RSS Readers: SOUND OFF! (Download Squad)

Jul 21st 2006 12:27PM FeedDemon seems to be the defacto standard for RSS on Windows. I'm not really a personal fan of how it displays stuff, but I know of no better Windows solution. It syncs with the rest of the NewsGator family, so that's cool.

FeedLounge is, by far, the best web-based reader out there. Go check out their trial and I'm sure you'll see that it's worth the money.

My all-time favorite is NetNewsWire. Why is it that the king of software usability is tied to tightly to the Mac platform? Oh, if only there were a Windows version... NNW is the absolute best anywhere, and it too syncs with the rest of the NewsGator family, so your FeedDemon and online reader experience is identical.

You could also try the NewsGator Inbox product, if you're an Outlook lover. It'll give you a familiar interface and, as expected, sync with the rest of their products.

Since you're already using NewsGator, I'd try out their other products first, just because they'll all stay in sync. Their web-based reader may not be the best out there, but it's really convenient to use it and be exactly where you were when you left off with your superior desktop client at home.

Whatever you end up using, let us know... and tell us why! :)

TaskBlaze productivity tracking application - Today's Free File (Download Squad)

May 23rd 2006 1:09PM Cool. It's kinda like the timer feature Outlook has builtin in that seldom-used Journal.

Now when my boss comes over and asks why I don't have something he's waiting for done, then doesn't believe that I've been busy, I can just print him out the weekly view of my calendar and ask him where exactly he expected me to fit in that project...

Bookmarklet to sort tables by any column - Today's Browser Tip (Download Squad)

Oct 5th 2005 10:01PM That's why you should be using Firefox like the rest of us! There are also several other amazingly cool bookmarklets on that site. It's one hell of a collection of JavaScript trickery and mastery to be sure!

+My Google button (The Jason Calacanis Weblog)

Sep 25th 2005 9:56PM After checking out the HTTP headers being sent back and forth as I added a few feeds, looks like it's a simple GET request to one of their pages... Only problem is, they have a random key (param "et" for those wondering). Looks like you won't be adding a +My Google button unless Google wants you to...

Ask Download Squad: Which apps do you wish were cross-platform? (Download Squad)

Sep 23rd 2005 10:35PM Hey, what about us Linux users? Why's it always gotta be Mac vs. Windows? We have needs too! Number one on my list would be Photoshop... Both Mac and Windows have versions, but the closest thing us Linux users have is Gimp, which, while impressive, doesn't even come close. Number two would be some sort of note-taking application. If you think your Mac can't compare with Evernote, you'd never survive on Linux... I may as well write a C++ version of a stone tablet to chisel my notes on. Come to think of it, that would be kinda cool...

Get Around Corporate Firewalls With HTTP-Tunnel (Download Squad)

Aug 6th 2005 6:11PM Am I missing something, or is this basically just an every-day proxy that runs on port 80? There are thousands of them available on the net ranging from legit fee-based services to unknowing system admins that haven't secured theirs properly. There are even programs such as ProxySwitcher dedicated to downloading public lists of these proxies and switching between them (even automatically every x seconds).

Browser tip of the day: Faster Firefox Builds (Download Squad)

Aug 3rd 2005 9:40PM I certainly haven't done any *real* tests. All I did was install the thing and start it up. It's my considered opinion that it at least APPEARS to load more quickly than the default Firefox. I guarantee you that it is not slower, as these tests indicate. I also do not get any errors. If the author had read the MOOX site, they'd have realized this is likely the wrong build, as suggested already.
