Guild Wars 2 to provide private server functionality? [Updated] (Massively)

Aug 29th 2011 5:55PM @Space Cobra Yes, there will be instances on GW2. PvE "Dungeons" will be instanced for single 5-man parties, possibly raids on end-game; structured PvP (think WoW Battlegrounds) will happen on instances of 5 vs. 5 and 10 vs. 10 groups. World vs World vs. World will happen on massive instances for hundreds of players but apart from the open world. Your personal story will also happen on your personal city instance.

... just like any other MMO where Dungeons and PvP happen on instances. Nothing about this changes the fact that the game has a massive open world where you can play with any other player on the same server. Folks get "tizzy" because folks like to complain, and just mentioning the word "instance" make them cry that the game will be exactly like GW1, where all gameplay was instanced. That couldn't be further from the truth. Instances are used where they make sense, and open world where that makes sense.

Guild Wars 2 to provide private server functionality? [Updated] (Massively)

Aug 29th 2011 5:11PM As others mentioned before, what they mean is that you can create new PvP *instances*, or rooms, where you can define your own PvP ruleset. All instances will still reside on ArenaNet's servers tho.

PAX 2011: Massively's hands-on with the Guild Wars 2 Asura (Massively)

Aug 29th 2011 5:03PM @jondifool I was wondering the exact same. Elementalists can use 3 different weapon types, and from what I've seen on videos the choice of which weapon you use will determine overall the range of the attacks, for main hand daggers having the closest range, and staff the greatest, with scepters in between. Off-hand weapons (dagger and focus) give a wide range of different spells, from extra attacks, to buffs, heals and CC.

I was actually impressed with the range of a Ele in one of the PvP videos from Gamescom, he was throwing some fireballs from a long distance, must farther than what other classes seemed to be able to achieve.

Exclusive Allods Online dev tour: Astral Ships and the end game explained (Massively)

Jan 16th 2010 1:37PM I was thinking the exact same thing. I was quite disappointed when I first read about STO's space combat. The single, most distinctive element between the Star Trek and Star Wars combat is that SW is very person-centric, while ST is team-centric, be it on the ground or space.

Star Wars was always about Luke vs. Darth Vader, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter. On the other hand, the fun in Star Trek is seeing all those different people working together to overcome their foes; the captain gives orders but is not personally handling the ship, they always send parties to ground missions. But for the MMO, Cryptic chose to make each ship a single player affair, probably to make it easier for players to play without others. I think they really missed the point.

Intel shows off glasses-free 3D demo -- now this is more like it (Engadget)

Jan 10th 2010 2:46AM There is one thing I really don't understand: I remember that almost 20 years ago I went to a technology convention here in Brazil with my parents, and I saw a prototype for a glasses-free 3D TV from a major company like Sony or Phillips (to remember exactly which one is too much for my memory), which I recall worked just like that: great experience from specific viewpoints. But still it was something so amazing I never forgot about it.

Now... that was 17 years ago at the very least, since I know I was just a kid when I saw that (I'm 32). I know it was just a prototype back then, but are these people really telling me that the tech for 3D TVs didn't get even a little better after all this time? What happened, these companies forgot they had already developed the tech and started all over?

Liquavista shows off low-power, color e-paper display (Engadget)

Jan 6th 2010 10:45PM @Wwhat It's a LCD-based technology used to create better E-ink displays. It's not an LCD screen like the one you are reading this right now, on a desktop or on smart-phone, which is what I meant.

It should not be compared with current LCD tech, because it's not meant to be used as current LCD tech; it's an evolution of E-paper tech. I'm sure you understand what I mean by that, so let's not discuss semantics.

Liquavista shows off low-power, color e-paper display (Engadget)

Jan 6th 2010 5:59PM Doesn't exactly disappoint? Seems fairly speedy? Guys, reality check, this is E-Paper, not LCD.

This looks awesome. There is pretty much none of that inverted-color mess that takes one second to display the picture, as you see on the Sony E-Reader. Being that a prototype, I'm throughly impressed.
