James May explains why supercars are 'pointless' - do you agree? [w/poll] (Autoblog)

Oct 8th 2010 1:21AM @Dan F, that's an Atom to begin w/ and had supercar performance prior to the Prius engine graft. You could probably fit it w/ a Rotax engine and it would still move like butter in a hot pan! I like the Wrightspeed X1, but somehow I don't think that Atom episode would have been as memorable w/o that supercharger pulling Jezza's brains out through his ear canal...

James May explains why supercars are 'pointless' - do you agree? [w/poll] (Autoblog)

Oct 7th 2010 10:38PM My wife owns a Prius, so that means I drive it a lot. It is fun if you take it wide and fast, and the torque is off the meter and I can get 60mpg if I'm shooting for it, but that awful noise you are referring to sounds like a cacophony of mechanical sweetness to my ears. When driving the Prius, I have to either gun the accelerator to get the engine to engage so some pedestrian will get out of the way in the parking lots, or honk the horn. To each his own, I know people that actually crave Durian, and that stuff I wouldn't touch w/ a 10' pole! Pinnacle of Technology, yeah, even if you take only material sciences advancements into play, you have to recognize that our pursuit of perfection has led the cream of the crop to have tighter tolerances, and higher performance than was even undreamable 20 years ago, and it's drivable by someone who shouldn't be behind that any wheel most of the time, not like a WRC Group B car. So, I'd say, yeah, Pinnacle of Technology works for me.

Oct 7th 2010 8:52PM James May has got it all wrong because he is unable to step into another person's shoes w/o thinking of what is touching the surface of his feet w/ complete disgust! Whatever your reason is for owning a supercar, the most common thread is that it the physical representation of the pinnacle of a technology that has set this time we live in apart from everything. Who cares if it is the equivilent of the modern day cod piece in some peoples eyes. To many, and obviously not James May, we would gladly give organs to cry in misery w/ the insurance payments and fuel & tire costs just to be able to say they owned a supercar!!!

Video: Tonium Pacemaker in action (Engadget)

May 8th 2009 1:56PM Awesome! When I first glanced at the initial post a little while ago, I couldn't see how this device could do what it was claiming. I'm sure that this would fall right around the "pro-sumer" area for those of us w/o two plus decks and a whole truck load o' gear. Nice presentation, but now I just want to see how the ui feels under my own digits. It would be nice if they could enable haptics through the touchpad to help the user get more in tune w/ the Pacemaker...
