Go ahead, roast a chicken (Slashfood)

Sep 15th 2005 11:52AM A good roast chicken is heaven. I try to do at least one a week. Done right, it takes only an hour and a half start to finish, and that's only about 10 minutes of prep time. The rest of the time can be spent drinking beer with your cousin at the kitchen table, talking about video games. Plus it is probably the most economical meat. A good, free range (Rocky Jr.) chicken can be had for ~$2.00 a pound. Cheap chickens can be had, but saving $0.50 a pound yields a far inferior chicken. Anyhow, a four pound chicken easily feeds four for dinner with some leftovers. Throw in some roasted veggies and wild rice, and you have a truly epicurean meal for four for under $15. Serve with a good belgian ale. Oh my that sounds good. I think I'm going to roast a chicken tonight.

$50 iBooks cause stampede! (TUAW.com)

Aug 16th 2005 9:50PM TUAW was pumping this for WEEKS before the event. Then to say: "I just hope Henrico County and everyone involved in this fiasco has learned how to handle future sales so that this never happens again. They really did muck this up pretty badly." Yes, you did print the correction statement, but you also did get all frothy at the mouth to begin with. So I would say you were "involved" in some way. What lesson have you learned?

Maximizing your Battery Life (TUAW.com)

Mar 20th 2005 4:42PM Guille: Full cycling Li-Ion batteries actually decreases cycle life. Keeping it routinely above 50% state of charge (SOC) is generally the best policy, unlike NiMH cells. It has to do with how the lithium is shuttled between and into electrodes for the different systems. Unhooking the battery won't help. Having the battery trickle charged is better than having it disconnected. Of course, if the capacity is never used, the intercalation hosts may not give up the lithium. (Contrary to that website, there's actually no bulk lithium in a Li-Ion cell). That's why they say this: "Lithium-ion batteries need to be used for maximum performance. If you don’t use your device often, be sure to complete a charge cycle at least once per month." Frankly, if Apple had better charging algorithms we wouldn't have to worry about it: keep intercalation sites open in the 90%-100% SOC range could be handled automatically. But at ~$100 bucks a battery, why would they?

We know what we gained. But what have we lost? (TUAW.com)

Feb 23rd 2005 12:47PM But they really didn't "lower the price" If you add up the price of the dock, carrying case, firewire cable, they've probably raised the price of the ipod itself. I'd say it was a wash, as one of the benefits of the ipod photo is the A/V dock.

Other MP3 vendors miss the point on the iPod shuffle (TUAW.com)

Jan 14th 2005 11:34AM But that's what I'm talking about. I think the positives outweigh the negatives of the device, but I think that the lack of a screen is a flaw. People are allowed their flaws, as are apples. But refusing to admit that it could possibly maybe be construed as a mistake in terms of trade offs is just silly. Having no screen is one thing when you have 15, 20, maybe 30 songs. When you have 240 songs, well, it's different. Plus: THIS IS WHY MP3's are better than CD's/tapes!! They have information with them. This is a good thing! I see the screen issue becoming the modern analog to the one button mouse debate. eesh. I guess I should give up now.
