Manage your DNS settings for faster web browsing (TUAW.com)
May 19th 2010 2:20AM Using a DNS service that's not your ISP's may result in MUCH slower downloads if you are outside the US. Reason being it may screw up Akamai's system of distributed cache servers, which are used for some of the largest downloads you do -- operating system updates, TV shows from iTunes and so on. If you are in Australia, for example, and you use Google DNS or OpenDNS, your closest Akamai cache server will be selected as being in the US. Then, because of the long international latency between you and the US Akamai server, you'll find content will trickle in at a couple of hundred kilobytes per second, whereas if you were using your ISP's DNS and the truly closest Akamai server to you, you could be getting megabytes a second.
Note: this is not a defence of ISPs' DNS servers -- which are often rubbish quality, under-resourced servers -- but just wanted to point out there is a BIG downside to using DNS servers that are not located close to you, as it may stuff up Akamai server selection.
iPad killer apps: The TUAW consensus (TUAW.com)
Apr 26th 2010 8:54AM Teamviewer's only for iPhone, not iPad...? Therefore the resolution would be ridiculously bad on an iPad...
Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition out on iPhone (TUAW.com)
Jul 23rd 2009 8:44PM This is SOOOOO awesome. I purchased it right away. I hope Sierra releases the Kings Quest / Leisure Suit Larry series for iPhone!!
Camouflage - Mac Desktop cleaning that would make Merlin Mann proud (Download Squad)
Jul 30th 2007 7:17AM This is PERFECT!!! Just what I've been looking for. For me, saving files to the desktop is mainly convenient because of the CMD+D desktop shortcut, which lets me very quickly navigate to a place in any save dialogue box where I know I'll be able to find the files again without any difficulty. But icon clutter is a major pain. I've been wishing for a way to have an icon-free desktop with just a finder window showing the contents of the desktop for ages!!
OS X 10.4.10 update causing widespread wifi problems? (TUAW.com)
Jul 24th 2007 8:08AM PS I have a first gen MacBook Pro and am using an Open Networks 625W router which AirTrafficControl reports as being an "AboCom" wireless chipset. (I'm assuming though that "AboCom" routers just use the same wireless chipset as my OpenNetworks one.)
OS X 10.4.10 update causing widespread wifi problems? (TUAW.com)
Jul 24th 2007 8:07AM Yeah, definite problems for me. It just stops sending or receiving data randomly even though it still appears connected to the access point. The fix is easy enough -- turn the airport off and on again, but it's FREAKING annoying, especially if you're in the middle of an IM chat and you're waiting for someone to reply for five minutes, then you realise it's the fricking data flow issue again.
Quinn is not Tetris, is Universal (TUAW.com)
Jul 23rd 2007 12:37AM I wish someone would add the thundering 'boom' effects and cool retro-techno music that was present in Super Twintris II for Amiga. That was the BEST dual-player Tetris game and there's never been anything quite so much fun since.

Dear Adobe: What the hell happened to you? (Download Squad)
May 24th 2007 2:55AM I TOTALLY agree. What is WITH Adobe distributing outdated versions of Acrobat from their website, which you must then download updates for?! How hard can it possibly be to update the downloadable from the web site?
And why the whole system of having to download the downloader? Presumably the idea is it only downloads the bits the computer needs, not the variant DLLs for all the different versions of Windows or whatever, but WTF can't they make a full binary download available for those who need it for offline installation? Drives me nuts.
And don't get me started on how the updates make you REBOOT your computer... it's a FREAKING APPLICATION!

Apr 14th 2007 10:58PM "We don't necessarily want to optimize the software for people that store their e-mail in the same .PST file for ten years."
Phew, lucky we've got Google to come up with mail solutions for the small number of us that don't want to have to slim down our email archives just because Microsoft's too incompetent to engineer a scalable product.
