Apr 14th 2008 8:17AM Excellent article. I also started outo n SUSE way back in version 5 or 6 (can't remember now!?).

I had not done anything serious on Linux for quite a while & having bought a much larger hardrive for an old desktop I thought I would take a look around and try out a few live distros to see which one I liked, to dual boot.

I played around with severl live distros (Ubuntu/Kubuntu, openSUSE, MEPIS, Fedora, Mandriva and a couple of others) & just for fun gave them +/- points for various things. Time to boot, ease of change of some GUI/desktop elements (icon size, screen size, etc.), responsiveness, ability to find/setup (printers, wifi, network, soundcard), general look & feel.

I settled on openSUSE., partly because of past familiarity but partly because as you, I liked the look & feel of GNOME on openSUSE. Out of all the factors Ubuntu came up second but I had major problems getting Grub to dual-boot. I'm not a newbie on this, having done it since way back when. But since setting up dual-booting is critical to bringing on new users I considered this a major disadvantage. So out went Ubuntu and up went openSUSE.

Runs great, I can find & easily change stuff, and am off & running.

BTW, I was a KDE user too, but it just did not work well for me either in openSUSE or Kubuntu, or any of the other distributions that it's used in. It felt clunky and awkward & I eventually forced myself to GNOME.
