Apple announces new logo (TUAW.com)

Apr 1st 2006 11:49AM Am I the only one that wishes the internet didn't even exist on April 1? If Apple /did/ do anything on April 1, no one would believe any of the reports. And if we're talking about April Fool's posts, this is probably one of the worst ones I've seen in years.

It's not anything spectacular; it just works.

Script to start iSync, sync devices, then quit (TUAW.com)

Mar 22nd 2006 4:27PM I wrote a script just like this to make sure my devices were always in sync. First, I set the script to check if I have synched in the last three hours. If so, leave it alone; quit. Now, I have a cron job to run the little app every six hours and I use it as a "Returning to computer" phone event for Salling Clicker. It's as close as you can get to continuous synching.

Apple Store NorthPark Center: Your reports (TUAW.com)

Mar 5th 2006 12:21AM sb, someone in front of me in line asked if they had other sizes and the guy said no. My wife and I both got XL.

Mar 5th 2006 12:13AM Justin, it seems that the owner of the pic has to explicitly allow others to add Notes to a photo.

Mar 4th 2006 10:20PM Correction. They're called TuneTies, not TuneWraps.

Apple Store NorthPark Center: Your reports (TUAW.com)

Mar 4th 2006 9:28PM My wife and I arrived at North Park a little after 9:00 for the 10:00 opening. This was the first opening either of us had attended. We managed to get there in time to get T-shirts, but barely within eyeshot of the storefront. About 15 minutes into the drive, I realized I had managed to leave the Canon at home. I remembered to clean off the memory cards and charge all of my batteries, but ran out of the house without it. So, the only pictures we got at the mall were with our mobiles. I took some others when I got home. My Flickr set for the opening is at http://www.flickr.com/photos/jxpx777/sets/72057594074979513/ Word we heard was that the first guy had arrived at 6:45 A.M. before the mall was even open. When we got there at around 9:00 A.M. the mall walkers were out in full force and they were confused beyond belief by the long line of geeks sporting shirts touting Nvidia and Quakecon and brandishing iBooks, some with iSight firmly attached and wielding digital cameras and camcorders to capture the excitement of the event.

The store itself was a little underwhelming for us because our only visit to any Apple store to this point was the Michigan Avenue store when we were in Chicago for Thanksgiving. All the same, the welcome was really nice, although slightly embarrassing. There was probably one employee for every two or three of us that were in the store at the time, and when those of us who were first came in, they clapped and cheered for us.

As far as products are concerned, I wasn't terribly impressed by the MBP. They had a 1.83GHz model on display and it beachballed about 10 times in the short time I bothered to mess with it. I didn't stay in the store long since I didn't have much money to spend. I only came away with one obligatory purchase. I bought a set of Belkin TuneWraps. These are lots better than our previous Smart Wraps because they have holes for stuffing the earbuds into instead of them dangling about like the SmartWraps had done. I might also add that I had to get a coworker to switch shifts with me today in order to go. Just so happens he is a Mac guy, too, so when I showed up for work in my shirt he realized why I needed to switch.

In response to some of the comments above. The Willow Bend store is technically in Plano, not Dallas. So, Knox is the first in Dallas. While I realize how close the Knox Henderson store is to Highland Park, it's a rather different clientele that shops at Highland Park, and the foot traffic is important. One shouldn't underestimate the price point most of those people have for impulse purchases either. Social phenomenon? Absolutely.

I don't care about the rumors (TUAW.com)

Feb 27th 2006 4:29PM My primary motivation for watching the rumors is to get a leg up. Whenever I am fairly certain a new product is coming out, I sell my old one on eBay just before the announcement. This way, I get the maximum for my previous gear to put toward the new one. Sometimes I get burned when my research-based forecast doesn't pan out. Usually, it works out quite well.

Apple's Billion iTunes Counter Clicks to One Billion (TUAW.com)

Feb 23rd 2006 9:34AM I, too, was waiting to buy at around the 5,000-3,000 to go range. My wife and I had albums cued up on all three of our computers. I picked up the remote to turn down the TV and five seconds later when I looked back, the counter on my iTMS Estimator widget had jumped from 999,994,*** to 1,000,012,***. So, didn't even get to click. Prolly for the best, since I didn't exactly have the money to buy music right now anyway. What do you think they'll give away at 1,000,000,000,000?

I know I shouldn't, but (TUAW.com)

Feb 21st 2006 1:06AM Like many people here, I almost never shut my Powerbook Cyprian down. I have tried to do it more often, but it never stays off more than an hour.

If it's a bad habit, I have my system saddled by so many utilities and gizmos that even with 1.25GB RAM, I rarely have more than 100MB free. Lots of background apps such as Growl and Quicksilver, iScrobbler, GrowlClock, GrowliChat, and on and on and on.

I also tend to let my battery run down to reserve really often. Not sure if that's bad either, but it seems irresponsible to me somehow.

Perhaps the worst happens are those that we don't realize are bad.

Oh, and I very rarely (read: never) backup.
