PC Inspector, free file recovery (Download Squad)
Dec 13th 2005 4:01PM This software just doesn't work as advertised, period. In data recovery, you do get what you pay for, and free/ cut-rate versions of this class of software never get back your crashed HDD data as promised. GetDataBack from Runtime Software, though, is an inexpensive and powerful solution. And it will get your files back. -C
Symantec kills off Sygate Firewall (Download Squad)
Nov 27th 2005 1:02PM Kerio, Tiny Personal Firewall, and Norton's own NIS firewall all call WRQ's AtGuard their progenitor. To this day, you cannot find a better adblocker, script blocker, cookie blocker, image blocker, or firewall product in one package. It works under Win2k, much less so under WinXP, but is clearly the inspiration (and licensed technology) of the above. Buying a competitor to kill it off is good business, I suppose, but superior tech is not winning here. An open-source alternative built off the AtGuard UI and principles would be ideal. There's nothing it would have to do that would require regular updates, unlike antiviral software that is signature-based. -C

Get Around Corporate Firewalls With HTTP-Tunnel (Download Squad)
Aug 7th 2005 11:58AM websense and other proxy software apps will undoubtedly add this to its list of blocked sites, thus creating an empty promise of accessibility. there *is* a good reason access is firewalled: it's called hacking. -C
