NoE confirms News Channel to be made better, faster (Joystiq Nintendo)

Jan 29th 2007 12:54PM The News Channel is really almost good enough to be the always-on screen saver for my TV (a cheap Dell which I leave on most of the day, because takes a while to boot).

What it's missing for that application:

- looping slideshow. It bails from the slideshow after it's gone through all the news. sort of kills the whole slideshow-as-screensaver thing.
- updates while running. Why stop fetching news just because I'm reading the news?
- a clock. I want a clock on screen at all times.
- photos in the slideshow. if a story has a photo, for crying out loud show it to me.
- simple filters. I don't care about sports news. Let me at least deselect categories.

What I'd like to see in general:

- feed support. That's sort of a tricky one, because feeds are a soup of bad specs. Ask any feed reader developer, and they'll tell you what a mess the RSS specs are.
- direct access to the globe. I have to find a story that has a map, and then I can access the globe? What?

Nintendo trickles out Q1 games list (Joystiq)

Jan 23rd 2007 5:14PM That's funny. This afternoon I got sick of hunting Poes and gave up on Rollergoal, and just went ahead and beat Twilight Princess.

Half an hour ago I opened a text editor and stacked up all the Wii games I want to play this year (including GC titles I missed or haven't finished) against all the 360 games I want to play. Then I marked the ones that were already available, or would be available in Q1.

Wii60 is the end goal for me, but I'm seriously considering selling my Wii now, putting the money into a 360, and repurchasing a Wii in a year or so.

Kiddie porn trumps video games (Joystiq)

Dec 6th 2006 8:08AM Well, that's backhanded as all hell. How are video games and child porn part of the same "spectrum"?

Alternate carrying cases for PSP & DS carts (Joystiq)

Sep 29th 2006 10:02PM Case Logic memory card case:

$4 at Target; soft; doesn't rattle

I like the Altoids gum idea though, and if I end up with a ton of games I'm definintely going for the butter container. That's slick.

Engadget's relaunch giveaways: Xbox 360 Premium pack (Engadget)

Sep 23rd 2006 4:09PM Dead Rising, but I need a copy and an XBox 360 to play it on.

Penny Arcade responds to our "hideous editorial," misses the point [update 1] (Joystiq)

Sep 15th 2006 10:46AM I think everybody understood the original editorial: Microsoft and Sony subsidize their hardware, so if you want the most hardware for the dollar, you buy their hardware over Nintendo's.

Guess what? Nobody gives a damn about "the most hardware for the dollar". You might as well have argued that we should buy consoles based on a price/weight ratio-- it doesn't make any damn sense.

I agree with a lot of others here-- Joystiq seems to be doing its best to jump the shark.

Ten cool OS X screensavers (Download Squad)

Jul 31st 2006 11:01PM That Mr. Sparkle screensaver is all vectory and gorgeous on a large screen. I just now replaced it (after a month or two of use) from my big LCD in favor of IdleWeb (http://www.edot-studios.com/webgroups2/index.php?menu_item=39) running MappedUp (http://mappedup.com) -- shiny plus news (sort of) plus a clock.

SanDisk wants you to say iDon't to iPod (Engadget)

May 22nd 2006 2:27PM What a fantastic way to insult 80-90% of the market. I bought an iPod, so that makes me a chimp? Well hell, I'm convinced, let's go buy some SanDisk crap!

I don't get all the hostility toward people who own iPods. That's the most made-up class of people I've ever heard of-- like hating people who wear jeans. Clearly cargos are the superior pants. Jeans don't even have thigh pockets! ALL PANTS SHOULD HAVE THIGH POCKETS! They just do it to be trendy, you know.

For the record, my iPod's battery has been fine for three years now. It obviously doesn't hold a charge like it used to, but then I also haven't been throwing away dead AAs for three years either. When I finally get around to it, it's going to cost me, what, $20-$30 to replace it? I can't believe I bought such a godawful product, and only because everybody else was buying them!

Higgins vs. InfoCard for authentication (Download Squad)

Feb 27th 2006 10:11AM Finally! I've been looking for some sort of basket I can keep all my eggs in.
