)

Feb 6th 2006 8:07AM My son asked who was playing on the Halftime show this year and I said... a band so old that Mom and Dad dont even like them... But I gave them a chance to impress.

At the very least I expected them to know their music and the lyrics for said songs. Neither seemed to be true.
The mix was terrible, which there is no excuse for... they had plenty of rehearsals and time to get this setup.

At one point I turned to my friends and said... " On the bright side, one of them could actually die of natural causes before they are done ". On the even brighter side, at least we didnt see anything obscene... like Mick doing a helicopter on stage :0

15 people at my house agreed... they sucked ass. Missed the mark for my generation and younger for sure (im 38).
But on the brighter FCC side. At least we didnt see any boobies.

How Bob Iger Saved Network TV (Blog Maverick)

Oct 14th 2005 12:42AM How long till the NBA realizes that they could embrace this same technology and truly reach a global audience with their broadcast product. I work in broadcasting for the Pistons, and can attest for the halftime chat folks from around the world who would gladly pay $5 a game to be able to watch it. Maybe for sports leagues they could sell a package similar to DirectTV's NBA league pass. That way a fan could download a few games and enjoy all their favorite Turk's or Argentinians. My first impression is kinda so-so for the quality of the video itself however. Espescially for Apple and their fantastic Quicktime H.264 HD video in comparison. Another revenue idea with video downloads is the idea of offering "Bug" advertising or a scroll at the bottom. In this way you could offer higher quality video, and offset some of the costs or create more revenue through ad sales. For a much more detailed look into this idea, try this link Piracy is Good? Update: TiVo DRM scare (PVR Wire)

Sep 15th 2005 10:57AM I will give up on TiVo when they stop giving it away for free. (more on how you can get free / cheap TiVo in a moment) I have had TiVo for almost 2 years, and the problem for me with this is not it being reported as false positive, is the fact that they bent over for the MPAA / FCC Flag rules before they have even been mandated. There is no real hope for TiVo to turn back and go away from it now. I also use the cable companies MOXI DVR which is far more capable and used to be cheaper per month. So why keep TiVo? For the TiVo to go option, and photo playback in my home theater. FREE / CHEAP TiVo : When TiVo to go software came out, I had a terrible time with it handling simple channel changes on my digital set top box. I called to cancel and they said well, what if we give you free service till the new software is updated. FINE! When the update finally happened, I had already got the cable co box. So I called to cancel... the phone guy then "Talked to his manager" and reduced my TiVo bill to $4.95 / Mo. Until I find a TV tuner card that gives a nice picture on e-bay, I will stick with this alternative. Karlisimo

iTunes Tip: The "Perfect" equalizer setting (Download Squad)

Sep 6th 2005 3:24PM OK, I am a Audio Recording Engineer ( 17 years in business ) and I would like to take a few minutes of your time to explain what is happening in this "Perfect EQ" First, an equalizer used for playback is designed for 2 things. Primarily it was designed to compensate for the inadequacies of the playback speakers and also the problems with the acoustics of the physical room those speakers are in. Knowing that, an equalizer setup that propperly calibrates your speakers to your room would only need to be changed when either the speakers or room changed, not when the song changes. With that being said... most hardware equalizers are sold to people who like lights and buttons and knobs and enjoy fiddling with music, which adds interactivity. That is the EQ's second function, I call it the WOW factor, whether used propperly to calibrate a room or not, people DO ENJOY INTRACTING with MUSIC via the eq. Now, a professional opinion of the actual EQ setting published above. I notice one glarring problem, all of the frequency faders / sliders are set to boost a given frequency. This, in the long run, is simply turning up the volume. And alot of your positive feedback is a direct result of the positive jump in vloume. The best way to test a EQ curve would be to compensate for this level boost by having a master output gain at the end of the EQ chain, which ITunes does not have. A propper EQ setup will have primarily cuts to correct for problems for 2 reasons. First, our ears are used to hearing frequencies cut ( wether it is caused by our head turning away from a audio source or as simple as a door closing ) even when we have a stocking cap on in the winter, our brains compensate for the loss of high frequencies and the human voice or other audio is still recognized as it should be. Second, when you go into boost mode, you have a bigger likelyhood of introducing distortion. In the digital world, you have a maximum operating level of 0db, once that level is eclipsed, you get a distortion known as clipping. Modern Pop, Rock and Country Music is espescially a problem, since most of the recordings have very little headroom ( decibels remaining before clipping digital zero ). Thus, any boost EQ is going to start clipping almost imediately. Analog EQ sets up a whole new set of distortion problems when in boost mode, but since we are talking ITunes, I will not bother with the details. This same EQ could sound even better if the entire curve moved down the scale to include some boost and cut. Mathematically, you would need to move all sliders - 7db from the original EQ curve. Therefore the new numbers would be -4 , -1 , +2 , 0 , -1 , -2 , 0 , +2 , +4 The only thing I notice is that most cheapy PC speakers need a bit of help with bass. If necessary, try moving the 64Hz fader to zero or +1 or +2. Most PC speakers arent going to do much of anything with 32Hz, so leave it alone. Now, with all of the above known as facts, you can toss most of it away knowing that HUNDREDS of very creative and succesful records have been produced that ignore plenty of what is known about the human ear, distortion and perception of sound. Bottom line - If it sounds good and makes you feel good, it is good ! If it doesent sound good, season to taste. Just one thing to make absolute sure of. Please be aware of listening to loud for too long! You wouldnt want to loose the one thing on your body that provides you with AURAL PLEASURE ! Kyle
