GNOME 3 website now live, tries a bit too hard to be cool, looks like Unity (Download Squad)
Jan 19th 2011 1:44PM Despite the fact that you don't overtly say that GNOME 3.0 is ripping of Unity, the tone of your article and the sentence "does anyone else think that GNOME 3 looks a lot like Canonical's new Unity?" does suggest that you seem to think that GNOME 3.0 is some kind of also-ran that's aping Unity. That might not be what you were going for, but that's sure how it comes across.
At any rate, GNOME 3.0 has been in one stage of development or another since the summer of 2008. Ubuntu planned to stick with it until Mark Shuttleworth, button-switcher, decided that Ubuntu users would be better served by a giant ugly column of puke-colored icons that takes up 20% of their screen and can never be minimized.
I'm seriously skeptical about Unity and GNOME 3.0, but I think it's clear to all but the most diehard Ubuntu fanboys (sorry for this disrespectful term, but I do feel it applies) that GNOME 3.0 has a much better chance of working. Like I said, three years of development versus a a port to the desktop of a netbook interface that was still fatally flawed in October.

XCOM re-imagined by 2K Marin for Xbox 360 and PC (Joystiq)

PC gamers have a real X-Com. It's called X-Com: UFO Defense/X-Com: Enemy Unkown.
I for one am pleased this is an FPS. I don't want one of the best games of all time appropriated by a slovenly horde of 13 year old Xbox games who can't remember the PS2, much less DOS.

Ubuntu live CDs now boot 33% faster! (Download Squad)
Feb 19th 2010 12:30AM Actually, this is a good use of resources. Just about every potential convert is going to sample Ubuntu by way of the LiveCD, so why not make sure they have a good first impression?

OpenOfficeMouse boosts productivity with 18 buttons. Yes, 18. And a joystick. (Download Squad)
Nov 8th 2009 5:29PM Or, Liam, you could stick with OpenOffice (which is excellent) and keep your current mouse all for the price of FREE.
And what's with calling the UI awful, Download Squad? I agree that it's not perfect, but it's as good as anything in Word and a heck of a lot better than Word 2007's ribbons.

Oct 11th 2009 4:32PM I agree. Foxit is rapidly becoming bloated -- PDF-Xchange is the true alternative to PDF reader bloatware! (Has many more features than Foxit also).

Sep 22nd 2009 2:48AM If you're going to pay a 300% markup for an Apple computer, why not a 200% markup for a wireless adapter?
