Proposed class action settlement would let you unlock almost any AT&T handset -- except the iPhone (Engadget)

May 24th 2010 11:31PM @deepdigits The only other carrier where this would be meaningful is T-Mobile, and they already unlock phones for free. Want an unlocked Sprint or Verizon phone? That's great, but it's not going to work with any other carrier. Also, even though T-Mobile and AT&T both use GSM, they operate 3G on different frequencies. So for instance, even if you unlock an iPhone, you won't be able to use 3G data on T-Mobile.

Unlocking won't really be meaningful until all (or even more than one) carrier operate on the same technology and frequency.

Mythos XTR-50 speakers exude aircraft style, remain grounded by price tag (Engadget)

Mar 25th 2010 12:07PM @clarinetJWD Thanks for the follow-up and I don't take it as arrogance at all. The two points I was getting at were 1) There are some technological advances that mitigate some of the problems and 2) I have great experience with the brand.

These speakers aren't for everyone, but if you feel like you need your speakers completely off the floor, these seem like they're worth serious consideration. Again, I haven't heard them first-hand, but I'd imagine they sound quite a bit better than almost any in-wall solution (which is really the market they're competing with).

As for the compromise on sound stage with bi-polar speakers, it's a know issue and frankly one I'm willing to live with, especially since I don't have a dedicated listening room and my speakers pull double-duty (music and video).

Mythos XTR-50 speakers exude aircraft style, remain grounded by price tag (Engadget)

Mar 24th 2010 11:50AM @clarinetJWD They've got a video here:

that explains a bit of the tech involved. They do recommend pairing with a subwoofer to get proper lows, but I imagine they sound great. I've got a pair of Definitive BP6B speakers that I've had for years and love. I compared with a number of other brands in the same price range and Definitive was the clear winner to my ear.

Sep 6th 2009 6:23PM If you read the press release on their site, the panels are 12'x12' and they estimate it would cost 5 billion to cover all the existing asphalt with these. Quite a bit of $, but nowhere near the US GDP of 13.84 Trillion.

Logitech Squeezebox Boom pops up on Dutch site (Engadget)

Aug 6th 2008 11:28AM Yes, it supports Pandora, Last.fm, Rhapsody, Slacker, MP3tunes, Sirius, Live365.com, RadioIO, RadioTime and internet radio audio streams - those are all on SqueezeNetwork (see http://www.squeezenetwork.com/) which is mentioned in the manual.

It also works with a local server running SqueezeCenter, meaning you can run an application on a local machine (PC, Mac, Linux, some NAS devices) and play all your digital music files through it (it supports a wide range of formats, but no DRM).
