So your lack of imagination trumps their right to decide who can and can not read their Tweets? Nice. :-|

Firefox addon blocks Facebook Beacon requests (Download Squad)
Jan 26th 2009 8:00PM That may be true, michas_pi. However if you're so worried about what Facebook might do with your "personal data", why are you on Facebook at all?
Honestly this is not one of the things you should be paranoid about. You should worry a lot more about sites exposing your credit card information, for example. No human at Facebook actually cares what books you buy from Amazon, it's just done to try and better target advertisements. Which ought to be a plus to you since the ads will be less likely to be completely irrelevant...
... and more importantly, if you're so paranoid that you're installing an addon to block Beacon you've surely got the ads blocked anyway.

Jan 26th 2009 5:03PM Or you could just turn Beacon off in your Facebook Privacy Settings.
Settings >> Privacy Settings >> Applications >> Settings >> Don't allow Beacon websites to post stories to my profile.
Yes, it's buried a little deep. But the setting works regardless of browser and regardless of browser updates, no need for an addon! :)
WinZip 12 supports lossless JPG compression (Download Squad)
Sep 11th 2008 1:39PM Isn't zip compression always lossless? Isn't that kind of the point? If you lost data why would anyone ever use it for anything important?
I just selected a random folder full of JPGs to compress with (an old version of) WinRAR and - surprise - the rar file was smaller than the individual JPGs.
That they're getting a 25% compression rate on an already compressed format does seem impressive, but I fail to see what's exciting in general about it being lossless.
Marketing is their job, not yours. And that's what the lossless shtick is about - marketing.
Dear Facebook: thanks for giving me my life back, I think? (Download Squad)
Sep 25th 2007 11:04PM The system didn't make a mistake, it did exactly what it was supposed to do. I'm sure you didn't do it with any malicious intent, but you sent a bunch of unsolicited letters that appeared to be very similar to people you presumably had had no prior contact with.
I'm more impressed that Facebook detected this and put a stop to it than I am disappointed with them for blocking legitimate research. Other sites don't handle spam at all well.

Students sue anti-plagiarism site for copyright infringement (Download Squad)
Mar 31st 2007 8:27PM They address the copyright issues on their site (links on this page: http://turnitin.com/static/company.html ) but it's pretty much a disgrace.
I looked it up to get their spider to stop crawling the pages of my site and, presumably, saving copies, since there's no way in hell I give permission for them to use my content for the benefit of their business. I'd have to mount a legal challenge against them though, so in the end I just blocked them via .htaccess...
Best of luck to the students. I seriously doubt they're going to win because Turnitin's lawyers will just make it seem like the students just want to plagiarise their papers and are not really concerned about the usage of the material they do in fact have every legal right to insist not be used in this fashion.
