China Unicom offering in-store jailbreaking (TUAW.com)

Aug 30th 2010 4:31PM If you read the comments in the thread, you see many questioning if this is a real China Unicom store or just a handphone seller. I doubt this is a real Unicom store as they are also selling iPads most likely imported from HK. iPad is not officially available in China yet.

Microsoft proves it hates Firefox, we're all upset (Download Squad)

Jul 28th 2006 9:47AM Safari, in debug mode and user agent set to IE 6 displays it fine.
Maybe I'm missing something here, I don't see anything special in the
new homepage.

It's not like the difference btw old and new Yahoo homepage for instance

Microsoft buys iView Multimedia (TUAW.com)

Jun 28th 2006 8:48AM I think when S Ballmer is fully in charge of MS and Gates no longer involved in any decision making no MS (or MS subsidiary) products will be available for Mac. No Office, no MSN Messenger, no games, no nothing.

I always believed that Gates has a soft spot for Apple, maybe because he started out building software on Apple computers. Ballmer will have no sentimental reason to keep MS apps on Mac.

MacBook/MacBook Pro batteries problematic? (TUAW.com)

Jun 1st 2006 12:49AM What is a "fried" battery? U mean the battery gets too hot or died?
If the battery just died, how can Apple not replace it since the MPB
is still under 1 yr warranty?

The alleged conversation that this Jonas guy had with the Apple store
staff makes no sense to me.

And for Sean (the person who supposedly knows his stuff), he might have
done better to ask Jonas this question first no? before jumping around
collecting serial numbers and such?????

Call to take the No Windows Booting Pledge (TUAW.com)

Apr 7th 2006 5:52PM I pledge never to dual boot. I'm going to start a petition to Apple to stop
BootCamp. I think we should burn down Parallel's office and DOS
attack onmac.net ...

Excuse me a sec ....

* Mike, can you hand me that XP disc? No, no, .. not the Tiger disc. The XP one *

Now, where was I?

Open Front Row to third party developers (TUAW.com)

Mar 24th 2006 8:14PM I think it will be really nice to have VLC as the video player for FrontRow.
VLC is much better than QT and supports so many more codecs
without installing plug-ins.

I'm thinking of starting an online donation to get funds from people
who want the same thing. And then award the cash to the first person
to create such a good workable hack. Or can someone start this?
I can be the first contributor with $100.

Apple not interested in the enterprise (TUAW.com)

Mar 20th 2006 8:33PM I work in a company that focus only on enterprise
markets. And I can tell you that sometimes I wish
we should diversify into the consumer space.
Selling into the enterprise incurs huge costs -
industry and technical expertise, pre-sales
and after-sales support, deep account coverage
etc etc.

And enterprises almost always ask you to customize
this and that product for them. They also expect
high-level execs (including the CEO) to meet them
or to speak at their events.

I believe Steve Jobs made a conscious and wise
decision not to focus too much resources and
money on this market. Unless you have a monopoly
technology such as MS or the size of IBM, it is
not a market that can be tackled easily. Hiring a
few more federal sales guys to knock doors on
the East Coast ain't going to make much of
a difference.

Apple has found a good niche in the consumer space.
It so happens that some of Apple's technologies and products can be used by the enterprises as well.
So having a few guys around to handle demands that
come in is a wise and prudent strategy, I think.

In Defense of the Apple Rumor-mongering (TUAW.com)

Mar 1st 2006 7:26AM The other perspective I would like to share is that good, objective
reporting on a company (and the products they put out) also need to take
into account the company's current market strategy and objectives.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I would think this is what Apple will
be focussing on in the immediate and near future:

- get the PPC -> Intel transition done as quickly and flawlessly as possible
- get their own pro Apps Universal
- convince and rally as many software companies as possible to port to
Universal
- recruit more video content and TV networks onto ITMS
- find new incremental streams of revenue (e.g. from the huge iPod
accessories market)

They need to stay focussed on the important tasks, and not get distracted
by the many "demands" from the "Web press" and pseudo-analysts
that they must do this and that and this also.

So far, I think Apple have done a pretty decent job in this regard.

In Defense of the Apple Rumor-mongering (TUAW.com)

Mar 1st 2006 6:39AM OK, maybe the products were not really ground-breaking (Intel
mini and iPod Hi Fi) and could even be considered a joke (leather case)
but these are products which any top end computer or consumer
electronics would just as well be selling as well. If it were Dell or
HP selling these, would we feel as "dissapointed"? I doubt it.

I think the problem is that all these rumor mongering, fake invites etc etc
on the Internet have simply blown up our expectations of Apple way too
high.

I mean they released

- a much improved Mini (some argue that the GPU is weaker but that
really remains to be same. I mean do we know for sure that it's not
better than the one on the G4 Mini)

- a reasonable looking iPod Hi Fi dock. OK, I mean there are similar
products from Bose, Altec Lansing etc etc but why can't Apple make
and sell one too?

I think physchologically, most people were hoping for

- wide screen video iPod with touchscreen navigation
- ITMS to offer HD movies
- Airport AV that can you can stream HD movies to for playback
- TV tuner, recorder etc etc in the new Mini

And where do the mass of the people get this wishlist? I would venture
most of this is really started from all those rumor mongering sites.
After awhile, it becomes a situation of one-upmanship where
each site will try to outdo the other in terms of how spectacular their
"predictions" are.

If you take a step back and look at it objectively, when or where did
Apple ever let on that they are going to release these "anticipated"
products.

I think it's mostly a situation of blindly putting someone on a pedestal
and then throwing stones when he/she does not perform to what
you imagine he/she should.

My input to TUAW is try to cut down reporting or relaying news from
the rumor sites. There are many more worthwhile topics on Apple
that are interesting and more grounded on reality.
